Why couldn't he have left it at that? Why couldn't he have just walked away, giving her the opportunity to run past and pretend he didn't exist? Faye forced a laugh - an extremely nervous one, at that - and shrugged.
He seemed concerned, according to that small part of her brain which retained logic. The rest of her mind, however, suggested that he was tricking her. She couldn't think of a reason, but she also couldn't think of a reason for him not to have ulterior motives of some sort. It made no sense, and that was why the fear annoyed her so much. If only it were logical...
