RP: Good night's sleep his ass
Characters: Jayne, Tink, Luna
Time/Date: Late morning, June 15, 2032
Location: Kitchen, 1st floor
Warnings/Rating: Jayne's mouth?
Summary: Jayne is cranky
Status: Complete-ish

Someone had baked cookies. Chocolate chip and some sort of cinnamon, left with a note that they were free for the taking. He'd snagged a handful and plopped himself down into one of the chairs while he munched his cookies. So, Kaylee was here, River and the Captain were here. He reckoned, by that logic, Zoe and the doc would be showing up soon enough.

Jayne leaned back in the chair, watching and listening and trying to figure out what to do. Thinking had never been his strong suit though, and this situation was no different. He looked for people to point him somewhere, tell him to shoot, to fetch, to lug, whatever, but he wasn't used to being the man with the plan. Thinking after not enough hours of sleep was also not his strong suit.

Brushing the cookie crumbs off his hands, he tapped his fingers on the table before he lifted his gun out of the holster at his side. It wasn't his best gun. It wasn't his favorite gun. It was, however, a gun, and right now, that was good enough for him. He should see about getting more ammo for it; maybe this town had some stocked in some secret location somewhere.

Jayne watched as someone wandered by the entrance to the kitchen, and he openly admired the young redheaded woman until she'd disappeared around the corner. He gave some thought to following her before deciding he was just fine where he was. If he saw Mal or Kaylee though, he'd call some attention to himself.

Meanwhile, he'd stay here, eat cookies, and play with his gun.

Tink was fluttering around the... hotel? Wherever it was that she had currently found herself, leaving a trail of dust in her wake. She'd done a mandatory scope of the upper rooms, but from what she could tell anything higher than the 5th floor was not currently taken. There was a pool on the roof, and she wondered how many people were going to ever know that, given that there was no real need to go past the fifth floor.

Yet, anyway.

She was on fourth, with a flighty, flighty girl who seemed to enjoy staring at her while she moved around, and tended to follow her around as well. She expected the girl would be peeking through the kitchen any moment now, but wanted a moment to survey it for herself. She was mildly started when she saw someone was actually in the kitchen, and made a sort of squeaking noise before she darted out of sight behind something on the counter, peeking out so that she could get a better look.

She knew, somewhere in the back of her mind, that she wasn't as invisible as she would like to be - he'd still see a glowing spot, and hear the sounds of the bells on her heels as she moved - but she felt safe in her hiding spot all the same when she didn't think about that.

Jayne wasn't completely unobservant, even as distracted as he was by what passed for thoughts. Which, right then, consisted of how to get home, and barring that, how to get some trim. He doubted money was going to factor into a place like this, which just left rutting.

He caught the flash of light and absently poked at his ears because he could have sworn he heard bells. Tiny, annoying little bells. Swinging his gaze around, he lifted his brows and tilted his head as he peered toward the glow.

Shifting his attention further, he looked back along what he assumed was a line of light to try to find the source of it - as if he expected someone to be standing there with a flashlight with a tinted lense or something like that.

Seeing nothing - and no one - he returned his attention to the light, squinting. "Someone there?" he asked as he ensured his gun was primed to shoot if need be.

She frowned, a bit nervous and wondering how long it would take Luna to get in here and give her away. She would, too - she really was fascinated by fairies. Tink thought that she could hide well enough that Luna's spacey-ness would just be viewed as that - lord knew she talked about weird things - but that was cruel, so she heaved a sigh and moved out more fully into the open.

"Yes, all right then," she said, her voice high pitched as one could expect, with a ring that sounded like it could have been bells. "I'm here. I... didn't know there was someone going to be in here."

She sulked, crossing her arms in front of her, standing proud at 2 inches off the table, in her green dress and sparkly body. "Well, have a good look then, and a good laugh, but keep those hands where I can see them! I'm not some sort of fly that you can squish!"

"Oh, man," Jayne said with a laugh. This ... this had to be some sort of trick. Whatever those crazy kidnappers were up to with their observations or whatever. He stared at the little ... tiny ... absolutely minuscule ... person? and laughed again.

"So what're you supposed to be?" he drawled as he relaxed his position slightly. "Some sorta ..." he waved one hand, not certain what exactly word he was searching for. Or the concept he was looking for, come to that. Really, he'd never encountered this, or anything like this before. They sure as hell didn't have anything like this where he was from.

Jayne shook his head and wondered if maybe he was seeing things. Did they put something in the water? "Well, what are ya?" he prompted when he couldn't come up with the word on his own.

