"I have used nature as gear before, but as my home is in a respectably large city, I end up using more man-made equipment than you do at your home. It is a difference in environments, but both can produce good results, I believe." Trini took a drink of her milk and nodded to the boy. "No, there are not, from what I have seen. The location we are in is not in the best of shape, this hotel being the exception."
She took another bite of her sandwich and smiled at the boy's question. "A spotter is mostly used in weight training. Where I come from, we often use heavy iron bars and plates to build strength by doing different exercises. A spotter will stand in a particular position, depending on the exercise, and be there in case the lifter's strength gives out and would otherwise drop the weight onto themselves, causing injury."
She paused, thinking for a moment. "For example, there is an exercise called the bench press, which is similar in form to a push-up, except you are lying on your back and you are lifting a heavy weight straight up and down. If I was doing this exercise and you were spotting me, you would stand behind me. If it looked as though I was not going to be able to complete a lift, you would help me finish the lift and put the bar up to the rack so that I did not drop it on top of myself. Does that clarify the role? Obviously the role is different for each exercise, but that is the basic idea behind them."
She took another bite of her sandwich. "So, when would you like to get started?" she asked. "I do not know when you usually train."
