RP: Decorating her Space
Characters: Mercy, Sev
Time/Date: late afternoon, October 26
Location: suite
Warnings/Rating: Mercy's singing?
Summary: Mercy sings. And decorates.
Status: complete

She'd found a Halloween song station on the computer, and while most of them were only vaguely Halloween-related, there were classics in there that even she recognized. She wasn't sure if Sev was in his room or out of it -- she'd been in and out all day and honestly hadn't gone in to check -- but the door to the suite was open and she was prepared to entertain anyone who wandered by. Maybe one of the kids would want to help, or something like that. She wasn't opposed to making new friends or finding new company.

Balanced precariously on one of the chairs, Mercy stretched to attempt to affix a point of the sparkly purple tinsel garland to the wall with the loop of black ribbon (discretely taped, of course). She grunted as she finally stuck it, and grinned as she dropped down from the chair. Dragging the piece of furniture further down, she climbed back atop it once more to repeat the process. All the while, she was humming along to the songs as they played on the computer.

After she finished garlanding the common area, she was going to tackle the wall-stickies and the hanging skeletons.

Sure, they'd only be up for a week or so, but it wasn't like she had anything else pressing to do just then.

When Severus approached the outer door to the suite, he almost had the urge to go for his wand. The door was hanging open, and that put his fight or flight instinct into overdrive. He would never leave the door open like that, which said quite clearly that something was wrong. As he drew a little closer, however, he heard music.

Which wasn't all that much better. Granted, it meant no one had forced entry, but it did mean that Mercy was in there. When he was sweaty and covered in dirt. Wonderful.

He'd imagined she would have been out, because she was almost always out. He hadn't really hadn't expected to come back and find her ... doing whatever she was doing in there. Briefly he thought about pulling his wand anyway, to cast a quick Scourgify. But then again, he'd already managed to successfully put her off him, so what did a little dirt matter? He doubted being filthy would make her think any less of him.

Squaring his shoulders, Severus continued toward the door. He would just ... go straight to his bedroom, followed by the bathroom. If she was preoccupied enough with whatever she was doing, perhaps she wouldn't notice him. So, taking a deep breath, he stepped inside, intending to do just that.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, depending on one's take on the situation), she did happen to notice him coming in. She glanced at him, taking in the dirty hands and dirt streaks on his face, and she had to grin a little. "Making mudpies?" she guessed before she shook her head. "No, too clean for that."

Shifting her stance, she hopped down from the chair, draping the trailing end of the garland over the back of it. "Definitely something to do with the mud though," she reflected before she splayed her hands out to the side.

"All right. I give up. What'd I miss out on?"

Severus exhaled, shoulders slumping, when Mercy stopped singing as he walked in. So she'd noticed him, and he braced himself for laughter, but the most she did was grin. Not quite so bad as he'd anticipated, of course, but he still rather wished she hadn't noticed him at all.

"No, you had it right the first time," he answered, turning to face her, and he even managed a small smirk. "I was making mudpies, but I am always exceptionally neat about it." Then he shook his head. "Actually, Lily and her friend Jaime found some Mandrakes in the jungle, and we potted them to get them off the path."

"You know, I'd actually believe that," Mercy admitted. "If anyone on this earth would be neat about mudpies, it'd be you." She nodded slightly. "Not me though. I'd make them down by the pond and come back covered in mud." She nodded. "Unless I had a flash of brilliance and hopped into the pond before heading back. Either way I got lectured for something." She grinned slightly.

"Mandrakes like ..." Dammit. She'd heard that before somewhere, hadn't she? The things pigs hunted? But no, those were truffles, she was pretty sure. "What are those, exactly? I'm for some reason thinking truffles, but I know that's not right."

She gestured around behind herself. "I'm decorating," she informed him, because stating the obvious was apparently something she felt compelled to do just then. "Then I'm going costume hunting," she continued, since that part wasn't obvious.

Severus actually chuckled when Mercy said that she would have believed it. He had never made a mudpie in his life, but if he had, he would have been as neat about it as possible. He smiled at her story about her own mudpie making, and again when she mentioned truffles, but ... well, he wasn't supposed to be thinking she was cute any more. He was leaving her alone now, wasn't he? And thinking she was cute was decidedly unhelpful in that endeavor.

"Mandrakes are an anthropomorphic root of the nightshade family," he answered, with a slight shake of his head. "They are valuable in potion-making because of their powerful restorative properties, but they are also quite dangerous. When they are mature, their cry can kill, and even now, they can knock a person out." He paused with a slight shrug. "Hence, the potting. We didn't want anyone to stumble across them."

