RP: Again?
Characters: Juliet, Hugo
Time/Date: late afternoon, October 17
Location: Algul Siento, kitchen
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Juliet arrives
Status: complete

Juliet tossed the Blackberry onto the bed, slightly annoyed. This wasn't supposed to happen to her again. So, it wasn't a lab like before, and that was good. She didn't think it counted as a safe-house when they were talking about kidnapping her for observation. She'd seen icons in the network of people who looked like Jaime and Romeo, but investigation proved that one was Tyler, and while the other one was Jaime, it wasn't the Jaime she knew. Which was weird. There was also a Wes look-alike, but that was a Tristan.

Eventually, she'd gotten tired of scouring back in the network and finding familiar faces that turned out to not be familiar at all.

Maybe this wasn't about ... the rain. Maybe this wasn't actually like before. Maybe this was something different, but ... why her? She supposed everyone else here was asking themselves the same thing.

With her hands tucked into the pockets of her jeans, Juliet prowled the halls of the hotel. She saw the names on the doors, and on the second floor she saw Jaime's name. Standing outside that door, she stared at it and wondered who Malcolm Reynolds was. Jaime -- her Jaime -- had been with Alex.

Weird. She thought about knocking to see if this Jaime knew someone like her, but thought better of it. She could meet her ... later.

Turning away from the door, Juliet trotted down the stairs. Once she reached the lobby area, she looked around curiously. It definitely wasn't like any hotel lobby she'd seen. Not that she'd seen a lot, really. It actually kind of resembled the lobby at the hotel the captives had moved into, and she bit at her lower lip. Maybe she'd been whisked into some parallel alternate reality or something.

Stepping through the dining area, Juliet crossed to the kitchen and opened the fridge. She peeked inside before she drew out a can of Coke. Popping it open, she stood where she was and took a sip before peering around. She wondered if they could leave the hotel or not. She didn't see anyone around to stop her, so she eyed the door curiously and waited to see if any kidnapper showed up to tell her what was what or something.

The new hotel was nicer and the scenery was better, but Hugo wasn't sure what to do with himself here. He missed Lily and Tristan and he felt a little awkward having the pool of people in this hotel be so small. He wasn't sure why since he was generally a social person, but maybe it was a safety in numbers sort of thing. He also didn't appreciate Chase being on the island, but so far there hadn't been any issue.

Heading down to the kitchen for a late lunch, he paused and cocked his head to the side as he studied the girl who was standing there. She looked exactly like Juliet, but from Tristan and Reid he knew not to completely assume that it must be her. On the other hand, he did tend to forget that he was probably older than he should have been to some people and it wasn't as if he'd ever been best mates with the younger girl in the first place so perhaps she wouldn't even recognize him if it was the Juliet he had known.

Therefore, logically, he knew he should just start off by saying hello, but his mouth worked before his brain and instead he asked, "Juliet?"

That was creepy, because she didn't know him. Her brows lifted as she studied him, and she nodded slowly. "Do I know you?" She was, of course, lacking in any sort of English accent, though she had a slight New England one. She hadn't been out of that neck of the woods for very long. Not long enough to lose it, at any rate.

She didn't recognize him from Mr. Thayer's place or from the lab. But maybe ... she was to him what Reid and Tristan and even Jaime were to her -- people who looked the same but just ... weren't.

"Juliet St. Laurent, from ..." she hesitated, but she wasn't keen on flashing around where she lived. That habit, at least, had gotten to her. "New England," she settled on. It was broad enough, but close enough at the same time. "Who're you?"

At first, Hugo didn't think anything of her not knowing him. She was obviously just not Juliet. Then he furrowed his brow because she was Juliet, but not... the Juliet that he knew. She was from the states, even. This was ... somehow weirder than the Reid and Tristan look alike thing, wasn't it?

"Ah. Um. I'm Hugo," he managed, realizing he shouldn't just stand there like an idiot and think about the situation.

"I ... well, you look like someone I knew from home. Actually, she was named Juliet too, but she wasn't ... well, she wasn't you, apparently." He scratched the side of his neck and smiled apologetically. "Are you completely new and I'm managing to make things even more confusing for you?"

"Completely new," she agreed. "But I read pretty far back on the forums. Network ... whatever. You have a Jaime that's not my Jaime. Like, right down to her ability. It's so weird." Well, she was probably assuming on the ability part, but there were enough implications in there. "And your Tyler looks like Romeo, and your Tristan looks like Wes."

She paused. "Is Malcolm an old guy? Because if we're following along on weird coincidences, my Jaime was with Dr. Snowden, and he was ... way older than her. So I'm not gonna be at all surprised if Malcolm looks just like Dr. Snowden." She paused. "I mean, their names were on a door, so I assume they're together."

