Six degrees of separation (also referred to as the "Human Web") refers to the idea that everyone is on average approximately six steps away from any other person on Earth, so that a chain of, "a friend of a friend" statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps or fewer.

In January 2006, Wizarding Great Britain is finally ready to move on from the events of May 1998. Hogwarts reconstruction has been completed, old shops have been restored and reopened and new shops have popped up in Wizarding towns. The community and commerce is thriving once more.

However, old prejudices die hard. School rivalries still ring true, Pureblood Supremecists still hold their views with utmost importance and Muggleborn Rights Activists still fight for complete equality. Not everyone gets along and this is no perfect world. Where will you fit in? Will you be the Boy Hero having drinks at a local pub with the Slytherin Prince? Will you be the Bubbling Badger secretly pining after the Raven Seeker? Will you be the Brawny Sidekick struggling to shed pretense in order to strike up a friendship with the Bookish Brunette?

Where are you? No one knows. How did you get here? Not a clue. What you do know is that you fainted and woke up alone in the desert. You start to wander and are found by armed soldiers and are brought back to their base. An old man with a pale complexion and very long finger nails asks you questions, recording everything into a ledger. He nods and gives you a key, a smart phone and a netbook and sends you on your way.

You are in Phoenix, Arizona where the locals tell you to sleep with one eye open. Now that He has you, strange things will happen. You might forget important dates or things you've done and then suddenly remember them days later. One day your abilities may work and the next they may not. They also may be completely switched with someone else. You never know what He's going to do or who he might bring in to torment you. The only thing you can count on here is that you'll never know who He is.

Welcome to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.

Originally created to handle the supernatural and unreal, this United States government agency has been reconstituted for a slightly different reason: to handle the sudden influx of people from other worlds. The existence of other dimensions has always been accepted in the BPRD, but no one was exactly prepared for how many oddities have been showing up, needing food, shelter, and hopefully a way home.

This being a bureaucracy, you can't get something for nothing. The United States government is willing to offer a temporary living arrangement to these newcomers if they can get what they sorely need out of them: workers. The BPRD is understaffed and in need of researchers and field agents to do the dirty work that comes with fighting demonic forces. This is the only option for these cross-dimensional travelers, who know that they have to trust in the goodness and rightness of democracy to find them a path back to their own worlds.
