"No," she protested as she tried to pull away. They couldn't take her inside, because then they wouldn't let her back out. "Daddy, no. I can ... I can do this. I'm fine," she lied, lied, lied.
But she wasn't going to be the first one to crack. Not her. Nevermind that two people had already seen her crumpled on the ground sobbing. That ... didn't count, somehow.
"I just ... need some chocolate and then I can come back out," she wheedled.
"It wasn't ... my monkey," Dave said. "I just borrowed it from her? I can't really make my own ..." Though Balthazar had his own, somehow, and that was just grossly unfair.
He also very maturely managed to refrain from pointing out that they sold pills to make a person's monkey stronger, because that was just inappropriate.
Even when Lily tried to pull away, he held onto her. She didn't ... exactly seem that steady to him, and while he wasn't anyone in charge or anything like that, he didn't think he would let her back out where it would probably just happen all over again.
