"How's it look?" Matt inquired, managing to tear his eyes away from the monitor long enough to glance very briefly to Sam.
"Good, so far. Their magic's up, set the urgent option for the posts, disabled the traps because hey, it's not like they can go anywhere, right?" Sam shifted the view of a couple of the outdoor cameras so she could watch the portal they'd set up. "How do we think they're going to go?" she inquired with a nod toward the monitor displaying the portal.
"They'll be confused, cranky. I'm hoping they stake out places for ambushes, and do so if people start patrolling."
"If we get any smart ones," she quipped.
Matt shrugged. "We'll see. Either they'll bash themselves bloody trying to get into the hotel, break down the wards, or ... wait for their prey to take a walk." He, personally, was hoping to see a few get into the hotel, but putting any in there was violating the parameters of the experiment. They'd erected their defenses; it was cheating for him to circumvent them simply because he could. The experiment had to have some integrity after all.
"I"m going to put up an ask us anything after this is over," he declared, stiffing his laugh with the back of one hand.
"They never write back when I post anything," Sam said.
"I had a couple write back to me, a few weeks back." He looked thoughtful. "I think most of them are dead now, though."
"Speaking of," Sam replied as she flipped the monitor to a multi-screen view so she could watch the key rooms as well as the front of the hotel. "You realize we killed off the only person who can make the potion to control the werewolf, right?"
"I realize," Matt said, a slow grin creeping across his lips.
"So you're going to ...?"
"Nothing. We'll see how it goes. Maybe he'll get along with the psychopath and they can run around together."
"The psychopath," she repeated. "You got permission?"
"We have to take his knife and gun, but yeah. I got permission."
"You're a sadist," Sam muttered.
"You say that like it's news," Matt quipped before he shifted to get a better view of the monitors around his station. The show was about to start. He focused on the portal and clapped when the first reaver stumbled through. His eyes sought out River on the monitors, and he watched her reaction before he slipped his attention back to the portal. "Three ... four ... and five. Here we go!"
