Bartleby could understand the need to clear one’s thoughts. The influence of the opinions of others could be greatly confusing. It seemed to the wolf that it was extremely important to some humans that your thoughts be the same as theirs. He wondered if original thought was at all encouraged among humans. As long as a wolf did not harm the pack, they were free to have their own minds.
“What kind of knowledge do I seek?” That was an interesting question. He wanted to take a moment to gather his thoughts a little better than he before he answered this time. Last time he seemed to have given away his true nature rather quickly. The woman he had met accepted him anyway, but there was no telling how a man would react. The males of the species could be more violent.
“I am seeking knowledge on human nature. I am curious as to why we are like we are and do the things we do.” That was close to the truth without giving too much away, he thought. “Why do men think as they do.”
One specific question he wanted to ask was why men killed for no true reason. Killing for food, Bartleby could understand, but he had not heard of men eating each other. Or wolves that often. And definitely not ogres. But that was not really one to ask unless he wanted to raise more questions.
