RP: Learning Magic, Making Magic
Characters: Magius and Open
Time/Date: Noon, 10/04
Location: pool area on the roof
Warnings/Rating: tbd
Summary: Magius has some ideas, and tries them out after going swimming. Magic almost happens.
Status: Ongoing.

Magius rose from the pool, stretching and smiling as he pulled himself to a standing position next to the pool. Water cascaded down his body as he rose, and illuminated scars and muscles. he was in very good shape, unlike most wizards he knew, for he had been an outsider and a renegade most of his life, a warrior and a wizard who did not slink from hidden place to hidden place, but dove into dungeons and confronted dangers.

He stretched, and felt the delightful pull of muscles well used and content as he wound down from the swim. He had not always liked swimming, but since coming here, he had developed a true like of it. He took up a towel and scrubbed his face and body until he was roughly dry, then slipped into his robes and went to where he had set up his things, not too far away.

Settling down, he let the contentment of his swim wash over him, and he closed his eyes, magic flowing around him and easily graspable. He reached out for it, and held it in his mind’s hand as he opened his eyes and looked at his notes. He had decided to try a variation of the wind wall spell and direct it with water instead. He had known of such a spell before, but had lost it with some of his spell books. Now, after weeks of preparation, he was ready to try a new one..

He concentrated on the water, pulling in his will and speaking the words of the modified spell, and letting the magic loose. His eyes fixed on the water as he finished the incantation and looked for results. The water of the pool rose up in a vague wall form, rising some ten feet high, but almost immediately broke apart and splashed back into the pool. He sighed and frowned, making notes and observations. Not what he had planned, but still, closer than he had hoped for a first time spell. He felt there was a large gap to go, and the end result was far more elusive than he hoped it would be. He might not be able to duplicate these spells, but he would try.

He sipped some water and pondered it, thinking on what he would alter next...

Trini had been messing with her morpher for the better part of the day, trying to figure out why it wasn't working. However, perhaps her brain just wasn't as good as Billy's at this level of technical problems, but she hadn't any luck. So, the teenager decided she needed the equivalent of a study break and check out the gym or the pool. She hadn't met anyone else here yet, so she really had no idea what she would find.

The young woman was carrying a small yellow bag and was dressed in a yellow tank top and pair of gray gym shorts. She had figured that she'd rather go to the gym, but wanted to at least see the pool. As she approached, she noticed the older man and turned to approach him casually.

"Hello there," the teenager said to him. "Pardon my curiosity, as I'm a new resident here, so to speak, and haven't met anybody yet. How is the pool?" She had not seen the display of magic, so she didn't know that the man had just been practicing magic. She stopped her approach about ten or so feet from the man and glanced back at the pool before turning to him. "I'm Trini, by the way." If she was going to be stuck here for a little bit, she had decided that the best way to not be stuck here for long was to first find out who else had been checked into this hotel.

Magius turned and stretched before listening to the young woman, and smiling. Ah, a newcomer. There was always both a good and bad feeling about this, as a new face was welcome, and yet no one wanted to wish this fate on anyone else.

He studied her, noting the yellow theme and wondering if it were something along the lines of his own all white attire, and part of a religion or craft. He smiled, listening.

"Greetings, milady. The pool is nice. The water tends to be particularly inviting, especially now, before the season turns quite too cold to think about swimming. I enjoy coming up here and studying, and taking a dip now and then."

He rose and offered his hand, bowing slightly. "I am Magius the White, from Krynn, Welcome to our strange abode. It is a pleasure to meet you, Trini." He had truly not grown used to this informal way of addressing everyone, but was attempting it anyway, as such behooved his path.

So the seasons stayed mostly the same. Trini was glad of that, though where she was from, cold started at a much higher temperature than it did in most parts of the world. "Thank you, Magius the White". She took the man's hand confidently and shook it. The girl used the man's full title, since that was how he introduced himself. She noticed the way that he spoke was rather formal and used some older words, and combined with the robes, she had already begun forming some theories.

"I am afraid that I am not familiar with Krynn, however. Where is that?" she asked as she let go of Magius' hand. "I am from Angel Grove, and I must admit I was surprised that I ended up here. This is not really the way that I envisioned ever being kidnapped. Our kidnappers seem to have some interest in our comfort, from what I can see." That was still bothering her. "I do not suppose I could impose upon your time here at the pool a bit further? I am rather unfamiliar with why we have been brought here in this manner as well as to what manner of hosts have brought us here."

Magius hoped they did, despite not truly knowing, yet. after the handshake, he settled down again, waving a hand at the closest chair. "Join me, if you will, milady."

"It is a world contained with the Aotian Crystal Sphere, and far, I suspect, separated from this world and it's demesnes. It is the dominion of the Aotian pantheon." He peered at her, then nodded. "I assume that is on Earth? Most of those here are from Earth, I have seen. And almost none seem to be used to kidnapping, which, I think, is a good thing."

