He couldn't say that he had ever really looked into Muggle books on gardening before. For one thing, gardening was not his forte by any stretch of the imagination, and for another, he tended to restrict his reading of Muggle books to fiction or scientific journals. So this was new, all around.
Severus browsed the shelves, fingertips brushing over the spines, as he read the titles of several successive books in turn. All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space! ... The Vegetable Gardener's Bible (10th Anniversary Edition) ... Home vegetable gardening; a complete and practical guide to the planting and care of all vegetables, fruits and berries worth growing for home use ... and so on, and so forth.
He found himself wishing, yet again, that Miss Prescott were still here, but that was a fanciful dream, to say the least. Because that would have made tending to the Mandrakes far too easy, wouldn't it? But they could do this. He was determined to see it through, even if gardening wasn't his forte. Because he had a feeling that the Mandrakes would become important at some point, or they wouldn't have been there.
His eyes froze at one title in particular that stuck out like a sore thumb: Gardening All-in-One for Dummies. As much as he hated the idea of being a 'dummy' in general, when it came to gardening, he was one. So, with a sigh, Severus pulled the garish yellow book off the shelf, and made his way to one of the armchairs to start reading. Perhaps there was more to it than merely talking to plants, which -- to be honest -- had always made him feel a bit foolish. He would see, he supposed, and he flipped open the book, to begin reading.
