RP: Safe in my Room
Characters: Jaime (presumably Dug), Kyle, Bella, Edward, Kaylee
Time/Date: Afternoon, August 17
Location: 318
Warnings/Rating: Her mouth
Summary: Jaime worries
Status: Complete

After Jaime posted the announcement on the network, she sank back onto her bed, back braced against some pillows. She felt sick, and nervous, and scared. While she wondered if some of it was just ... because of all the hype and worrying everyone had done with this, she recognized it was a serious situation. And that for the duration of it, she was very likely going to be stuck in her room, with a lot of people.

She'd done her best to load the place up with activities. They had a few board games, a couple decks of cards, some books, and of course the laptop could play TV shows. She wondered if the psychotic bastards keeping them captive would make the TV just play Barney and Teletubbies and stuff like that, and she thought ... she might not even notice if they did.

Her thoughts were focused in pretty much one direction, after all. She wished she hadn't said anything to him at all, but if she hadn't, they might all be sitting ducks. Hell, maybe they still were, despite all the precautions.

She was distracted by a noise, and glanced over to the door. "Hey, Kyle," she said softly, pleased that her voice didn't shake too much. She was going to be a wreck until the reavers were gone. She knew it. And if Mal died --

She wasn't even going to think about that.

"Can I come in?"

Jaime offered him a little smile. "That's what the room's here for," she told him. Hers, and Kaylee's, since they were across the hall and both ... squishy. They had no weapons training. They had no special powers - related to combat, anyway. They were just people. She wondered how many others were going to come in today. And how many were going to stay. She was going to guess that Kyle was a stay-over, since he had his pillow and a backpack. She didn't mind. Not really. They could set up camp on the floor, or she supposed she could share her bed with someone for a bit. She shared it with Dug; why not another person?

She did think about asking Mal to sleep here with his gun, but ... she didn't think she'd be able to behave if he did.

Reaching over to her laptop, Jaime navigated to a music website so at least the room wasn't silent. And then ... she waited.

He'd been toying with the idea for several hours, really, to the point where he knew that if their abilities had been intact, he'd have been able to watch the scenarios play out several hundred thousand times in Alice's visions, until she snapped and told him to just make up his mind before she made it up for him. The problem was that he didn't know if he and Bella were at that stage of their - could he call it a friendship? the fact that he didn't know the answer to that question sent a familiar sharp pain running through him - relationship where he could insist on her safety. And he wasn't sure if she'd be... comfortable enough to go up to the safe rooms on her own, or if she'd risk it and take her chances in her own room where she'd be more comfortable, trusting the in safety of this... magic that so many of the residents seemed to posses (if the glimpses of minds that he got here and there were any indication) to keep the hotel safe.

Honestly, his train of thought was taking him in circles, but it all came down to the safety of his beloved. So, after angsting about it for some time, he finally worked up the nerve to go locate Bella, and suggest, in what he hoped was a purely innocent indifferent way, but likely came off somewhat pained - (she could die, at any moment) - that she seek shelter in one of the designated safe rooms, just for a bit, until they could be sure of what they were getting into. He even offered to stay with her there for a bit, until she got more comfortable, figuring they could always use someone with a bit of combat experience in the safe room, just in case something went wrong. He may not be as strong as he once was, but that didn't mean he didn't still have all the training that he'd gone through over the last century.

Determined to get her to safety by any means that he had at his disposal, Edward headed off to find Bella.

Meanwhile, Dug was not really liking his captivity, which was likely an odd thing for the others present. It wasn't the room - he had spent endless hours before not leaving the room unless it became necessary. But the sudden knowledge that he wasn't allowed to leave the room had left him quite agitated, and he wasn't really sure why.

He trotted immediately over to Kyle when he entered, sniffing at him lightly and greeting him with no short amount of enthusiasm, settling in at his feet when he sat down with no regard for what he was sitting down on top of. He did not like the Bad Feelings that this adventure was causing everyone, and really would very much like it to be over now.

He whined softly to indicate this to the rest of the group.

"Hello, Dug," Kyle greeted him with a very small smile. "Will you share your floor with me?" he inquired, though he did shoot a glance to the bed. He just wasn't sure what the protocol was about sharing beds with people you weren't that close to. Nor did he know if Jaime already had plans to share the bed with someone else, and he didn't mind sleeping on the floor. It wasn't as though he hadn't done it before.