He followed the gesture with his gaze. "Is that what you call it?" he asked, smirking again, when she pointed out -- quite unnecessarily -- that she had been decorating. "Ah," he replied, when she mentioned costume hunting, and then -- in case she was curious, though he had no idea why she would be, and this was probably more than obvious, as well -- "I'm going to have a shower," he added with a nod, before starting in the direction of his bedroom once more.

"That was very considerate of you," she said. Which is was. She wouldn't want to be strolling through the jungle and die of Mandrake cries. The fact that a plant could make noise and kill her was kind of disturbing, though she supposed if she was a witch and if she lived in the world they were in, she would be prepared to handle them. Or something. She blinked at the tangent her mind had spun off on, and she shook her head slightly.

"How'd you ..." she trailed off, then worked it out for herself with a gesture to her own ears. "Earplugs?" She nodded. "Earplugs." She decided.

She grinned and stuck out her tongue. "Listen, Mister. If you don't like it, you can decorate your own half however you want to."

A nod followed his comment about a shower. "Sound plan," she agreed. "Want me to bring back one of the pizzas and we can split that for dinner? Unless you were ..." She gestured. "Had plans. Or don't want pizza. Or were too hungry to wait for a couple of hours."

"It's that overprotective thing again," Severus answered with a slight shrug. "I believe I've mentioned it before?" He frowned, watching her carefully for a moment, as she appeared to be working something out and then nodded when she mentioned earplugs. "Lily put a Silencing Charm on them before then, and I put one on the area whilst we replanted them, but yes -- we used earplugs."

He shook his head at her stuck-out tongue, but he smiled nonetheless. "Actually, I think I'll leave the decorating -- such as it is -- to you." Halloween was only a few days away, after all, and if she was having fun with it, far be it from him to stop her.

When she mentioned bringing back a pizza, he stopped en route to the bedroom and turned back to face her again. If he had plans. Now that was a laugh. He never had plans, apart from reading. Well, except for the few plans he'd made to spend time with her, but that was over now, wasn't it? Or was it? "I'd like that," he said finally, with a nod and a small smile. Just because he was leaving her alone didn't mean they couldn't share a pizza every now and again, did it?

"Envy," she said with a sigh. If there'd been witches and wizards in her world, she'd still be envious of their magic. "Well, that was nice of her, too, then," Mercy decided with a little smile. She nearly asked which Lily, but she worked that out on her own, too. Not that she didn't think the other Lily couldn't, but the one more likely to be doing things like that was in-charge Lily.

She grinned. "All right, but when you find black cat stickers plastered all over your door, just remember that you left the decorating in my hands," she warned him playfully.

"Excellent. Any preference on toppings or should I just snag what I find? To the best of my knowledge, they only have pepperoni and sausage, but I didn't really look that hard," she admitted before she dragged her chair over to continue with the decorating. She at least wanted to have a good start on it before she left to shop and get dinner. "And drinks? We have a couple of Cokes in the fridge up here, but I can get something else."

Severus repressed the considerable urge to say it had been his idea, originally. That was just splitting hairs, really, especially since Mercy had already said it had been considerate of him. Besides, Lily was nice. There was no denying that. He didn't need to detract from that.

"I'd rather have bats, actually, if it's all the same to you," he answered, raising an eyebrow. But then he smiled again.

"No preference," he added with a shake of his head. "At least between those two," he clarified a second later. "And I'll ... make myself a pot of tea," he added with a shrug. He continued on toward the bedroom again, reasoning that if she needed him for anything else, she'd let him know. Otherwise, he had a fair amount of dirt to wash off.

"I will see what I can do about that, then," she replied. "Maybe I'll find some bat stickers while hunting down a costume." It would probably be easier to track down a costume if she had the faintest idea what she wanted to dress up as. If she wanted to -- God forbid -- go girly, or if she wanted to go scary. Maybe she'd go as a vampire and pretend to bite people.

Or she'd not bother at all since it was probably mostly going to be kids. Or she could dress up as a grandma and wave her cane at people.

"All right," she agreed. "Enjoy your shower. If I'm not back in an hour or so, then I've been sucked into the black hole that is the mall and probably ... am doomed." She grinned and climbed back onto the chair. She'd finish this row of garland and then see what sort of trouble she could get into in the outside part of their cage.

"Well, if you can't find any, I suppose I can endure cats, so long as they're black," Severus answered with a chuckle.

