The comment almost made Penny spit out her drink. She covered her mouth and swallowed hard enough to get the liquid down over the laugh she was holding in, shaking her head vigorously. "Couldn't tell ya, man."
She put the empty glass down on the table, her other hand absent-mindedly tapping out the rhythm on one of her thigh. "Yeah. That's what I meant when the store was my first job. I was in the woods, and then I was on the road. So I played gigs where I could, sold odds and ends." Shoulders lifted in one of her shrugs, smiling to herself a bit. She wasn't sure she had ever been aware someone she knew was in the audience before she played. But that was something friends did, right?
"I might try to get in on this next week. It's hard to land anything that pays when you're new, ya know?" As she spoke, a fingertip found the side of her glass, tracing patterns into the condensation that formed on its side. She couldn't help but giggle again.
"I doubt you're that bad. Now you're going to have to sing for me someday."