Fantastic. He was as thickheaded as a pirate. This was going to end well.

"Fairy," she clarified for him. "The wings, outfit and general glow don't give it away?" Yes, all right, so the attitude definitely didn't, but Tinkerbell was hardly the sunshine and rainbows that the other fairies tended to be. She had spent far too much time with annoying boys to be so cheerful anymore.

Though, yes, okay, she could make an effort to be a bit more pleasant.

"Tinkerbell," she muttered, and nearly curtsied before she remembered to stop herself. "I'm Tinkerbell. Please, keep laughing, it's not disrespectful at all."

She would eventually find someone who wasn't awed by her presence or humoured by it, wouldn't she? There had to be someone. She really wished Peter was here.

"Fairy," he repeated, which triggered another bout of snickering. "Fairy," he echoed. Man, he wished Mal was down here to see this. "Bet Kaylee'd get a kick out of you," he said.

Jayne did keep laughing, because he was just that respectful. "Tinkerbell, huh? I'm Jayne. It's ... very amusin' to meet you," he said.

"So how in the hell did they get you? An' why? Can't be much to observe about a flitty little thing like you," he said with the tact and subtlety that he possessed. All of it.

She crossed her tiny arms over her body, and sulked a bit. She nodded her head when he gave his name, but it wasn't as though it was exactly a pleasure to meet him or anything, so she said nothing further. When he asked why they'd brought her here, she shrugged her shoulders. "How should I know? Maybe they brought me here to see how people like yourself would react to me. Though I can't see what's so interesting to observe about you, either, so ha."

Ha. Because she was triumphant that she had managed to insult the moron? She rolled her eyes at herself.

Luna had been exploring with Tink, but they had gotten lost. Luna was fairly sure that the fairy - if that was indeed what she was, as she struck Luna as more of a Shimmering Shylan - was deliberately flying quickly to avoid her, but she didn't mind very much. She was okay with taking her time, and Tinkerbell usually came back a bit later if they got too separated.

Luna was pretty sure she was used to being around people, and got lonely by herself. Also, she would probably find it difficult to get back into the room. They'd already determined she didn't fit through the keyhole. Luna was going to see about speaking to the scientists and getting Tink her own little door installed in the big door, or maybe she would just use magic and see if she could make one herself. She thought she could, but it might be better to ask and be safe than sorry, particularly in this place.

Peeking her head into the kitchen, Luna spotted Tink and noticed Jayne. She smiled brightly, skipping her way into the room. "Hello!" she offered brightly. "I'm so glad you're making friends, Tinkerbell. You should introduce me."

Tink was sulking. She stuck her tongue out at Luna and turned her back, sticking her nose in the air. She was not going to be introducing anyone.

Jayne snorted. "Never said there was anythin' interestin' about me to observe," he pointed out. Honestly, he couldn't see why any of them were worth anyone else's interest at all, but he wasn't a scientist. Or a kidnapper for all that.

Well. Unless there was money in it.

He glanced to the blonde as she skipped in, brows lifting slightly as the girl addressed the fairy. He was going to guess that they knew one another, though he had to grin when the fairy reacted so very politely to the girl.

"Jayne Cobb," he introduced himself to the blonde. "An' I wouldn't exactly say we was makin' friends," he pointed out. "Don't think she likes me much," he added with a grin - because what did he care if some Twinkerbell liked him or not?

"Luna Lovegood," Luna said brightly, nodding her head somewhat absently. "That's okay, Mr. Cobb - I don't think that Tinkerbell likes me very much either. But I think it might just be that she misses her friends back home very much." She nodded again. "It could also be that she is not a fairy at all - she says that she is, but she reminds me very much of the Shimmering Shylan which are quite elusive where I come from."

She paused. "England," she clarified. "I was at a private school in Scotland before being brought here, in my fourth year. Where are you from?"

"Oh for the love of... do we have to make friends with everyone we meet?" Tink grumbled, turning back around and putting her hands on her hips in displeasure.

"I'm only being friendly," Luna told Tinkerbell. She resisted the urge to add that Tinkerbell should try it sometime, because that would be impolite.

"Likely ain't no place you've ever heard of," he mumbled. "'sides, where I started don't much matter. Been livin' on Serenity the past few years, an' that's home enough," he declared.

School. He grinned, but ... yeah, she looked about like a school girl. Kinda pissed him off they were dragging little kids here. Fairies, whatever, but why'd they have to go and mess with kids?

He glanced to the fairy at her protest. "You know, you're 'bout the size an' shape of a really pesky fly. Might want to watch someone don't mistake you for one and put an end to your miserable little existence." Then he wondered if someone could kill a fairy with bug spray or a fly swatter or something, and he ran his hand down his mouth to try to repress his grin.

