Simon drew the needle slowly out of Jaime's left arm and placed the band-aid over the puncture wound. "Going to be all right?" He asked softly, trying to keep his tone upbeat.
"No," she replied frankly as she gazed at the pink line running down her right arm. She didn't really recall the actual attempt to take her own life, but she recalled the aftermath well enough. Then just when things were back to normal, when they were doing good ... this happened. Mal was gone.
She and Lily had scoured the directory again, front to back, even the blank pages, but ... nothing. They'd debated: was it like last time and they'd be back in a few days? Were they gone for good? Would they come back? Would they be whole and with their memories intact if they did? They had no answers of course, and Jaime had eventually wandered off. She didn't like burdening Lily like that; Lily had lost Balthazar and James. But she'd lost Mal and Dug.
Simon had lost Kaylee and River. Ariana had lost Lizzy and Cheshire. They'd wondered if there was some pattern buried in there somewhere, but they couldn't figure out how some of the others had fit in.
"Are you going to at least fake it?" Simon asked as he studied Jaime. He wished he had access to proper meds for her, because he was a little afraid to leave her alone.
Jaime shook her head slightly. "Nope," she muttered dully.
Simon hadn't really expected any other sort of response from her, so he nodded slightly as he moved to settle down into one of the chairs. The door to the infirmary was open, and he watched the hallway in case anyone ... well, anyone he was looking for passed by. Otherwise, he was going to stay with Jaime until she fell asleep. It wasn't like he had a warm bed with a warmer Kaylee waiting for him.
River was gone, too, and he tried not to think about that at all. It made him sick to wonder what they were doing to his sister. He wasn't naive enough to believe she was safe at home, back on Serenity. No, if she wasn't dead, she was being used as an experiment, again. This time, he didn't think he could save her. It wasn't a matter of money, of resources this time.
Simon closed his eyes briefly before he tipped his head back and swallowed. This place was cruel. Absolutely cruel.
