Belle didn't have to cry to make Coop feel bad. He could imagine how he would have felt had Belle been the one out in the woods at night...and he remembered how he had felt when they'd been attacked. He was a big enough man to own up to being a childish idiot.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Bennett," he told her softly. "For not thinking of the spot I was putting you in. I promise you that I'm done making you worry." It required him to lean forward some, but he lifted her hand to his lips. He was done playing in the woods at night and disappearing without a trace for hours at a time. There was plenty he could find to do in the Village and around Belle - he never even thought to defend his actions.