Tinkerbell shot a scathing look to Jayne, her usual golden glow turning more of a pink colour in her anger. "You wouldn't dare," she accused dangerously, and though her voice dropped to a lower, more dangerous tone for her, it was likely that the others didn't really notice a difference from her normal voice as it didn't really drop significantly to them. "I am not some common insect you can just squash. Besides, like you could catch me."

Luna put a hand over her mouth to stifle the giggles. "She can make people fly, as well," she informed Jayne. "What did you say the intonation was again, Tinkerbell?"

Tink rolled her eyes, faded back to her normal golden colour, and mumbled vaguely incoherently, "Faith...dsghjasjd..."

"Sorry?" Luna frowned as she tried to remember. "Faith, trust, and pixie dust I think," she told Jayne with a smile. "I could fly around our room! It was really quite exhilarating. I felt much like a Smorphle Snarklebat."

"Quit making up words!" Tink muttered before turning back to Jayne almost accusatorily. "Where, or what, exactly, is Serenity?"

"I'd dare an' I reckon I could catch you." If not with his hands, possibly with a bullet ... but he wasn't seriously contemplating shooting the fairy. Not unless she annoyed him more than she already was.

He listened as the two of them had a conversation, and he grinned. "Think I'll be keepin' my feet on the ground, where's they belong," he declared. Though he supposed technically if he was standing anywhere in Serenity his feet weren't on the ground, per se, but they were still solidly planted.

Most of the time. Unless they were about to crash or something.

Jayne glanced to the fairy and smirked a little smugly. "Serenity would be a spaceship. Firefly class. River could spit out all the details at you," he offered before he grinned widely. "You should meet River. Bet the two of you'd get along real good."

"Couldn't," she challenged, though a bit weaker this time. Maybe he could. Maybe he was hiding something. She didn't think so - she didn't sense any power or magic coming from him - but maybe he was just really good at disguise.

... Really good.

"Spaceship?" Luna said, her eyes widening. "You live on a spaceship?" she noted that she should meet River, and she had no reason to doubt Jayne when he said that she'd get along with her. Maybe she would see what room River was in, and go introduce herself.

Tink's eyes narrowed. "You're bluffing," she accused. She didn't believe space travel was possible. Which was ironic, given she was a fairy.

"I live on a spaceship," he agreed to Luna, deciding the best course of action for now was to just ... ignore the impertinent little fairy. "Travel over a buncha different planets in a coupla galaxies," he continued. "Haulin' cargo, doin' odd jobs." Well, odd crime, but no need to corrupt the young'un.

He glanced to the fairy and arched his brows before shrugging in a 'suit yourself' sort of manner. "Coupl'a my crewmates are here. My captain, an' our mechanic, an' our co-pilot. That'd be River," he added for Luna's benefit. He wondered who else was going to show up, and he could think of a few people he'd like to see here.

That was fascinating to her. She knew of spaceships, of course, as muggle inventions that were capable of using something not unlike magic in order to travel into space. The idea was extraoridinary to her, and the fact that it had come from muggles even more so.

A stray thought slipped through her mind that purebloods aimed to eradicate the world of muggles, but perhaps one day they would all just... fly away, find another planet out in the galaxy and leave the wizards to rot on a mostly empty planet. And wouldn't that teach them.

"You must be from the future, then," Luna observed, making the obvious connection. "It's only 1995 where I come from, but Tink says it's the early 1900s, isn't that right?"

Tinkerbell rolled her eyes, and sat down, sulking. "We don't pay attention to years in Neverland. They're not important 'cause no one gets older."

Luna nodded, genuinely interested, "It sounds absolutely fascinating," she agreed before she turned back to Jayne. "Do they have things like that in the future? Things where no one ages?"

He scoffed slightly at the year she mentioned, but he nodded. "Future," he agreed. "Some five hundred years an' change, if I'm doin' my math right." Which he might not be. River could probably calculate it down to the second, and he grinned.

Oh yeah. He definitely wanted to see River make friends with this pair. She could talk crazy to the bitchy fairy and keep the little blonde girl company.

Jayne gave some serious thought to her question before he shook his head. "Nothin' natural, no. We got anti-aging serums an' treatments an' the like, but only for them richer folk on the core planets. Dunno if they work or not; never much cared to investigate that one way or t'other." He never really saw the point of it. You were born, you lived, and then you died. Why try to extend the cosmetic aspect?

Well, he could see why women might want to do it, but ... not him.
