It had been a long time since Penny regularly spent time with the same person. Actually, it had been a long time since Penny regularly spent time with people. Living in a truck, rolling through town after town and state after state did have it’s Kerouac-esque moments; but it was also just a lot of time by yourself in a truck. Perhaps it was less her social awkwardness and more her failure to stick around much of anywhere that was the root cause of her lack of… friends.
Enough time went by, and it was easy to convince yourself that you actually didn’t want to be around people. Making the choice to stay in Innovo had slowly been turning that. Sure, she had had a few unpleasant first meetings, but if she had to work with someone she was glad it was Reese. She had been sitting on the floor behind the counter with a piece of charcoal and her sketch pad in her lap when Reese took note of the fact she was still around. She hadn’t fully comprehended that they were actually closed, time had gone quickly.
She laughed a bit, lifting her face to smile at him. Fingers pushed a hair out of her face as she spoke, leaving a black smudge on her forehead “I guess I just don’t really have any place worth rushing off to.” She shrugged. “Am I cramping your alone time?”