He turned his attention to Jaime. "Will there be many people here?"

Jaime shook her head and shrugged. "I don't know. I guess. There're a lot of people here, and ... well, we've only got the two rooms." She supposed if it became a thing, they could extend the wards to incorporate the next two rooms, but ... that was even if anything happened.

Bella was kind of inclined to head down to the safe rooms, but she really hadn't gotten to know a lot of people here, so she wasn't really sure about just ... barging in on a bunch of people. So she remained in her own room, perched on the edge of her bed. Arms were crossed over her chest, and she was staring down toward the floor. She wasn't sure what to do.

She didn't really know what was going on. Sure, she read everything that was posted, but she couldn't believe any of it was really real. They couldn't be about to be attacked, but ... apparently they were. People were taking it damn seriously, and per the latest update, it really was all real.

So she sat, and she stared, and she waited, though she had no idea what she was waiting for.

"I do not mind if there are many people," Dug said, nestling in closer to Kyle at the invitation, resting his head on Kyle's lap. "I love people. And while will you be sleeping on the floor, Master Kyle? There is a bed?" he didn't understand the subtleties of human interaction, or realize that he was stepping over any lines with that comment. He slept in Jaime's bed sometimes, humans slept in beds every night. Why did this make a difference?

Hearing the noise and music, Kaylee popped her head into the hall, glancing across it before smiling slightly as she noticed Kyle's arrival. She slyly glanced around for River, wondering if the girl would decide that the safe rooms needed better protection and come to patrol the hallway, thinking herself clever and subtle before easing across.

"We got our first guest," she remarked, offering Kyle a smile. "You holdin' up okay?"

She wasn't. Not really. She was managing to put on a brave face, but she was shaking like a leaf inside. She wanted this whole experience to be over. Reavers. In this tiny little sandbox of a place. It was petrifying for her, and though she kept it mostly out of her face, her eyes definitely showed it.

Rather hoping that Bella would at least have sense enough to stay in her room (or someone else's room, if she'd made a friend or two that she hadn't mentioned (and there was that pang again)) he decided to check there first, hoping that he wasn't going to have to go on a wild goose chase searching for her. He supposed if he really needed to, he could ask Alice to suffer the headache and figure out where she was, or see if he could manage it on his own, but he rather hoped it wouldn't come to that.

He wrapped on the door twice, calling out, "Bella? It's Edward. May I come in?"

He was really fighting back on the urge to just enter anyway, but he was a gentleman first and foremost. He had manners.

Jaime minded if there were people. She wondered if Mal was going to check on her first or just head right out. The idea of him heading out made her almost physically ill, but she couldn't - wouldn't - stop him. He had a gun, and he was one of the few who knew what they were up against. He was an asset outside, not in here holding her hand. She glanced up as Kaylee stepped in, offering her a slight smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "What, no one's invaded your place yet?" she teased a little, but her heart wasn't in it.

"It is Jaime's bed," Kyle said to Dug. "I am not certain she would appreciate me sharing it with her," he continued, glancing slightly to Jaime. "And I am not certain River would appreciate me sharing Jaime's bed." Actually, he was fairly certain that River would both understand it was nothing and be upset at the idea at the very same time. "People do not share beds unless they are friends, lovers, married, or have been invited to do so."

His bright blue eyes shifted to Kaylee, and he smiled brightly at her. "I don't know," he admitted. "Everyone is frightened, and I want to help but have no experience with firearms or fighting, so it was deemed best that I stay here, where it is safe. How are you?"

Edward. She supposed she should have expected him to come find her. Honestly, she couldn't really figure him out, no matter how much time she spent with him and Alice. "It's ..." She rose rather than finish that statement. Drawing open the door, she stepped back so he could come in.

"Hey," she said as she wrapped her arms around herself. "Checking up on me?" She meant it to be playful, but it didn't quite come off that way. It came off with a little more fear in it than she'd meant to project, because yes, she was a little bit terrified. "Or were you ... did you want to stay here with me?"