Of course, if she intended to hunt up a costume, that meant she was going to the ... gathering on Saturday in the lobby. And he shook his head when he realized he was wondering if she would ask him to accompany her. Fancy dress parties weren't really his thing. Nor would parties in general, to be honest. He wouldn't have even attended the Hogwarts Halloween feasts if it hadn't been required. Besides, he'd needed to eat.

When Mercy said she might be sucked into the black hole of the mall and face her doom, he stopped just inside his bedroom door, sniggering. Then he poked his head back out. "If that's the case, should I come looking for you, or just ... abandon you to your fate?"

"Of course," she agreed.

She looked thoughtful before she shook her head slowly. "Your call," she decided. "I mean, you'd get a suite to yourself, but I'm sure you'd miss the Sing Along with Mercy hour," she continued, brows lifting. "You would miss it, wouldn't you? I mean, the caterwauling is just so soothing ..."

She grinned and shrugged, but it wasn't like it wasn't painfully obvious she didn't have the best singing voice. Pity she liked to do it so much.

"Nah. I should be fine. I have to retrieve the food, right? Surely that'll be enough to incite my return."

"Of course," Severus agreed. "It's the most soothing caterwauling that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing."

He shook his head at himself a second later. There he was -- standing there, filthy from head to toe -- and he still was having trouble tearing himself away from talking to her long enough to have a shower. He could scarcely believe it. Apparently when he stopped over thinking things and worrying about whether she wanted to spend time with him, he could relax and just enjoy spending time with her. And what was more, she seemed to be enjoying it, as well. Wonders never ceased.

"All right," he finally answered with a nod. "I'll come and look for you when I start to get hungry, then, and not a second before."

It wasn't much more than an hour or so later that she returned, bearing more bags than she'd intended to pick up -- but wasn't that always the way? One thing led to another, and so on and so forth. She had snagged a box of Halloween brownies as well as the ingredients to make them, Halloween-themed cookie cutters (and a roll of sugar cookie dough), frosting, and sprinkles.

As well as a police officer costume because it had been there in her size and kind of cracked her up. It even had a fake mustache, which she was totally going to wear, because that was funny to her. Even if all she did was wear it around the halls and briefly wander through the lobby during the party, it'd be fun for her.

She did not forget the pizza, either. Go, her. She'd gone with the pepperoni, and as she roamed back into the suite, she looked around to see if Sev was out in the suite-part or in his room. Not that it mattered; she had to cook the frozen thing anyway.

"I'm home!" she called out if he wasn't visible in the immediate area. If he was, obviously, she reasoned he saw her and felt no need to call out.

Carrying her things to the kitchenette, she dropped off the food-stuff there before carting her other belongings to her bedroom, dropping the bags inside the door before retreating outside.

When he heard Mercy calling out, Severus marked his place in his book and set it aside. He made the common area just in time to see her entering her bedroom, but she came back out again shortly.

"Anything I can do to help?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.

Not that he expected to be of any use at all when it came to the pizza, but he could put things away and make his own tea. And, of course, do the washing up. He was very good with doing the washing up.

She glanced over to Severus when he came out, grinning a little. "Thought you were hiding in there," she said with a little nod as if she'd known it all along. Well, she had assumed as much. "You were getting ready to call out the cavalry though, right?"

Shaking her head, she looked around and shook her head. "Think once the pizza's in the oven it sort of minds itself," and the Cokes were in the fridge, and ... well, that was about it.

"Could find something decent on TV? A comedy, if you can find one amidst all the Halloween horror they're showing?" She paused. "Or whatever you want to watch that isn't ... history." She arched her brows on the last word before she grinned.

"So cookies or brownies later? I got both. But you have to frost and sprinkle the cookies." She held up both as she started toward the minifridge to put the cookie dough in there, turning on the oven on her way to get it preheating.

"As soon as I finished the chapter," Severus answered with a solemn expression and a nod before he smiled. He nodded again, filling the kettle with water for his tea, before Mercy suggested finding something on telly. "I think I can manage that," he said. "Though -- hypothetically speaking -- if I were to find something that claims to be a historical comedy, should I bother to mention it?" He imagined the answer would be no, but he still could think of a couple of Monty Python films, at least, that would qualify.

"Ah, cookies, I think, as long as they aren't chocolate," he said over his shoulder, making his way to the telly. "After the Dementors, I've had quite enough of chocolate for a while." Perhaps his taste for brownies would return in time, but right now, he really couldn't stomach the idea. He sat on the sofa, grabbing the remote, and then switched on the telly, switching to the guide. And he scrolled through for a while before he found anything at all that said it was a comedy. He switched off the telly again as he heard the kettle whistle.

