On grudges
I’ve seen Japanese fans on 2chan, perhaps in support of the heroes, claim the Dark Signers’ grudges are all misplaced or unjustified. YGO has a history of characters with misplaced grudges, such as Mariku. But just because it’s happened before doesn’t mean it always happens that way.
First, Kiryuu. It’s easy to see why this looks unjustified. The flashback implied he killed a security officer, and if he did, and if it wasn’t in self-defense, then he really has no one but himself to blame. But the flashback was very fragmentary and poorly lit, and it’s not at all clear exactly what happened. So it’s not quite certain his grudge is unjustified.
Next, Misty. Her brother went to see Aki duel, and we know for a fact Aki’s duels do real damage. But we have even less information here than we did with Kiryuu; her brother could have been mugged, for all we know. So Misty is jumping to conclusions to think Aki did it, but it’s equally jumping to conclusions to say she didn’t.
Finally, Carly. This is the one I understand least. We saw Divine kill her, how can anyone say her grudge is misplaced? From what I can figure, they argue Carly brought it on herself by snooping.
I’m in the U.S., and as I understand it we have more situations where it’s okay to kill someone than they do in Japan, and even so this still isn’t one of them. You can kill in self-defense or in defense of your home. But trespassing in an office building doesn’t deserve death.
I’ve been reminded that character-bashing is a petty thing to do, and I realize I’ve been bashing Aki a lot. I’m going to try to cut down on that. I don’t mean I’ll try to be fair and impartial; I’ll still cheer for the characters I like, because I think enthusiasm is good. But I’ll try to be more positive than negative, and if I do have a negative opinion, I’ll try to back it up with something.
And I do have a negative opinion of Divine. Carly was a criminal for trespassing, but he’s a much worse criminal for killing her, and for what he did to Lua’s party. A show needs good villains, so he’ll probably be back. But if he then has a grudge against Carly, I would argue it’s his grudge that’s misplaced. I consider him one of those villains you don’t need to feel guilty about hating, instead of the reformable ‘tragic misunderstanding’ type.
