rating T for Teenagers

Darla was scared of many things, but, surprisingly, not teenagers. She was used to them. Sometimes she had the feeling she'd stopped maturing in her teens and had been faking it ever since, so that probably helped. Plus, back in Seattle, she'd been working in a branch of the library right near a public school, so she had to do a lot of telling off of rowdy kids, and it had given her a sort of... Status. They'd even asked her for help with things afterwards. She did have the uncomfortable feeling that they made fun of her stutter behind her back, though. But kids would be kids, and she couldn't stop them, so she didn't dwell on that.

She'd made new cupcakes for the teenagers, and was having a really, really hard time not taking one. She really had to be careful about what she ate. When she was younger, she could suck down food like a vacuum cleaner and not gain a pound, but some point, her metabolism screeched to a halt (no thanks to old age), and now she had to weigh the pros and cons of everything she ate. To distract herself from the thought of food, she turned to the main table, and picked up the recyclable shopping bag she was using for the books, going through it to make sure she had everything.

Teen fiction was a little beyond her. She did her best to keep up with the latest and most popular works, but she'd been reading adult novels long before her teens and had never understood the appeal of things written specifically for young adults. But this was a club for teenagers, and thus, teen fiction they had to have. She'd pulled a copy of every book on the list, and a few more, but she couldn't help think that there was going to be a distinct lack of quality in all of them. People wrote for teenagers like they were stupid.
