Joanna had heard the murmur of a new voice she didn't recognize coming from the other room and had briefly entertained the thought of trying to go out and investigate. Unfortunately she wasn't having one of her better days and the prospect of getting out of bed and walking around wasn't something she was up to doing. So instead she'd worked on slowly wriggling herself further up her pillow so her shoulders and head were propped up some. That offered her a better view of the room, at least. It was better than staring up at the ceiling and waiting for the pain to stop enough that she could go back to sleep while also wondering who the new person was that was visiting.
Although the smile she gave her dad wasn't a fake one, it was a bit more cheery than she currently felt. She was getting pretty good at hiding the pain for short periods at a time. It made her feel a little guilty since her dad was a doctor and said he always wanted to know when she was hurting, but he always looked so sad and worried that sometimes Joanna just wanted to put him at ease and not complaining of her illness was the only way she knew how.
"Okay, Daddy," she answered quietly, a slight strain to her voice from the muffled shrieks she'd made into her pillow the night before. Her eyes - the dark circles underneath prominent - slid to Gabriel and she blinked slightly.
"You're Mister Gray," she said in faint surprise. "I 'member talkin' to you. You're really gonna help me get better?"
