A Disillusionment Charm would have been his first choice, but unfortunately, that wouldn't work. Not if he was reading. Disillusioning his book would rather defeat the purpose, as he would no longer be able to see the print. Nor could he Disillusion himself and leave the book without camouflage. A floating book on its own might not arouse too much suspicion, but a floating book that turned its own pages likely would.
Not that Severus was turning many pages at the moment. In fact, his gaze had lingered on the same paragraph for several minutes now, and he still hadn't the first clue what the words said. He only stopped attempting to read, and realized that he was clenching his jaw, when his face started to ache. Setting the book aside, Severus opened his mouth and massaged the muscles in his cheeks with his fingers whilst working his jaw.
This, he had finally concluded, was why their captors had decided that he and Mercy ought to share a suite: because he would find a way to spoil things, and then they would still be forced to live together. Slow, agonizing torture for them both. Well, slow, agonizing torture for him, at least. It probably didn't matter all that much to her, since she didn't appear to fancy him nearly as much as he fancied her.
And the irony -- the bitter irony -- was that he couldn't even read to take his mind off things. Off her. Off how, just when he'd thought he'd been rather safe in that regard, he'd managed to put her off him anyway. And she still intruded on his thoughts, as he sat there brooding instead of processing a single word. Maybe in time, he'd be able to read again.