Kaylee lifted a hand to cover her mouth to hide back the giggle. "Reckon she'd understand," Kaylee offered as her two cents to Kyle. "But it's good of you, t'take her feelin's into account like that." To be honest, she wasn't even sure if River and Kyle were aware of... what sort of relationship they were headed towards, or if they were genuinely going to go about falling in love in the storybook way. She thought it was entirely too cute and sweet for words, really.

She shook her head to Jaime's question about her place getting invaded. She thought that a couple of people had mentioned stopping by - Alice said she'd visit, but Kaylee didn't think she planned to stay - "None yet. Reckon that'll change though, the day wears on," she nodded before turning to Kyle and biting her lip slightly. "Don't much like reavers," she admitted, then patted her side where Mal had helped her holster a gun. "Cap'n said I should have this, but I don't... know much about usin' 'em. I wanna help too, but I get more in'he way than anythin'," she shrugged her shoulders.

Dug had been quiet for a moment, thinking about Kyle's response to his question about sleeping on the bed. He now lifted his head and said, "Mistress Jaime, are we friends, lovers, or married?"

He assumed they had to be one of those things, as he didn't remember being invited onto her bed. He did not notice Kaylee's stifled laughter.

Checking up on her? Yes, actually, that was exactly what he was doing. "Just wondering if you wanted some company," he said, sheepishly, sticking his hands into his pockets to try and look unassuming. "Actually, I was wondering if you wanted to head with me up to the 'safe rooms' or whatever they are?" He had yet to tell Bella he was a vampire - for all she knew, he thought, she would believe that he needed the safe rooms too. "I didn't want to go on my own."

He paused, and then said, "Unless you'd be more comfortable here? I just didn't want to be on my own. Safety in numbers, and all that."

"I always want her to feel good," Kyle said earnestly. It was true. He liked River and cared for her, and he wished he knew what to do and how to help her when she was upset. He wanted her to always be his happy, smiling River.

"Probably," Jaime agreed. She hesitated, parted her lips, then closed her mouth. Kaylee probably wouldn't know where Mal was, or if he planned on stopping by, or ... anything more than she really knew herself. But she was worried about him, and she knew she was a deeper level of worried than she had a right to be. Not that she couldn't worry about her friends - she worried about Lily and Tyler, too - but she worried about Mal in a more intimate way. A way she would be extremely mortified if he ever discovered, because he was twice her age and not interested in her, she was sure.

"It'll be a regular party," she said absently before she glanced to Dug, vaguely aware he'd asked a question. "We're friends, Dug, but ... those rules don't really apply to people and dogs. I could have a dozen dogs sleeping with me at night and it would be fine." It was weird, to have a dog as a friend, but after two months, it was hard to think of him as just a dog. He talked, after all.

Bella nodded slightly. "I was ... thinking about it. I just ... I don't really know many people here, besides you, and ... and Alice and Susan." She lifted her shoulders a little. "If you ... wanted to go, I guess I could go with you," she offered.

If she didn't trust River's judgement of people, she'd have questioned Kyle's sincerity, but she didn't think that River could be fooled even if she wanted to let herself be fooled by anyone. But Kaylee sometimes had trouble believing anyone could be that genuinely sweet and concerned for someone, and she closed her eyes, inwardly wincing at the fact that someone with that much goodness had been brought here to this place of horrors, forced to deal with reavers.

She thought that maybe the whole hotel could use a basic training in self defense, or at the very least an explanation on how to wield a weapon, and she thought that maybe when this was all over - if it ever ended - she might suggest that idea to someone who could do something about it. They shouldn't have to end up in this situation again, with so many people who were unable to defend themselves.

"Wish we'd thought to bring snacks," Kaylee remarked lightly, glancing down the hall as if expecting someone to magically appear with them. Then she thought about that, "Mean, wish I did," she clarified. For all she knew, Jaime or Kyle already had them.

Dug nodded to Jaime's response, though his eyes were scrunched in his 'thinking' face. He wasn't sure he understood. "Why is you sleeping with 12 dogs different from you sleeping with 12 men?"

He closed his eyes briefly in relief. She'd been thinking about it. That made things a whole lot easier, really. "I do think it's for the best. They're supposed to be... sealed off with magic, I suppose, and while it sounds a bit unbelievable... it seems to be the least unbelievable things that happens here. It will probably be the safest place to be, and there will be others there in a similar predicament."

And in the even that the reavers got into the hotel, he would really rather Bella be in a room that had been sealed off with magic than not.

