He noted the word "friend" being used and approved. It was true; this was the closest he had felt to someone not in his immediate family in a long time. Sure, he'd had mates at university, but college friends had a way of drifting off after you were no longer forced to spend all semester in a room together. He was used to being a loner, after all.