It would be an odd thing to be used to it, Magius thought.

"They do clothe this prison in comfort, at least in a strained way, but there is also danger. Within the time I have been here, we have had a host of small assaults by various effects, as well as attacks by two different forces, one which attempted to steal our lives, and the latest which attempted to steal our souls."

He smiled to her. "I welcome company, and am more than willing to share what small ideas I have."

"Another dimension then," Trini replied as she took a seat on the chair that Magius had gestured to. "That would mean whoever kidnapped us is capable of reaching between worlds." The idea of alternate dimensions wasn't exactly alien to Trini. She had run into a few such instances in her time as a Power Ranger. "It is on Earth, yes. And agreed, I'm glad most are unused to kidnapping." She paused for a moment. "So, if I can ask, what is it you do on your world? What sort of position do you hold?" It was a chance to learn about another dimension, and Trini was a little bit curious about it.

The teen nodded at the man's explanation of comfort. "So they are observing us under distress then. What sort of effects?" The woman raised both her eyebrows at the man's mention of an attack to steal their souls. That was a new one. Physical attacks she knew she could deal with, but attacks against the soul? How did someone fight that? "Soul theft? It sounds as though the kidnappers do not mess around. How long have you been here?"

Magius nodded. "So it seems." He sighed. They seem quite powerful. They summoned not only us, but all sorts of beings, dangerous ones, who have threatened us." He settled back, thinking. "It seems to be an experiment of a grand scale, but I am not sure what it proves."

He chuckled. "I am a Wizard of High Wizardry of the Order of White Robes, and I practice magic, under the rules given to us by Palpatine, Mishakal, and Solinari, our Gods."

He raised an eyebrow to her. "And what do you do, back on Earth?" He was curious in his turn, wondering what would this one do?

"They've used scents, sounds, and even sights to disorient us. It is said that there have been more experiments, but I have been here but a few months. The earliest one of us I know of is Lily, who is our de facto leader."

"I am afraid I don't do anything quite so impressive as that," Trini responded after the man had explained just what he did back at his home. "I am a student where I come from. I practice martial arts, which is a form of hand to hand combat, and I know about technology. I can't do any sort of magic like what you reference, though I have a friend who is rather good at sleight of hand tricks." She knew enough not to call that real magic. "What type of magic do you do, if I can ask?"

She shifted slightly in her chair as she watched the man, taking in the information he provided. "Lily is the leader of the group? About how many are here in this group? I have not met anyone else so I do not have any idea as to the scale of this operation. The halls were actually rather empty on my way up here." She had no idea if that was strange or not, but she had not run into anyone else so far.

He listened, nodding. It sounded like one of the monk orders back home, always teaching fighting as much as peace. "It sounds like an interesting life."

He considered her question, then smiled. "I do spells, magical incantations that produce magical effects." He whispered a word that flowed away, and little balls of lights, kin various colors, dissolved in from nowhere, dancing around them, gentle, serene, and beautiful.

"She is as much leader as we have. We have never... chosen one, per se."

He grinned a little. "I think we have somewhere between 20 and 30, actually. Of all ages and kinds." He chuckled. "Including a talking dog, a talking cat, and more."

Trini watched the display of magic, her eyes widening as the balls of light danced around. They reminded her of fireworks, except with less explosion and much more close up. "Quite impressive." That was certainly far different from anything she could do.

"It can be an interesting life, though there are days even I don't want to do my math homework." Even Trini got a little tired of studying and homework on some days. She was a teenager, so it was only natural.

"A talking dog and cat? I suppose if we're pulling from other universes, that makes sense, though I'll be sure not to utter anything about hairballs offhandedly." Just in case there was an offendable animal around. "And it is good to know who is in charge, thank you. So, and forgive me if I am going to quickly in my questions, have there been any escape attempts yet, and what has been tried?" She did not want to accept that she was simply stuck at the island.

He dismissed the dancing lights spell with a word and a flick of his fingers, then nodded to her. "It's a spell that is easy to use and learn, though few bother. Most people underestimate the use of something easy to do and remember."

He chuckled. "You were studying at a learning place?" He knew of Universities in Krynn, though small, and of the Towers of course.

He nodded to her. "That seems wise. I think everyone here, or just about everyone, is from a different place and possibly time. Those who keep us here seem to be scientists, and seem to be trying to perform some sort of experiments on us."

He settled back. "I have heard first had tales of several who have tried, mostly by crossing the lines, but no one has succeeded. And several of the more aggressive people who came here have vanished, sometimes just after making threats toward our captors."

He rubbed his chin, then looked at her. "I would advise extreme caution, and extreme care. If you conceive of a way out, be very careful who you mention it to, and where. It may be that those who watch us can hear and see everything in this place."

