The look Jim wore, not a moment ago, was one of rage and he looked ready to use those skills he'd wielded against Nero on the whole of this place for toying with both Bones and the little girl. But, the moment she'd stepped foot from the room--and Jim had heard the door, having been focusing on sounds from that direction while speaking and listening to Uhura--that look melted away and was replaced with the gentlest, kindest look Jim Kirk had ever work in his adult life. He didn't look at people like this; not his mother, his brother, girls he slept with--none of them. This was a look he never expected to have to use, but one he wore with ease for the benefit of the small child.
Without a word to Uhura, Jim stood and padded over to Joanna and ever so gently, plucked the child off her feet and into his arms. "Not for too long," Jim answered sweetly, honestly. He had no reason to lie.
He gestured over to Uhura. For a moment, he said nothing, debating in his head over how to introduce the woman to the girl and finally settled on what he hoped wouldn't earn him a swift kick to the crotch or a black eye later. "This is Nyota. She's an officer on my starship--a friend of your dad's."
