RP: In the Mall
Characters: Ariana, Salem
Time/Date: night time, October 23
Location: Halloween store, mall
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Ari's curious
Status: Complete

After she saw the notices about doing something for Halloween -- and the decorations in one of the hallways -- she was curious about the entire affair. They'd certainly never done anything to celebrate it. Not that she could recall, anyway. Maybe they had before the incident, but she didn't recall any after.

So she'd wandered out of the hotel after picking up one of the umbrellas by the door. She tromped through the warm drizzle, stomping in any puddles she noticed along the path. By the time she actually reached the mall, she was very wet and a little muddy.

Shaking off the water from the umbrella, Ariana wrapped the strap around her wrist before she made her way toward the Halloween store. Muddy prints showed her path very clearly for anyone who wanted to follow her, though by the time she'd reached the store in question, most of the mud had fallen off to leave only wet prints.

Easing into the store, she looked around curiously. Some of what she saw was gruesome and seemed very odd to her -- skulls with red eyes that lit up and bony fingers reaching out of a patch of fake ground in front of a Styrofoam headstone. There were other things too. Lights and some sort of shimmery tinsel and black and orange and purple garlands and toward the back, there were costumes.

Ariana gravitated toward those, pushing aside the layers of fabric as she tried to see if there were any costumes that fit her that she'd like to try on ...

Salem had been exploring the new mall area, always curious to see what he could acquire and make his own, especially now that he had his own rooms. Oh, the possibilities! Too bad there weren't any feline-capable shape-shifters here. It would be quite the party.

He sighed as he padded along, finding all sorts of interesting things. He'd drug some of them to a hiding place behind a loose panel, and he'd come back for those later, but for right now, there was more to see.

The Halloween store made him snicker. Oh, these mortals! Always playing with things they didn't understand. Still, there might be interesting things inside, and he padded in, curious and bright-eyed as ever.

He collected a small witch's hat which looked quite charming on him and stayed on by a nice and not too uncomfortable rubber band, when he turned a corner and saw the girl.

"Ah! Looking for something a little fun?" Salem rarely went into preliminaries.

Ari jumped a little at the voice and she turned, chin tilted to look up. She was, of course, expecting a person. Not seeing one, she dropped her chin down and smiled a little when she saw the cat.

It wasn't Ches, but it was a talking cat all the same, and that was exciting to her. "I don't know what I was looking for," she admitted. "I just came in to see what was here so I could tell Lizzy in case she wanted to decorate."

She tipped her head to one side. "What's your name? We used to have a cat, and his name was Cheshire, but I think he's gone now. I'm Ariana."

"Ah-ha! Exploring! This is why I like children, my dear. You face things most adults quake at and still explore bravely. Very nice!" Salem preened at her attention.

"I'm Salem Saberhagen, temporary cat. A pleasure to meet you, Ariana. "

He purred lightly and looked around, then back at her, the little hat on his head shifting slightly. "They seem to have quite a bit of stuff, even if it is rather strange to me that people like Halloween." His tone was one of amusement

"Temporary cat?" Her brows elevated slightly. "Like an animagus then?" But if he was that, couldn't he change out? Unless they were keeping him from doing that.

She did recall her manners though, and she flushed a little. "It's very nice to meet you as well, Mr Saberhagen." She wasn't sure how, exactly, she was meant to be addressing temporary cats.

Ari shook her head slightly. "I've never had a Halloween before," she admitted. "I don't know what we're supposed to really do or anything like that. Why shouldn't people like it?" she inquired as she glanced to the cat.

"I assume that is a wizard who turns into a cat on your world? No, I was forced this was as part of a curse by those who disliked my way of doing things. I am stuck this way for 100 years." He grumped about it. "I've never noticed how very long that span of time was, until now."

He cast a charming look toward her, giving her kitty cuteness to counteract the mundane silly details of his life. "Just call me Salem, please."

He sighed, and nodded. "Well, most people use it as an opportunity to party, but back on my world, it is a very real celebration for those who practice Wicca and wizardry, and a very dangerous time to be gallivanting around."

"Well. Not just a cat. An animagus can be any sort of animal." She shrugged a little. "I only really heard stories," she admitted.

But when Salem explained his story, she looked a little glum for him. "Why didn't he like your way of doing things?"

Ari shook her head a little, ready to contradict him. Halloween wasn't anything dangerous. Or was it? Her brow furrowed a little as she rocked back on her heels. Maybe it was and her brothers just never told her. "My brothers are wizards," she said quietly. "My mum was a witch," she added quietly.

Salem squinted. "Ah, okay. A definitely different world." He hmmmed a little thinking. "My way was a little too over the top for him. I wanted to help create order." He sighed as only a dramatic storyteller could sigh.

He blinked. "Perhaps it is not so in your world, but Halloween is very important to wizards and witches. Perhaps it is not so on your world."

