RP: Awakenings
Characters: David Banner and Jayne
Time/Date: Midnight, 10/01-10/02
Location: Near the mall...
Warnings/Rating: Nudity, cursing, mentions of violence/pg-13
Summary: David wakes up, and tries to find something to wear. He encounters Jayne, for an odd conversation.
Status: Complete

David woke slowly to sunlight stabbing through his eyelids. He woke refreshed and full of energy, as he rarely did, and knew, from that alone, that he had become the Monster. “Damn it! Even here?” The Hulk had been free again. He looked around himself, seeing that he was laid out in the ruins of a building, one that had been thoroughly trashed. Or Hulked, perhaps. He groaned as he got up carefully, and saw that, as usual, he was naked.

“No matter what I do, or where I go, the Monster keeps making life worse. Of all the things I have to deal with, this one is... damn it!” He forced himself to regain control, and slowed his breathing. He would not summon the monster after losing it so recently. He wondered how long he had been lost. One thing he knew, he was not so lost or depressed now. Those things must be gone.

He wasn’t sure where he was in the town, but he knew there was a mall that he could find, once he knew what street he was on. he carefully made his way outside, keeping to the darkest areas, seeing it was midnight and soon knowing what time it was. It had to be close to midnight, the way the sky looked.

He rubbed his face, oriented himself, and started for the mall, slinking from shadows to shadows, every sense alert to whatever might appear. Or whoever. He did not want to have to explain this.

Jayne was attempting to figure out what to do. When the music had stopped, he'd taken a nap. He'd slept all through dinner, and now was wide awake and kind of bored. He was enjoying the quiet though, and thought he'd have a stroll outside to check out the mall in the hopes he could find some ammo. He doubted he'd be able to, and he'd bitched to just about anyone who'd listen about how pointless it was to have guns but no ammo ... but he never stopped hoping to find some.

He thought about hitting up Jaime to save himself a trip, but she was probably busy with Mal (disturbing as those thoughts were) and anyway, it was late. Everyone was probably sleeping.

Having given most of the stores in the mall a look-through and finding nothing obviously new or ammo-shaped, Jayne had given up and headed outside. He was standing by the main entrance trying to decide if he wanted to head back in and try to sleep (or maybe see if anyone was up on the roof; maybe Faye wasn't sleeping right now either), when he realized he wasn't alone outside.

He reached for his gun out of habit, cursing inwardly when he recalled it wouldn't do him any good, and instead he searched the darkness with his eyes. "Someone there?" he called out.

David froze, swearing silently. Of course, tonight of all nights, someone would be here. He breathed and then nodded. Ah well, best to get it over with. He edged forward, and popped his head out from around the wall he was half propped against. "Yes, ah, hello. Sorry to have startled you."

He eyed the man, squinting in the lights. "I think I lost some time, maybe even a day or two. I ended up out here. I was just going to check into the mall and find something to wear."

Find ... something ... to wear.

"Are you nekkid?" Jayne asked, all set to turn his head away or ... offer to go get the guy a robe or something. If he'd been a thinking man, he would have followed the obvious logic and concluded the answer to that question himself. Unfortunately, Jayne wasn't much for thinking.

"I ... uh. Can run in an' get you somethin', right quick," Jayne offered, having very little desire to be anywhere near a naked man.

David felt his face burning as he nodded. "Ah, yes. I'm afraid to say I am. And that would be very nice of you. I just need something to get me back to the hotel without embarrassing myself or others."

Mostly himself, he was sure. He was a man of years and not exactly heartthrob material.

He swallowed. "Anything you could find would be good, thanks."

Jayne nodded, all too content to remove himself from the proximity. Halfway to the clothes store he realized that in order to pass off the clothing to the man, he'd have to get close enough to reach it out toward him.

For half a second, he thought about tossing whatever he found toward the guy, but ... he really didn't want to see the guy jump to catch it. It was bad enough he'd ever had to see Mal's junk that one time ...

Shuddering at the thoughts, Jayne hurried along to the nearest clothes store. he fetched a large robe that he thought should at least cover the essentials and would be easy enough to hand off.

Heading back out, he scuffed his feet loudly to ensure the guy heard him coming. With the robe extended out in front of him, he turned his eyes away as he moved close enough to hand off the robe. "How come you're wanderin' out here nekkid anyway?" He asked as if it were somehow any of his business at all.

