Life on the TARDIS was... an adjustment. Fred hadn't notice the extent to which he had developed a routine, back home. Even though the war had forced some changes on everyone, certain things had remained the same: the time at which Fred woke, what he had for breakfast, his morning workout, how he'd start his day in the shop, what time he'd start working on new merchandise, always in lockstep with George. Now... well. He and George had always been different people, but they'd always been compatible, able to follow each others' train of thought with a glance, able to complete each other's unfinished ideas, two peas in a pod, each there to make the other better - to make the other make sense.

Now... George was a dad and Fred was dead.

So.

It was adjustment.

The TARDIS, Fred could tell, was doing its best to make the transition as easy as possible: almost as soon as he'd arrived, the shop had as well -- for what it was worth on a space ship. It was clearly not for anyone's benefit but their own. And yet, somehow, its presence here made the situation that much more uncanny, as though by adding the most obvious similarities between here and home, it magnified all that was different.

He couldn't get over the dad thing. Or the dead thing either, for that matter.

Anyway.

They'd landed somewhere and Fred decided to take the opportunity to stretch his legs and give his brother and nephew (nephew!) some time alone.

The TARDIS, bless it, had thoughtfully provided a tube of something called sun cream. Fred had had to read it to understand what it was meant to do, applied a thick layer to one arm, and gotten bored, tossing the tube towards the bed and casting a sun protection charm on himself in nearly the same movement.

The sun assaulted him the moment he stepped through the doors and onto the sand. This wasn't something they experienced often in England, and it took him a moment or two to adjust, first to the brightness, and then to the heat. He picked a direction and walked. Before long, he decided that he was overdressed and undersunhatted, and resolved to fix both once he got to the water, sparkling in the distance.

When he arrived, Fred found the beach occupied by one single girl, sitting in the surf.

"This seat taken?"

Nina found the TARDIS oddly relaxing. At least she didn't have to worry about food like back home. And here she could...work through her sorrow and grief. Of course she'd always love Matthias. Her first love would definitely stay with her, but she and Matthias were so different.

She found herself sitting on the sand, allowing the surf to break upon her legs. This water looked beautiful and God, she needed to see beauty outdoors. Very few places were like this at home. The sun warmed her soul and for one brief moment Nina forgot about the parem and change in her powers.

At the sound of a voice, she looked upwards. "Not at all. Hey Fred." Nina offered a smile.

"Nina." He returned her smile more genuinely than he would've thought possible ten minutes earlier; she was wearing a whole lot of not-much, seemingly perfectly content to leave most of her skin on display. Not to be a pervert, Fred turned his attention to the ocean, blue and sparkling in a way it never did in England.

Deciding to make himself at least a bit more comfortable, he took off his shirt and set it down on the sand before sitting a few feet away from Nina, short trousers bunched up his thighs. His breath caught when the first wave washed over his legs, resolving itself into a very pleased sigh. This was why people went on holiday: for the hot sun, the soft sand, and the beautiful, soothing ocean.

He leaned back on his hands, freckled chest exposed to the sun, his face tilted up to the sun, eyes squeezed shut. "We don't have these sorts of beaches back home. They're... rockier. And greyer. And colder. ... And less pleasant. All that's missing is a fruity drink with a little umbrella."

The Grisha noticed Fred checking her out, but she didn't particularly mind. The sun felt so good on her skin and she'd never have this opportunity back home. Ever. She wanted to bask in how wonderful this felt.

When he removed his shirt Nina checked him out, which seemed fair considering. Very nice. His breath catching reminded Nina of her response moments earlier. She hadn't quite ventured further because while she could swim, Nina's last foray into an ocean ended rather terribly. What with her and Matthias almost drowning.

"Your beaches sound far less pleasant," Nina commented as she looked over at Fred. "Why does a fruity drink come with an umbrella?" This sounded rather odd to the Grisha.

"You should definitely wear a shirt less often," Nina added, her flirtatious self making an appearance.

An unexpected grin split across his face. Fred knew how he looked, and he hadn't exactly been neglecting the gym since his arrival on the TARDIS, but it wasn't often that someone came out and complimented him on his physique with so little subtlety. It required a level of confidence Fred wasn't used to seeing in women his age -- far less one who wasn't rail thin. This woman had curves on curves, and wasn't afraid to show them off. It was all extremely sexy.

"I'll keep that under advisement," he said, allowing his eyes to run over her a moment. "As for the umbrellas... I don't know. It's something they do in resort places, where people go on holiday. They lie by the pool, take in the sun, and drink colourful boozy fruit drinks with little umbrellas in them. To protect them from the sun?" He shrugged. "To make it more tropical, somehow."

Why be subtle? Nina didn't do subtle, unless necessary to help the Crows. Subtlety belonged to those who were unsure of themselves, and Nina? She possessed enough self-assuredness, rail thin or not. Her curves went on for days and Nina liked how she looked...as well as that unexpected grin.

