The rattling and shaking woke her up, as it had a couple of other times through the night. This one though was more violent than the others, and she jerked awake. She clutched at the covers, and only because she was in a panic did she not notice she was alone in the bed. The quaking felt as though it was going on forever, and Katrina whimpered a little pathetically when it finally did end.
Then, and only then, did she notice that she was the sole occupant of the bed. "Ichabod?" she called out. The bathroom door was open, so he wasn't in there. He wouldn't have wandered off without waking her to let her know where he was going, surely. So what did that leave?
Katrina shivered nervously before she carefully eased out of bed. She dressed quickly, pulling her hair into a rough pony-tail. She straightened the few things that had fallen, and she opened the door slowly. Peering out into the hall, she listened. She thought she could hear faint voices coming from downstairs, the tight, slightly panicked voices of people enduring traumatic experiences.
Well, wasn't this one? She wondered if other people were now missing. There'd been a lot of people missing lately, and it frightened her to wonder why they were all vanishing like this.
With her lips slightly parted, her breath a little shallower than she'd have liked, Katrina started down the stairs. She wanted to check the directory to see if Ichabod had been moved. Perhaps he'd simply gone back up to his assigned room, but now she couldn't recall if she'd seen any of his belongings in their room. Had they simply moved him back?
Katrina moved quietly past the kitchen toward the part of the lobby that held the directory. She started to turn the pages, and she frowned a little. There was his name, in his old room, but he had no reason to be there, did he? Still, she thought it was best that she go look.
A few moments later, she was back in the lobby to double-check the book. He hadn't been in his room, nor (as she'd discovered since the door hadn't been locked) were any of his belongings present. She found him again in the directory, and simply stared at the book, utterly perplexed. He was listed, but he wasn't present, and she didn't understand.