Jaime gestured to her dresser. "Top drawer, there should be some chips or donuts. Poptarts at the very least. I had to start keeping them in there because someone got into them once and sicked up all over the floor." She figured it would be fairly obvious who she meant, but she saw no need to point fingers.

"It's different, Dug, because people are different. People get jealous of other people, but ... not dogs." Granted, most dogs didn't talk so it was a completely moot issue. Maybe if dogs talked, guys would get jealous. She could sort of imagine that conversation: Mistress rubbed my belly and it was very good.

A faint smile tugged the corners of her lips, though it didn't last or touch her eyes. Instead, her thoughts followed a predictable path and wound up at Mal again. "I can ... go on a run. I should probably bring Dug's kibble in here, anyway." Because the fewer times she had to leave the saferoom ... the better.

"Yeah, being here has kind of ..." she made a few motions with her hand, miming a box. "Stretched the boundaries of my idea of reality." If she thought too hard about it ... it was just flat out weird. People with mutations and magic and people who traveled to lands with talking lions ... it was just crazy.

"Are you and Alice going to be staying up there?" She'd feel better if one or both of them would be there, so she'd have company she knew.

Dug ducked his head and whined a bit in embarrassment, and Kaylee grinned and reached down to scratch his ears briefly before she moved further into the room, reaching into the top drawer to pull out a poptart - something to much on, something to do. "Don't know that you should go for a run, on your own, case they do manage t'get in," she said quietly to Jaime's comment, remembering all too well the lectures she'd had to endure from Mal over the last couple of days - she didn't think he was taking to captivity very well.

Though she supposed people were making their way to the safe room on their own, and that couldn't be too much different. "Though, you go fast, probably won't matter much." She was going to make a side comment about how she could send Mal and note and tell him to come get her and take her down to the kitchens to get snack food and Dug's kibble, but she wasn't sure how well that would go over, so she bit her tongue.

"I will be," Edward said. She had alluded to wanting him there and that was enough for him to do just about anything. "I don't... know what Alice is doing," he said vaguely. He'd had to talk her out of going on patrols earlier, remind her that there were not as strong as they had been in their own reality and really didn't know what the reavers would do to them in this state. Were they mortal? Could they die? Could they be healed? There were too many question to risk it, but she'd been in a funny headspace ever since the dreams and was not coping well to being separated from Jasper.

He thought that he was lucky, in that sense, that at least Bella was here so he didn't have to worry about her. And he knew that if he thought too much about that, logic would catch up with him and he would be reminded that
his Bella was still out there in the world somewhere at complete risk to danger... but so long as he didn't think too hard, he was satisfied that she was here and he could protect her.

"She lives just down the hall though," he said quickly. "She'll probably stop in."

Jaime shrugged one shoulder. "I can take the brave guard dog with me," she quipped. She wondered a little what Dug would do, if he was confronted with a reaver. She also wondered how they were going to handle taking him for walks, then figured he could pee in the tub unless they could manage to toilet train him. That was kind of an amusing thought, but ... she really did wonder. Maybe she'd have people with guns scoot him outside the door a couple times a day.

"But ... probably best to go sooner, before they have time to figure out how to get in." She swallowed and felt a little ill. Before they figured out a way in. God. What if they did? Would the wards hold? Would they have reavers banging on magic in front of their doors, unable to actually get to them, but able to be there and effectively trap them? And what if the wards fell? Each thought spiraled somewhere worse and worse, and Jaime shook her head to try to clear her thoughts before she eased off the bed.

"C'mon, Dug. Least you can do is carry your kibble in here, right?"

Bella nodded slightly before she stood up. "Guess we should ..." She made a slight gesture toward the door. The quicker they left, the quicker they'd get there, right? And the better?

On a whim, she reached over and snagged the book she'd been reading, and thought about bringing some clean clothes. After a hesitation, she decided to do that. After all, who knew how long this was going to last, or when it would be safe enough? She at least wanted clean underwear ... though she felt vaguely embarrassed about grabbing it out of her drawers while Edward was right there.

Still ... better a little embarrassed with clean undies, right?

Shoving her nightgown and underwear and a couple of shirts into a bag, she added her book and flashed Edward a smile. "Ready," she announced.