David waited, a little cold, and worried the man would just vanish, but hoping he would come back. red touched his cheeks, for this made him feel as if he had somehow messed up. Which, in the end, he supposed was true.

This was all because of his arrogance and impatience all those years ago.

He heard the steps coming closer and hunched behind the wall, peering out. He grabbed the robe as soon as it was close enough and ducked back behind the wall, speaking as he slipped it on.

"I don't know. Last I remember it was Friday night and the Dementor things were swarming everywhere, and I was, well, I wasn't exactly having a good time." He belted the robe and breathed a little easier, stepping out from the wall.

"Thank you. At least this way, I can get back to the hotel and get dressed normally."

"You get drunk or somethin'?" he pressed, not sure why he couldn't just let it go. Maybe because he thought -- somehow -- Saffron was behind it. Maybe because the only other time he'd seen a nekkid guy was ... well. Yeah. He'd rather hear that the guy had gotten completely shit-faced than hear that he'd somehow been forced down to his birthday suit.

He glanced over as the guy stepped out, though cautiously. Upon seeing that he actually was dressed, Jayne relaxed a little.

Then he wondered why he hadn't thought to get drunk while the dementors were swarming around and making people break mirrors to try to kill themselves. He tended to forget things too, when he got drunk. After he passed out.

"Maybe. I had some alcohol in the room, but... I-- I honestly don't know. Whatever happened, I was fine and unharmed when I woke up a little ways away about an hour ago."

He didn't want to go on any further and glanced around. "What drove you out at this hour? Not that I'm objecting, since you've been of help."

"Huh." Jayne shrugged. Wasn't his business, so it was best not to pry, right? Even if he was kinda nosy now. What else would get a guy all blacked out ...

... unless it was part of the experiments?

He frowned a little at the idea of that and thought maybe later he'd suggest it around as a possibility to some people.

"I had a very, very long nap earlier, and I am very awake right now. Thought I'd come out here t'see if maybe they left us some ammo in any of the stores or anythin'. No luck." It was perhaps a dull story, but it was the true story.

David rubbed his face, and then nodded, listening. "Ammo? Hm. Sometimes, I think the scientists in charge here are having fun watching us chase around. If I was them, I'd hide ammo somewhere where no one here could think of it, but still somewhere around, just to be a jerk."

He glanced off toward the hotel. "Listen, I think I'm going to head back, try to get some real clothing on, maybe eat. Are you staying out, or come back in?" He wasn't adverse to talking more as they walked, but he wouldn't object if the man wanted to keep his search going.

Jayne shook his head. "Wouldn't work. Cap'n's girl c'n find things," he pointed out. The fact that Jaime might not have wanted her ability broadcast to God and everyone really played no part in Jayne's train of thought. He was simply reiterating facts. Jaime could find things, which meant Jaime could find ammunition if there was any to be found.

"Stayin' out, I think," Jayne decided. Maybe now he'd go peeking around in unlikely places, just because the idea was there. At least until he could get ahold of Jaime again to see if she'd go looking for him. "Glad I could ... help y'out," he said with a curt nod.

David opened his mouth, then closed it. "Huhn. Seems like a lot of people here who have strange abilities." A thought occurred to him. "Who's the Captain?" This might be good to know.

"Okay. Thanks, again. I'll remember." He started away, then stopped. "I'm Doctor David Banner. Good hunting." He turned to go again. This evening had been weird, and he looked forward to a hot bath and food. He was suddenly very hungry.

"Mal Reynolds." Jayne grinned. "The one who lost some toes to reavers." Because that was pretty much the highlight of that particular fiasco. Not so much that the captain had gotten hurt, but the fact that he'd lost toes. "He's ... he ain't nothin' more'n a captive here, but back home he was the captain of our ship."

He thought about clarifying he meant space ship before deciding it was pretty much irrelevant.

"Jayne Cobb," he introduced himself, wondering a little how they'd managed to save the introductions 'til the end, but he wasn't exactly up to par in the manners department.

When the doctor turned to head out, Jayne angled himself in the other direction to resume his ammunition hunt. Maybe by the time he'd hit the other stores he'd be ready for a proper sleep.
