He held back the laugh that wanted to come out when she blurted out that he was a very nice man. Not because Charles wasn't happy to hear such things, he was, but because he was worried she might misunderstand his amusement and think that he was mocking her somehow. The poor thing seemed to have some issues with her self-esteem and worth that needed to be sorted out -things that only growing more comfortable in her life would do, and could only be helped along if Henry was willing to work with her.
Instead he smiled warmly at her. “I try to be.” It was the absolute and utter truth. “That is all anyone can ever do, is try. I have my less than pleasant moments, and I'm not proud of them, but I try to keep them a few and far between as possible.”
Charles took a sip of his wine. “And I think you are a very nice and polite young woman who I think will do quite well you find your footing in your new life.”