Yup, this place was four thousand colors of weird, but she wasn't strapped down or drugged right now so it had to be better than the lab, right?

Right?

"Nice to meet you," she added belatedly. "Have you been here long? Or .. captive, long? I guess here's the new place I saw mentioned?"

Hugo paused. He wasn't sure he would call Malcolm old -- not compared to many of the witches and wizards he had known -- but he was certainly older.

"Mal is older than her, yeah," he admitted with a curious grin. He wondered if there was a Hugo look-a-like running around her world, but if there was, she apparently didn't know him. "You'll have to let me know if he looks the same. The Juliet I knew was a witch and a werewolf, if you were curious."

He paused briefly, trying to figure out how long he had been here. "I've been captive about a month. This is the new place. The dozen or so of us here arrived just a few days ago."

"Werewolf, really? I don't think we have any of those. I mean, Libby can ..." she hesitated. "Turn into a wolf, but she can do it whenever she wants and she doesn't have any ... silver allergies or anything like legends say werewolves do. So really she's .. a shape-shifter, I guess."

Witch though ... she had visions of pointy hats and brooms and black cats, and she grinned a little.

"So is he around? So I can look at him and let you know if he looks like Dr. Snowden." She grinned and took another sip of her Coke.

"A month, huh?" She frowned. "Is ... well, how long has this been going on overall, do you know? I was kidnapped before, but only held for a few weeks before we broke out."

"He's ... ah," Hugo furrowed his brow. Mal was ... taken, wasn't he? Some people had come back, so he thought that Malcolm might as well, but who knew what their captors had planned. "Well, a lot of folks are still on the old island, and that's where Malcolm was, but the people in charge took him and a few others and we're not sure where they are currently."

He scratched his cheek. That was a long winded way of saying he didn't know where Mal was, but oh well.

"Some people have been here a few months. I dunno exact times. Who... why were you kidnapped before, if you don't mind me asking?" He supposed it was a nosy question, but some people were very open with their pasts here and a lot of things that needed to be hidden in 'real' life didn't matter on the island.

"No one's managed to break out, here," he added with a shake of his head.

She nodded slightly. "I ... read about ... some of that. I didn't know he was ... still gone." Her brow furrowed briefly before she shook her head. "Maybe he's at home though," she offered optimistically. She'd just gotten here; what did she know about what they did?

Juliet hesitated, shifting her weight uneasily. Did it matter? They were all captive here, right? Lifting one hand, she cupped her palm and nodded toward it to direct Hugo's attention to it. Her face scrunched into a look of concentration before the light started to bend away and refract off the empty space above her hand, creating a dark ball of shadow there. "I bend light," she said. "Don't know how to explain it, really, but the people who survived the rain ... they ... had mutations triggered. Our Jaime found things, too. She found us Mr. Thayer's safe-house.

"Can't your Jaime do that?"

"Maybe he is," Hugo agreed with a smile he didn't completely feel. He wasn't about to tell her what most people thought happened to folks when they 'went home.' He couldn't tell how old she was, but she looked young enough that he didn't want to ... scare her any more than being kidnapped already had. She seemed to be handling it in stride, though.

Watching her bend light was pretty neat, actually, and he grinned in a fascinated sort of way as she demonstrated.

"Yeah, our Jaime also finds things," he agreed, attempting to wrap his brain around different realities and people who were the same but different. It was very odd.

"A rain triggered mutations?" He asked, seeking clarification when what she had said sunk in.

Juliet almost asked why Jaime couldn't find their way out then before she supposed that she probably had tried and maybe there really wasn't a way out. That was a bummer.

"It had ... um. Chemicals in it? Like radiation or something. I mean, it killed a lot of people. Romeo's sister got sick and died from it, but he ... got a power. So it was really random in what it did.

"'cept the government got all freaked out about it because of course there were as--jerks out there that did things with their powers. Broke laws and killed and stole from banks and stuff. So the government decided that obviously everyone who got rained on was devil-spawn, and ... they started getting people together into safe places? Supposedly? But they were really tossing them into labs."

She shrugged. "We ... well, I wasn't in one for very long, but other people were in longer. Jaime was in for months and they did a lot of dumb experiments on her." Juliet sighed. "She got kidnapped again, right from the real safe-house, and was in a lab for another few months."

Juliet wondered if the Jaime here had been in and out of labs, or if she'd stayed safe at whatever version of a safehouse her world had. Or if maybe in the Jaime-here's world, the government took a different approach. She'd have to find her and talk to her when she showed up.