She grinned when his eyes travelled her body. "Resorts don't exist by me, but I'm sure rich people would still like boozy fruit drinks with umbrellas.

Nina paused. "Do people protect themselves from the sun?"

"Haven't you ever had a sunburn?" Fred asked, incredulous.

Nina didn't think so. Back home she wore more clothing than currently. And it wasn't like she spent a lot of time outdoors lately.

"No? I don't think so? That sounds painful. How do you protect yourself from the sun?" The Grisha didn't want a sunburn, thanks.

Fred blinked. The idea that someone - anyone - had never had a sunburn was entirely alien. Everyone had gone out at least once without their mum catching them and burnt to a sorry crisp. Rather than ask if she'd grown up in a cave (and nowhere was cloudier than home), Fred pulled out his wand and summoned the tube of sun cream he'd left in his room.

"I, personally, use charms." He winced; it only now occurred to him that his room didn't have any windows the tube might fly out of and that it might instead have broken holes in a few of the walls if the TARDIS didn't move them out of the way. "But those who aren't wizards apparently use sun cream. Should be here in a minute."

She wore a lot of layers of clothing back home? "You have a charm for it? That must be useful," she commented with a grin. His magic intrigued her. Grisha possessed powers, but Nina didn't like to talk about hers. I can command zombies sort of brought conversations to a standstill. Not that her heartrender powers weren't dangerous, but people heard of those back home.

Nina watched as a tube of something came whizzing towards them, coming to an abrupt stop. Against Fred's head. The Grisha burst out laughing, and wondered how much further it would have gone, if not for Fred's head.

He only just had time to say, "There's a charm for almost everything" before the tube got him. The thunk was loud on impact, echoing in Fred's head, and he put a hand up to rub his scalp where he was sure he was going to have a mark. That's what he got for not turning around getting ready to catch it. Anyway, it was a small price to pay for the sound of laughter.

He missed laughing.

Would he ever feel like himself again?

Had the man he'd been died the moment he'd arrived?

Fred handed his companion the tube. "Instructions say to lay it on thick every few hours." And then, because the old Fred would be disappointed in him for not getting in there, he smirked and added, "I can help you with those hard to reach places." He'd said it, but it felt hollow.

Nina eventually stopped laughing. Well, that offer sounded about as enthusiastic as Kaz about leaving the TARDIS. On the other hand, she couldn't reach her entire back.

"Sure, thanks." The Grisha's eyes looked at Fred, assessing him. "Sorry about your head, by the way." Although she sure wouldn't apologize for laughing, not when she hadn't been sure she would for a while. Losing Matthias still hurt, even as she moved on with her life.

"That's rude," he said, falsely put-out. "I was born with it!"

He lay down on the hot sand and flicked his wand again, summoning a hat. With any luck, it could borrow the hypothetical holes blown through the walls by the tube of sun cream.

"I take it there's not much sun back home?" He might as well get to know someone besides his brother and Luna.

"Yes. I obviously meant it's not good looking, when anyone with the ability to see can tell you're attractive." Nina rolled her eyes. "And not that a bottle came at full speed and whacked your head."

She thought for a second. "Did...it use a door to get out?"

At the question, Nina shook her head. "Not really and I'm usually covered skin wise." The idea of covering up on this kind of day seemed silly to her, though. "You said there isn't for you either?"

Fred's grin at the continued barrage of compliments felt truer than it had in weeks.

He shrugged, muscles shifting with the movement. "I did it to myself, and I have no idea. If the doors were open, it took the door, but if couldn't have opened it. There might be a hole in a wall or two. We'll find out later."

Turning his head on the sand, Fred allowed himself a proper look at this woman's curves; after all, if she was comfortable enough to comment on his body not once but twice, she should be ready to take it. "That's unfortunate." Though he was sure she was beautiful all covered up as well. "The UK is a cloudy place. We get sun every now and again, and everyone celebrates by spending the day outside, but it's never like this."

He tilted his head back and mentally counted down before shooting a hand up, just in time to catch the sunhat and drop it onto his face.

That grin probably helped Fred get away with murder at times, but Nina tried to not think about it.

The shifting muscles definitely drew Nina's attention to Fred, but then she returned her gaze to the ocean. "You definitely did it to yourself." She couldn't help the laugh which escaped her. "I guess we will." Nina dug into her bag. "Toffee?"

The Grisha didn't mind someone checking her out. Given she had curves for days, well, who wouldn't want to sneak a peak? Besides Kol and Kaz, but that seemed more like only having eyes for their girlfriends, which Nina appreciated. "Women tend to wear more clothes in general. Your home doesn't sound much different than mine."

"And he sticks the landing," a phrase she'd heard in the media room a few times, while trying to learn modern day speech.