"We have our choice of two comedies," he said, rejoining Mercy in the kitchen. "Something called 'Heathers' and 'Scary Movie'," he added, pulling the kettle off the burner and turning off the heat. "Do either of those sound appealing?"

"Oh, wow. I didn't even rate a chapter interruption. Ouch," she teased him before she shrugged. "You can mention it," she said. "No promises though."

Mercy shook her head. "Sugar cookies. You can have them plain, with frosting, with sprinkles, or with frosting and sprinkles," she informed him with a grin.

"Either or," she said. "I've seen them both and liked them both." She unwrapped the plastic around the pizza and slid it into the oven before she turned to look around to try to recall where she'd put the plates.

"You'll probably hate both of them the same," she added with a cheeky grin before she ducked down to pull the plates out of the cabinet, setting out two on the counter..

"Well, it was an engrossing chapter," Severus added with a slight shrug. "Besides, I wasn't hungry yet." But that wasn't the case now, and his stomach gave a happy gurgle at the idea of cookies for pudding. "I may have to try all three, to see which I like best."

He piled tea bags into the pot as Mercy said she liked, and he would probably hate, both films equally. Though that last bit made him snigger, he actually had hoped she preferred one to the other, because obviously, he had no real opinion.

"Well, 'Heathers' is on first," he said, starting to pour the water over the tea bags. "We'd have to wait another half hour for 'Scary Movie' to start, so we may as well watch 'Heathers'." He paused a beat, putting the lid back onto the teapot, shrugging with a smirk. "Since I'll likely hate them both equally, I mean."

She pouted a little. "I'll have to remember that," she said. "Does not compete well with engrossing books." She did smile at his comment about the cookies. "Well, you'll have to decorate your own," she informed him. "I never get very far if I have to decorate more than one or two, what with the eating of them that generally follows immediately after."

Nodding, she moved around to pull one of the Cokes out of the fridge, popping the top of the can.

"You really drink tea with pizza?" she asked as she watched him preparing his tea. "It just seems ... odd to me. English thing, or ... you thing? I mean, they have tea with everything, right?" Well. So she'd heard.

Tipping her head to the side, she stifled a yawn and thought that tomorrow she'd try the 'staying in and relaxing' thing.

That pout was positively precious, especially with the way Mercy's bottom lip protruded just a little. Severus found himself momentarily distracted with thoughts of kissing her, but he shook himself out of it a second later. But she had to know that he was only teasing. If he really thought she was in trouble ... of course she knew.

He nodded when Mercy said he'd have to decorate his own biscuits. He had expected that, but the rest of her comment made him smile. "Were you planning to take any of them to the party Saturday? Because if so, I can take responsibility for decorating all of them, so that you won't be tempted."

"It's an English thing, and a me thing," Severus answered with a slight shrug. "But I won't have it with milk if I'm having pizza, or curry. Milk simply doesn't go well with either of those."

He frowned ever so slightly at the yawn, but that wasn't surprising. The last time she'd spent the afternoon shopping, she'd gotten tired fairly quickly, as well, so he shouldn't take it personally. Still, as he poured himself a cup, he quietly asked, "Am I boring you already?"

"I ... wasn't, actually. No one said anything about bringing refreshments. I assume they'll be provided." She grinned. "Besides, I wasn't planning on making enough for the whole army. Just enough for me and whoever happens to wander in and find the plate of them."

She paused and looked thoughtful. "But if you want to bring some to the party, then by all means. Decorate away." She grinned over to him, wondering if he would follow through on that.

Nodding to his explanation of appropriate foods to drink tea with (or to not drink tea with), she glanced to the tea pot. "I can't imagine. But I'm not much of a tea or coffee person, so I suppose that has a lot to do with it."

Mercy shook her head to his question. "Just wearing myself out. Going to try relaxing tomorrow and seeing if that works for me. It's just ... weird for me to sit still for days and days like this."

Severus nodded at her explanation, but then when she suggested that he take some to the party, he shook his head. "I wasn't planning to go, actually," he said, shrugging.

"Probably does," he added, nodding. "I'm not a fan of fizzy drinks, myself." Then he nodded again, toward the can in her hand, in case she hadn't heard that term before. "That's what we call them -- fizzy drinks. I've heard that beer goes well with pizza, but I've never tried it myself, and I'd prefer to save the wine for an Italian dish that requires a fork."

