Unfortunately, he had to start with the lizard hearts. It was delicate work, to be sure, and the last thing he needed right now was to damage one of the vessels, or even to cut himself. While he could heal the cut, so that his fingers wouldn't be out of commission, he didn't want to contaminate the potion with any of his own blood. And that meant -- even if his every instinct railed against such a thing -- he'd had to leave the door to his room open. He couldn't risk jumping at all, if Lily happened to knock.
This was going to be exceedingly difficult, but between the two of them, they ought to be able to get it all done. Though he hadn't had anyone assist him with any brewing at all since his own school days. (And even then, if it hadn't been Lily, it would have been under protest.) He'd become an expert at dancing about his preparation room at his apothecary, first, and then his office at Hogwarts, with several cauldrons going at once, but those had been fairly forgiving brews. Wolfsbane ... was different.
He hadn't wanted any distractions whilst making this potion, even if he didn't have that luxury this time. Nor did he have the luxury of time, itself. Severus stopped cutting when he heard a noise in the corridor and held his breath. Then he resumed a second later. The lamp on his desk wasn't the best for this work, but that couldn't be helped. He only wished he'd had the time and ingredients to brew a bit of Felix Felicis, first. That wasn't a crutch he used all that often, but this time, it would have come in particularly handy.
