| You feel hands on your back pushing you forward. The momentum causes you to stumble through the threshold, and you are unable to catch yourself until a few steps in. The heavy gate slams shut behind you. You turn around to look, to see if any of the others have made it through, but you are the only one there. "So, you're the one." The feminine voice is pleasant, soothing, but it carries an authoritative note to it. As you turn toward it, you see a woman dressed in fatigues, dark hair pulled into a loose bun. She reaches out to brush something off your shoulder. "Don't worry. Darrell and the others are old pros. They'll take care of it." Clapping a hand on your back, she gently pushes you forward to walk alongside her. "Where am I?" you blurt out. "It's not so much a question of where, but when." She takes a moment to consider. "Well, I suppose, it could be a question of where, depending on where you came from." Where, you learn, is Novus, a settlement that started at least eight years ago. Since then, it has grown rapidly into its own, large enough to have several territories within it and a government structure.