He took a sip of his tea, even if it was still a bit too hot to drink properly, and then nodded to what she said regarding relaxing the following day. "Would taking a walk along the beach with me be too strenuous to qualify as relaxing?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. Sod leaving her alone. He hadn't really wanted to do that anyway, in the first place.

"Ah," she said, but she wasn't precisely surprised. He hadn't exactly struck her as the party-going sort. "Well, I'll tell you all about what you missed," she promised him.

"Makes sense," she agreed to the name of the beverage. "Not too much of a beer fan, personally. If I'm going to drink it's usually mixed drinks at home because of aforementioned shenanigans when I drink in public."

She tilted her head as she regarded him. He hadn't really struck her as a walk on the beach person, either, but she shrugged. "If it's not pouring," she said. She'd manage a beach walk in drizzle, but not in a monsoon. "Sounds like fun."

"Somehow I had a feeling that you would," Severus answered quietly, with a small smile. Though he really didn't think he would miss much of anything at all. Except, perhaps, some tasty biscuits.

"That's the reason I've never tried it," he said with a chuckle. "I do like stout, but stout with pizza doesn't sound the slightest bit appetizing to me." Though he didn't have pizza all that often, either, to be honest.

The tilted head didn't surprise him at all. She hadn't pegged him as the walk-on-the-beach sort any more than the party sort, he imagined. And in truth, he wasn't the walk-on-the-beach sort, as a rule. But he also wasn't a film-watching sort, either, and he'd given that a go, since it appeared to be something she enjoyed. "All right," he said finally, smiling, before he took another sip of tea. "If it's not pouring, that is."

The difference in terms was interesting, and she found she was getting quite the lesson in languages having an English suitemate. A little grin touched her lips before she leaned back against the counter. She figured she may as well hang around while waiting for the pizza to cook -- she wouldn't want to burn it, after all.

"It shouldn't be," she offered. "It looks like it's been leaning toward clearing up lately," she added before she tipped her head back slightly. Her hair pooled on the counter until she lifted her head again.

Pizza and a movie, then cookies and frosting them ... then ... hm. Reading maybe, or just chatting.

Severus fairly winced when Mercy let her hair fall onto the counter that way. It wasn't that her hair wasn't nice and all. It just ... didn't belong where food was prepared, in his opinion. He would simply make a point to give the counter an extra good wiping down later, when he did the washing up.

"Well, that is probably a good sign, then," he said, raising his teacup for another sip. Because, frankly, he wasn't looking forward to getting drenched again, as he had on his caterpillar hunt. Though even if it only rained a little, he could still use an Impervius Charm to keep them relatively dry. And at least it would be tropical rain, instead of cold English rain.

She nodded in agreement, lapsing into silence. She gazed for a moment toward the sink before she shifted her blue eyes toward him and nodded toward the couch. "You can go get settled," she said. "I can bring the food in." It would only be a few more minutes anyway, and she wasn't precisely inclined to stand in that sort of awkward silence that tended to fall between two people who didn't know one another well enough to properly slide to a new topic.

Mercy turned away from the counter to peek into the oven to gauge the progress of dinner before she flashed Sev another little smile. Maybe ... she wouldn't get to cookies tonight. Pizza and a movie, a shower and a book sounded almost like a better plan than baking. She could do that in the morning.

Well, she'd see how she felt after the movie, and decide from there.

Severus hesitated for a moment, frowning slightly, and then nodded. He didn't feel quite right about her serving him dinner whilst he lounged on the sofa, but he supposed as long as he did the washing up afterward, it was fair enough. "Very well," he finally answered, pouring himself a little more tea before he made his way to the sofa.

He grabbed the remote once more and switched on the telly, turning it to the channel that was showing Heathers. It would still be a few minutes before the film started, but hopefully the pizza would be ready in time for that. Then again, Mercy had seen it already, so she likely wouldn't be too put out if she missed the beginning.

Her brows lifted slightly at his hesitation, though she was more amused than anything else. She wondered what had caused it. Maybe he wanted to help in the kitchen, too?

With a shrug, she decided not to assume anything as she pulled the larger cutting board out from beneath the cabinet to set it on the stove so she could transfer the pizza onto it when it was done.

Exhaling a soft but contented sigh, Mercy set about transferring the hot pizza, slicing it up and distributing it onto the plates. Balancing it all carefully (with a few napkins, just in case), she carted dinner out to the couch.

Pizza, a movie, a Coke ... it seemed like a decent evening to her, and she flashed Sev a smile before turning her attention to the movie.