He grumbled and settled to his haunches. "This whole different worlds thing is definitely odd. And hard to deal with. I'm already bound to this form, and have my powers mostly bound, for a hundred years. isn't that enough?"

Ariana shivered slightly, because it reminded her too much of things she'd overheard Gellert telling Albus. "Maybe he just wanted a different kind of order," she guessed, though she obviously had no idea about the situation. "It wasn't right though, to turn you into a cat." Even she knew that to force a form on another being was wrong.

"Maybe it is. My brothers are always at school for Halloween," she said. "So if it means anything to proper wizards ... I don't know about it."

She smiled sympathetically. "I don't think anyone really wants to be here," she murmured. "it is strange, but you can learn a lot from other people, too. Someone with a different kind of magic from mine let me borrow his books so I could try to learn his kind of magic."

Salem nodded, preening a little. Ah sympathetic children! Always good.

"Thank you. I am, sadly, stuck this way." He nodded sagely, or as well as he could do, as a cat. "Maybe so, but you will learn it in time, I am sure."

He perked up his ears at the last words. "Hm, well, that was very nice of him. How is it going?"

She shuffled her feet slightly and shrugged. "I ... not good, I guess. I read slow and there's been a lot of things happening and ... I haven't really gotten together with him or Mr. Snape. Mr. Snape was going to teach me ways to clear my mind."

Ariana exhaled a soft sigh. "It's not so bad here though. The magic. They ... the way they block everyone's magic? I haven't had any accidents since the reavers, and even then I only froze the mattress." She shifted slightly and looked around before she laced her fingers behind her back.

"I can't do magic properly," she clarified, suddenly aware he probably wouldn't have any idea that she was broken and couldn't work magic properly.

When she said that, she managed what few do, she touched Salem deeper and more profoundly than most. "Oh my poor dear..." He padded to her, filled with sympathy. "If I was myself, I would do my utmost to aid you. As it is, I can only tell you this; whatever else you accomplish, magic is about heart, and so, in this moment at least, you could do wonders where it possible." A nod, and Salem tapped at her foot with a paw.

Salem hated not being able to do true magic, even more than being a cat. But this, for her magic to be not working, and now blocked so she couldn't even learn it? he was angry, and woeful, all at once, and somewhere in him a spark of real anger grew at those who held them.

She nodded a little. "I had an accident when I was little and it made my magic go all funny," she said. It wasn't the complete truth, but it was close enough for a first encounter with someone. "So it didn't work proper and I couldn't control it so I couldn't go to school and learn it proper. I never even had a wand," she added softly.

Speaking of, her eyes strayed to a pretty blue dress that had a blue-ribbon wrapped wand with a star at the end. It wasn't a real wand, she knew, but maybe if she was a fairy princess for Halloween, she could pretend for a little while she was a proper witch.

"I'm trying," she finally said quietly. "I read every day and I try to be calm and maybe when everyone's not so busy I can start learning."

He nodded, listening. "I believe you will make it. And if noone else can help you, maybe I can." He waggled his ears, glancing at the wand.

"Would you like a wand?"

He pondered this. He didn't have a lot of magic, but what little he had was potent, and this wouldn't be for him. Which, really, was surprising. For a moment, he pondered that, but one look at her face made him nod. He'd do it.

"They had one they were going to let me borrow," she said softly. She didn't know if they had it still after the move, but ... she was sure they'd work something out for her. "But ... I thought for Halloween I could use this costume," she said as she gestured to the one in question. Which he'd apparently already caught onto, if his question was any indication.

"Then I could at least pretend, for a little while."

She smiled softly to him before she tilted her head. "Are you going to dress up for Halloween? Or go if there's a party?"

He plotted, oh yes he did. "I'd be glad to celebrate Halloween with you, then, and explain, along the way, a little of how witches and wizards of my world celebrate it." He bounced a little on cat feet.

"Yes, I will. I have a hat all set up for it. And a party seems like a god time to meet everyone, yes?" He looked up at her with eyes full of warmth. This young girl just might be fun!

"All right," she agreed with a little smile. Stepping boldly forward, Ariana tugged the costume from the rack and studied it. Wings and a wand; she could be a fairy princess like on the movies. Maybe she could even get someone to do her hair for her.

"A lot of people should be there," she agreed with a slight nod. "I'm sure a lot of people haven't met each other because they were on different islands but aren't anymore."

Salem watched her, genuinely happy for the child. She seemed happy, and content with such simple things, something he would never be. For a moment, just a moment, he felt a pang of envy.

"It'll be interesting to see everyone interact, and meet. Perhaps it will be a new start." Or a new ending. He wondered what mayhem might happen at a gathering of everyone.

"Well, it's a new place," she murmured as she looked through the costumes to see if maybe there was something that Lizzy might like. Some of the grownup costumes didn't look like they had enough fabric to them, and her brow furrowed a little.