"Most people dismiss something that is easy as something that is useless. But there are a lot of basic movements and strikes in martial arts that are consistently useful. I imagine it is much the same thing". She paused and smiled. "Though where I come from, magic is not exactly common, so it is still quite impressive to me."

A nod was given when Magius asked about the studying. "Where I come from, everyone under the age of eighteen studies at a learning institution called a school. Once you graduated high school, which is the final of the required schools, you can choose to go on to University for a more specialized degree that takes between two and ten years, depending on how far you take it and what you decide to study."

"I agree on all of that. I do not think aggressiveness would make any sense, and it is fair to assume that if we are part of an experiment, we are constantly being watched. In fact, I have been assuming we have been watched this entire conversation. If our kidnappers are scientists of a nature, then they would have to monitor their experiment. It is the nature of the thing." It didn't mean Trini liked it very much.

"So, you have been here awhile. What is the island like, and the rest of the hotel? This is around the most I have seen so far."

He nodded. He smiled to her as he listened. "Anything new and different, which is effective, can be impressive, but thank you. Skill of arms impresses me, as I know it takes some great practice to do and maintain.

He listened more. She was an interesting person, in truth. "Intriguing. We had no formalized schooling of such, except for wizards or those who would be priests." He chuckled. "It sounds like an interesting and good way to spend one's youth."

He grinned a little at her questions. Her curiosity matched her beauty and made him think even more highly of her. The hotel is slowly becoming a fortress, rebuilt and refurnished in places after attacks, slowly taking on character from those who live here. Down below, in the lobby, is a library and a kitchen area, as well as a gathering place for watching some of the Earth videos that are here."

He rubbed his chin, thinking. "The island seems mostly quiet, save when an experiment is occurring, and then there is much happening. From here to the white line, there are mostly run down shacks and ground, the ruins of a once big city, perhaps. There is something called a mall, which contains clothing and a few other items, and something called a convenience store, which is where the food comes from. it is restocked, though we never see those who do it. Otherwise, it is almost completely ruins and emptiness."

"Anything worth doing well takes time to practice. I am sure you've practiced quite a bit to be able to work the magic that you do." Trini turned to look out at the pool briefly while she thought about what the man said, though a laugh did escape her when he talked about it being a good way to spend a person's youth. "There are some students who would strongly disagree with that. They'd rather never have to go to school. But that is mostly youth talking."

She shifted her foot a little bit before speaking next. "Earth videos then? That in itself is interesting. I am glad they have provided us with the means to cook for ourselves. I would not want to forage too much if at all possible." That would, in truth, just be annoying.

"Ruins of a city? Somewhere that had been attacked maybe? And yes, a mall would have things like that. On Earth, malls are effectively large centers of commerce, filled with individual stores that sell specific things. A convenience store is similar in function, but sells food as well and is usually smaller." It certainly sounded like she was at least somewhere on Earth.

He nodded, chuckling. "To proceed as far as I have has taken decades, though this place and the people in charge of it have stolen much of my power."

He smiled a little. "Some should not. there is a need for those who wage war on the front lines, those who build things, and those who walk the contemplative path. Not all are born to be scholars."

He nodded. "There are some here, as well as many Earth books, and a very small number from other places, I think." He rubbed one ear as he thought, then shook his head. "We don't have to forage in truth, but I do not trust it. I would try to lay in food, but there is no place to do so where they could not remove it."

"More like a town, but yes. We don't know, exactly, what happened here. Either way, those two buildings are the only two remotely fully intact here." He nodded to her. "It may well be some place on Earth or a related world, though from some of what i have learned, it might not be the Earth you know."

Trini frowned at the man's explanation of his loss of power. "I'm sorry to hear that they've managed to strip away some of your ability to use your magic. That must be frustrating. I did not realize they had the ability to take away skill a person had acquired." Trini would explain her own loss, but she had been conditioned since receiving her powers that she should avoid revealing her identity. She was not sure how long that would last here, and since it seemed to be an alternate reality, she was not sure it was necessary to continue doing so. But for now, it seemed the best course of action.

"I do not know if I trust it either, but if they have as much power as it seems that they do, then they could kill us out of hand. It would be a waste of their time to kidnap us just to kill us with some poisoned meals." It just did not make any sense to the teenager. "I am getting that impression. The world that I know did not have your land, for example, and if that is the case, I wonder if there are ways to tell the different members apart in terms of what dimension they come from." It was a curious idea. "I am afraid I have been rather inquisitive though. I hope all my questions have not been too troublesome."

He smiled wryly. "They can do much more than that. Somehow they can inhibit abilities, and mayhap more." He canted his head. "I think they are, frankly, afraid of what we will do otherwise."

