Jake never much minded weekend shifts, mostly because there was usually a monetary bonus involved, and a day or two off in the middle of the week. He never minded irregular shifts to begin with, and since half his friends worked weekends too, well, it worked out for him. What he minded was working in the damn quarry. Doing demolition in the quarry was just asking for trouble. The first few days had gone okay, and he figured that was probably why people had let their guards slip a little. Not him so much, which he figured was why it wasn't as bad as it could have been. But a pocket of anti-gravity had slid over the area they were working. Things floated, things collided, and legs were broken before he (and a few of the other appropriately quirked people) managed to contain the situation. Of course, calls for the ambulance resulted in security being alerted, and while Jake didn't think there was genuinely much to look into, as the senior crewsman on site while the foreman was occupied, he agreed to tell his version of the situation to whatever poor sap got stuck coming out to talk to them about what was essentially just going to be why yes, the town is a little fucked up thanks for noticing. Still, he made his way out to the road leading into the quarry, a layer of ice melting on his shoulders to counter the heat while he waited for an agent or office or investigator or whoever to show up. |