Well, grownups were weird. Lizzy had shared that revelation with her, and Ari thought she was inclined to agree.

"So it is sort of like a new start," she elaborated to her half-finished thought. "Do you think they'll have punch?"

Salem eyed her, listening. She seemed nice, and was talking quite intelligently for a human child. Not bad.

"I think it is likely." He padded around, peering at costumes and costume pieces. "Most such parties do. Both adult and child punch, I imagine." He nodded. He would likely indulge in some adult punch.

Her brow furrowed at that. "What's the difference?" she inquired. She was only three years off from being an adult in her world; surely she could sneak some adult punch.

If it was any good, maybe she'd get some for Lizzy.

But maybe he meant it had alcohol in it, and her nose wrinkled a little at the thought of that. She'd had some firewhiskey, just a sip, just once, when her dad was still at home and she hadn't cared for it at all.

"Alcohol, usually, or magical enhancement. Perhaps there will not be such, with kids around, but I rarely have seen adults gather and not have some kind of it available."

He peered up at her, settling near her feet to watch her choose.

Human children were much more interesting, and with the right buttering up, more malleable.

"What kind of magical enhancement?" she inquired as she turned away from the costumes; Lizzy probably wouldn't like anything she picked, but maybe they'd come here tomorrow or the next day and pick something out.

With a shrug, she decided she was probably done here, and she tilted her head. "I'm going to go back inside, before it starts to rain again," she informed Salem. "Will you be staying here or would you like me to walk in with you?"

With perking ears, Salem rumbled close. "Oh, enthusiasm and cheerful charms, things to simulate the more positive elements of alcohol, or some of the negative ones. Adults are odd creatures, and rarely make sense." He often felt that non-warlocks were the oddest of all. Wizards and witches, pshaw, they always made a silliness of their magics.

He looked up at her and grinned a cat grin. "I'd be delighted to walk with you. It's rather enjoyable to have someone to talk to."

Ari smiled. "I know what a cheering charm is," she offered. She imagined it had to be similar to -- if not the same as -- what hew as talking about.

Folding the costume over her arm, holding onto the wand part of it, Ariana started out of the store. She hoped the costume wouldn't get too damp, and thought that if she was a proper witch, she could cast a charm to repel the rain better than the umbrella she had.

Once they were at the entrance, she pushed the umbrella in front of her before opening it so it opened outside. Ducking underneath it as she lifted it above her head, she tilted it a little to offer Salem some protection as well for the walk back.

His ears perked up as he looked up at her. "Truly? Then our magics are perhaps not as far apart as I had thought." And maybe one of them could free him of this form. Oh dear. That bore some thought! Salem grinned, then looked up at her as they went.

He settled in close, under the umbrella. "What a terrible weather. Er, for me, anyway. Do you like the rain?"

"I don't know. We had a lot of it at home. It was nicer to sit by the window and watch from the inside when there was a fire going. Ours was cold rain though."

This rain was warmer. Still as dreary, but...warmer.

Ariana was careful to avoid the puddles this time; she didn't want to accidentally muddy Salem.

"Maybe they aren't so different," she agreed as she retreated to the previous train of thought. "Maybe magic's really all the same, but we call it different things and use it in different ways."

Salem kept close by her feet, but out of her path. Blah on rain!

He listened carefully, as he grumbled to himself about mud and water and having to take a bath when he got home. "It could be. I would not call myself wise enough to know." Of course, that wasn't true, he did think he knew, and he thought she was right. And he wished he had the keys to unlocking his curse.

Ariana lapsed into silence for a moment as she navigated carefully, managing the umbrella and the costume.

"I bet Magius would probably know," she said to Salem. "You could ask him. He's smart and knows a lot about magic."

If anyone here was the one to go to, she'd bet it was him. "Or maybe Mr. Snape. He seems pretty smart too," she amended after a moment. They'd both offered to help her, so surely, they both knew what they were doing.

He listened, trotting along beside her, smiling as she managed to move with her encumbrance. "Hm. Well, I will look into asking them, perhaps. I am less bold, I think, than most." A rare admittance.

He moved with her, toward the hotel. He could open the door when they got there. That was one thing he could do as long as it was not somehow a greedy act. For a moment, he railed inside against those who had imprisoned him so.

"Oh, but they're very nice," she assured Salem. She had no reason to think either of them would be rude to a cat. "I could introduce you someday, if you wanted," she offered after a slight pause to dodge a particularly large, muddy puddle.

When they reached the hotel, she smiled when Salem opened the door. That was handy. Shaking off her umbrella outside, she closed it carefully before she toed off her muddy shoes, leaving them by the door with all the rest of the muddy shoes so she didn't track mud.

"So I'll see you later?" she said to the cat. "I want to go show Lizzy what I have and tell her she has to go pick one out."

A good wish from someone fond of both things.
