STATUS: Closed, complete
The past week had been a blur. Just a couple weeks ago Miles had been in New York, living life as he always had, when the unthinkable happened. He still could barely wrap his mind around it. Suddenly, the only thing to do was get out. Get out, and get as far away as possible. That's how he turned up here, a random town that he was pretty sure he only ended up in by complete accident. However it happened, he was here now, and for some reason he was going to stay. Upon his arrival, he'd found out that the local police force was hiring, and on a whim, before he'd even fully decided to stay, he applied. A few days later he was hired, and the day after that he'd signed a lease on an apartment. This was home now. This morning had been his first real introduction to his new position. He'd spent a few hours filling out new hire paperwork, organizing his office space, generally just getting things ready for him to be a functional member of the team. It'd been years since he'd started a new job. Most of his old team knew all about Miles' checkered past. Now, no one knew, and it was strange but satisfying that his coworkers could look him in the eyes without a hint of pity shining through. After he'd left the office, Miles decided it was as good a time as any to get acquainted with this new town. He'd been driving around for an hour or so, just taking everything in. It was nice, he thought, being able to go about his day without every little thing reminding him of her. His best friend had relentlessly haunted him in New York, memories of her infiltrating everything he did, everywhere he went. Here, there was nothing to remind him of her. Miles was both grateful for the relief and saddened at the prospect that he may finally be losing her forever. Opting to take a break from his thoughtful drive, Miles pulled off the road at the local coffee shop, Starlord's. Hopping out of his black SUV, he stood outside for a moment and looked the place up and down. A big difference from the places he'd typically frequented in New York, but right now, that was a good thing. He walked inside, peering around at all the unfamiliar faces. He somewhat nervously ordered a drip coffee, no cream or sugar, and navigated his way to an empty table in the corner. God, Miles thought to himself. What the hell have I gotten myself into this time? |
