FLASH REACTIONARY

Every Sunday, Axel Mundy cooks extra food and invites a group of ~~six~~ ~~nine~~ ~~eleven~~ ~~thirteen~~ people to his house for dinner at 7. These are very casual affairs and Axel does not consider them dinner parties.

On Sunday, June 05, Axel made a seafood gumbo, with rice and crab. Guests were welcome to come and go as they pleased.

This flash is for any interactions people would like to do at the dinner!

Ellis is very excited (and terrified!) to be there, as he had previously thought these dinners were only for the Best of the Best Most Special Island Dwellers, like it's a secret society that he is not good enough to even be considered for.

He brought some craft beer (Axel seems too classy for regular beer), some wildflowers (Marty's suggestion!), and a fancy 5-piece kitchen knife set that he made with magic for a host gift. It will disappear after dark if Axel doesn't want or need it!

At first, he barely talked to anyone because he was scared of being annoying, but eventually nervously mini fact dumped some odd info about alligator gar, the black squirrels of Toronto, and how he used to be a Scout leader. He's very friendly, just a bit self-conscious about making a nuisance of himself (especially since Lulu does not like him).

"Not in my home province of Ontario, no. Melanistic Eastern gray squirrels have actually become the dominant phenotype where I'm from! They're relatively rare in a lot of other places, though they've been purposefully introduced or reintroduced into other places, such as the National Mall in DC by Teddy Roosevelt himself. It's probably for the best that you don't have them in New Zealand, as they do eat eggs, and so would put your native flightless birds at risk."

	"Oh, no! I was just saying that they live here in Florida. They're considered a living fossil, part of a group of fish that were first recorded back in the Early Cretaceous period, over 100 million years ago. They look a little like sea monsters. Ellis has made himself extremely popular with all the Fun Facts, and it takes awhile for Helly to find a moment alone with him.

"Hey. Watch this," she says, without any preamble. She stares at him for a moment, searching for the most genuinely nice thing she can say. "Your hair is so voluminous."

A yellow rose, stem and all, falls from Helly's lips. She lets it fall to the ground (don't try to grab thorns!), and sighs. Not a diamond.

"Ooooh wow, that's so cool!" Ellis says, genuinely impressed. "Also thank you, that's so nice of you to say. Your hair is amazing. So shiny! What conditioner do you use?" He picks up the rose, careful to avoid the thorns, and offers it to her, just in case she wants it back.

"Hey, do you want a sword?" he asks, wanting to return the favour of showing off a trick. "I mean, it's no diamond or flower, but."

	Tui was at Home Depot all day and didn't see the invite until the last minute. He brought cold beer from his fridge and gave a good natured laugh when he saw the others brought beer as well. Callie is INCREDIBLY excited that she was invited and it was the talk of Pond House as soon as Axel made his post. Many, many dramatic exclamations, conversations with Marty, and wardrobe changes later, she arrived at Axel’s house with a bundle of books and a bouquet of flowers.

She walked up the steps. Raised a hand to knock. And then…

Pivoted away to find a quiet spot to flail for a moment, letting out a breathless squeal and clutching the books to her chest like they were the lone anchor keeping her feet on the ground.

AND THEN. She took a deep breath. Walked up the steps. Raised a hand to knock. And then -

Knocked and waited for fate to meet her on the other side.

Once she was inside, Callie was in an even better mood than usual, practically GLOWING with cheer. She was happy to talk to anyone and she offered to help out with anything she could.

Throughout the night, anyone is welcome to notice that she glanced at a little (enchanted) hand mirror periodically, her expression by turns fond and exasperated, until she slipped it into her purse and left it there.

	Within a heartbeat her heart broke. She watched Axel helplessly and took a few long strides to catch up. "I'm sorry," her whisper was frantic, but quiet. Helly does not yet understand the significance of the dinner invitation, but gets the feeling that Axel doesn't want to make a big deal about it, which is cool with her. It does make her a bit self-conscious that everyone else brought him gifts and she didn't, though. Producing a gift on the spot is easy, except everyone here knows that her jewels and flowers were free, so maybe they'll just think she's cheap and a bad guest?

This internal dilemma means that Helly is rather quiet, at least until she figures out the vibe of everyone here.

As a house guest, Lulu has approximately no manners whatsoever, and wanders wherever she pleases with little regard for people's privacy. After disappearing into the mud room for a moment, she returns to the group, her arms full of three piglets (as many as she could carry unassisted). Her eyes are brimming with tears which look at risk of spilling over.

"Are we going to eat these pigs?" she asks, sounding completely resigned to this fate even if her soul is crushed by it.