"They seem to be testing us, and our reactions, from loud music to attackers to depression soul stealing monsters." He did not like what they did, for it showed cowardice and a very basic violation of their lives.

He nodded. "You might be able to discover such. It might be a fair project to pass the time." He chuckled. "Indeed, not. I think you've been most curious, and that is not a hardship, but impressive."

"I imagine that they would want to make sure they remained safe, yes." Trini couldn't blame them for that, even if she didn't like it. She knows that she'd be sorely tempted to call in her Dinozard if she could. That, of course, was something she could not do here.

"It sounds like a psychological test then to me. Using us as test subjects." She did not like it either, but she did not have the firsthand experience of what their captors did either.

"Thank you. I hoped that you hadn't heard these same questions by new people enough that it was tiresome to answer. Though I believe I should actually go check out the gym. It is a lot to think about, and the exercise will help me focus. You are welcome to join me if you wish." The teen had noticed that the older man looked to be in pretty good shape, so she thought that she would extend the invitation. "Oh, and before I forget, may I ask what room are you in, just in case? I am in 510."

He nodded. "More than likely. See how these people do under these circumstances. A few of the gods on my world were like that." They had been even worse, in truth. Evil gods did love to play with the races.

He smiled at her, welcoming her questions. "In truth, I rarely play the welcome committee. There are a couple of people here who do it most often, with much success. Today, however, I am more than happy to assist someone as pretty and polite as you."

The teen raised her eyebrows briefly at the mention of gods. "Gods? As in multiple gods? That is certainly a difference between our worlds. We have different religious beliefs among our people, but we do not generally see any sort of direct divine intervention. We take our religious beliefs, by and large, on faith rather than directly witnessing their influence."

Trini smiled at that. "I am glad then, that you have had the opportunity to play the role, and you have done it well. Though I am afraid you did not answer my question about if you wished to join me."

"My world has more than a hundred gods, but 22 in the pantheon that I follow. And our gods regularly interfere with our lives. Currently a war is ongoing there between the forces of Good and the actions of a single goddess and her followers." He truly hated Takhisis and the dark gods, for they dd not even respect magic, but sought dominion over all.

He blushed slightly, unused to compliments of any kind. "My thanks. And I did overlook that thought in the others. I'm in room 404, and I would join you, but I think i am ill-dressed for such. Perhaps another time?"

he rose and bowed to her.

"That is a lot of gods. I must admit, most of our world would balk at such a number. And that does seem like it could get difficult to deal with, depending on how powerful the gods are." Trini is not quite sure how one would handle dealing with gods. Carefully, she supposed.

"Do not worry about it. I do have a few more moments though, if you do. I do imagine that robes do not make for the best workout attire, no. It would be easy for them to get caught on a weight or in a machine." Trini smiled casually at the man. "So there is a war between a single goddess and those who follow Good? How can one goddess have amassed enough power to be that much of a threat, if I can ask? You have a lot of gods and goddesses to spread that power around between, do you not?"

"Few directly worship every single one. Each god has unto themselves a demesnes, an area they control, and each is seen and worshiped most by those who are in that area. I, myself most worship Paladine, Mishakal, and Solinari, the foremost gods of Light."

He grinned at her. "The gods follow an ancient pact, to interfere but without coming to the world. Her presence on Krynn grants her more influence and she broke the pact some time ago. While the others hold to the truth, the one God has amassed influence in secret, as befits a dark goddess. She will be defeated, but it will take time and death to do it."

"So she broke the agreement and came to the world, and that grants her more power? Sounds to me like she does not have a lot of honor, if she needs to advance her goals by breaking ancient pacts between gods and goddesses." Trini frowned at that. That did not seem fair to her. "I hope you are able to defeat her soon, but in any sort of war, there is always a high cost."

She did take note of the gods that Magius listed. "So, if they are all gods of light, what makes them different from each other, aside from the different demesnes that they control? Do they have the same or similar philosophies?"

He nodded. She is a goddess of Evil, leader of all Evil forces upon my world. Our world will survive and find a way out of the darkness, but it will take time."

He grinned. "Palpatine is lord of light, ruler of Good's forces, and patron of hope, right, and rulers. Mishakal is his Lady, and queen of charity, magic, and healing. Solinari is the god of Good magic, one of three brothers who watch the world from the night sky. He is the patron of my order, the White Robes."

"So complementary then." Trini nodded to the older man as he explained what his god were like. "I hope your land is able to find a way out of it's troubles soon. And I hope that you will be able to join your friends in defeating that goddess."

The young woman stood and looked over her shoulder briefly before she turned back to the man. "Though I should get moving, I believe. Thank you for your time. I hope I will run into you later." The young woman gave a respectful bow to the man. It seemed the thing to do, since he had offered one to her earlier.
