"If your friends didn't make it all about me," Severus spat back, Remus's raised voice did nothing to assuage Severus's anger and wariness, "maybe I wouldn't jump to that conclusion when I see you."
Severus swallowed, not knowing what to say after that.
Damn Lupin for making him feel bad for what he'd said.
Years of having to look over his shoulder where ever he went, whether he was home for the summer and he had to constantly be aware of his father, or walking the halls of Hogwarts and he needed to be on the look out for the Marauders, or even in his own House - he had a few scars from Housemates that expected conformity to their every whim - had help form his opinion of every situation, and made him mistrustful of what Remus was saying, no matter how heartfelt they sounded. And to be honest, there was a bit of willful disregard, or the desire to continue hating the other boy, that prevented him from accepting the others words. Severus really was unfamiliar with any other kind of emotion, especially towards one of the Marauders; but, he gave the room another once over glance, noting all other doors behind which the other Marauders might have lain in wait for him were still firmly shut, and judging the room to be as safe as Remus claimed, finally lowered his wand.
It wasn't quite an apology, a forced recognition to the facts at hand was more like it - Severus couldn't deny he'd gone several minutes in the other boys presence without being hexed - but Severus wasn't used to bending, and Remus would have to be okay with that.
And Severus was the type to have misgivings about talking to the people here about his living arrangements.
"You know," Severus he tried to control the derision in his voice, though he didn't try very hard, he might have lowered his wand but that didn't mean he was buddy-buddy with Remus, "if you stay over there," Severus gestured towards the end of the flat Remus's room was located, "and leave me over here," and none of the other Marauders decide this was a pleasant place to show up... "things... should be..." Okay? Fine? Splendid? "Workable."
