When Joanna started screaming, it was like a piece of his soul was being slowly ripped out. His daughter had been through so much already, and now he was making her suffer more. To heal her. It was almost too much to bear, and he wanted to run from the room. But he stayed, stroking her hair and murmuring softly to her, holding her hand with his free hand.
"It'll be okay, baby girl," he said softly, practically inaudible under the screaming. "Just be brave a little longer. I know it hurts, but you're gonna be all better soon." He hated that he was putting her through this, but he knew anything was better than letting her die again. He didn't even realize he was crying, too focused on Joanna.
When the screams stopped, he gave Joanna a small smile, forced though it was, and got out his tricorder, running it over her. When he was done, he smiled for real and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "It's over, sweetheart," he said. "It's all gone. You don't ever have to hurt like that again, Jo."
He looked up at Gabriel and smiled warmly. "Thank you," he said, voice rough with emotion. "If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask. You've...I can't even...just...thank you."