Hugo sucked in his cheeks to keep from grinning when Juliet almost swore and then changed her mind. The topic of conversation wasn't amusing and he didn't want to seem like he was laughing at her; he did wonder if she just didn't swear around strangers or if he looked old enough to be... someone who would tell her to watch her mouth.

"Well, I'm sorry you got kidnapped again. For kidnappers, they give us a decent amount of freedom when they're not inflicting some sort of dangerous situation on us. We're split between two islands, but there're some folks around your age on both, I think."

He hadn't done the best job of keeping up with who was on this island. He knew who wasn't. He figured he should try to socialize more, especially since he didn't know how long it was going to take for the other island to move over here.

"Dangerous like ... how?" she asked. "I mean, do they drag you off for surgeries and stuff, or ..." She shrugged. What else was dangerous? Pushing them out in front of buses? "Yeah," she reflected. "What does go on here? I mean, the note was something about ... chemicals and smells and attacks. They ... what do they have attack us? Lions?"

She grinned, because that just seemed weird. What would be attacking them?

Sipping at her Coke, she shifted again to lean more comfortably against the counter. "Do the people back home miss us? Or ... notice? Or don't you know that?"

"Ah. As far as I know, no one's been dragged off for surgeries," he began and while his first instinct was to try to soften some of it, if she was going to be here experiencing it, it wouldn't help her any to not know what really went on here.

"No lions either, but there might be bears coming up," he grinned, even though it was true.

"Before they attacked with a bunch of dementors," he realized she would have no idea what those were and went on to explain, "Creatures from ... my reality. They take away all your happy feelings and can suck out your soul. They're usually pretty serious attacks, but in that case the wizards who could took turns patrolling to keep the dementors from getting folks."

Shaking his head, he added, "No, somehow the people back home won't notice. My cousin is here as well, but she's from my past and she got here before I did. I had no idea she had been here. Dunno how they do it, though."

"So we just have to wait for the tigers," she quipped. Then thought to clarify. "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my ..."

Well it amused her at any rate, and she shrugged a little before she looked around the kitchen as if expecting to see the bears here, now.

"Suck out your soul," she echoed as she gave him a very 'are you serious' sort of look. Because he couldn't be. Souls weren't ... tangible. You couldn't have a soul operation. So how did anything suck a soul?

Well, maybe in the magical world, people had tangible souls. What did she know?

"Weird. About them not noticing. Do you think it's clones, or maybe they just somehow freeze time? Or plunk people back down from the same point they took them?"

Hugo chuckled quietly and at this point he wouldn't have been horribly surprised if they sent lions and tigers and bears after them. They'd probably think it was funny.

"You know, I was going with the plunking people back down theory, but that's probably only because the idea of being cloned disturbs me a bit," he answered, but there wasn't much about this place that wasn't at least a little disturbing.

And being stuck back into time at the exact moment he'd been taken would at least mean that he got to continue living his life.

"It is, isn't it? Disturbing, I mean. To think there's more than one of you running around. But it must be similar for the people who have ... look-alikes here. Not the same, but not so very different."

She shrugged and tipped her head back to finish her Coke before she looked around. Finding what looked like a recycle box, she dropped the can in that.

"It's weird for me to know there's someone out there with my name and face, even if she's not a clone of me."

She exhaled and gestured around. "So is there anywhere off-limits or places I shouldn't venture?"

"True," he agreed; so far he hadn't run into or heard about anyone being a double for him. He assumed there was one out there in some world, though. That odds seemed to go in that direction.

"I honestly haven't explored much yet," he admitted. He had taken a couple walks, but he didn't want to go deep into the jungle on his own. He figured he would when Lily and Tristan got here. "Nothing's really off-limits, but um, there are sharks in the water.

"No one's been here long enough to really have a good idea of what's in the jungle, but there were traps on the old island so.. better safe than sorry," he was probably rambling, but he didn't want her to think it was safe to just roam anywhere -- though there was a chance it was safe, it just didn't seem likely to him.

"So ... stay out of the water. Got it." She almost pointed out that she didn't have a suit, but she supposed it didn't really matter. She had some clothes up in her room. Maybe there was somewhere out there to get more.

"Also stay out of the jungle," she added with a brief nod. "I think I can manage that."

Juliet flashed him a little smile. "Guess I'll go see how the exploring thing works for me. Staying on the beaten paths and stuff. But thanks, for the information and I'll ... see you later, I guess?"

"You're welcome and see you later," Hugo agreed with a smile. It sounded like she knew to be careful so he didn't add that. He moved further into the kitchen to set about making his lunch that he had gotten distracted from.
