RP: To Cross the Line
Characters: Chase, Rain
Time/Date: Noon, June 14
Location: the OK Corral behind the hardware store
Warnings/Rating: Chase's mouth, possible violence
Summary: Chase mans up and proves himself, or something
Status: Dropped

Chase saw the note from the doctor this morning, he'd been less than thrilled. Mutant rats? What the fuck ever. He'd wandered around the town and the mall and killed some time before heading to the place he'd agreed to meet Rain. He wasn't sure she'd show up, if only because he assumed she'd assume he was lying.

Passing between the convenience store and the hardware store, he saw the numbers painted on both. What the hell was that even about? He'd seen that in the note, too, and he figured it was just another one of their tricks.

Still, he'd committed the numbers to memory as he strolled on past them. Wandering to where the line was, he shoved his hands into his pockets and waited to see if anyone at all was going to show up.

Once they got there ... he'd have to decide whether or not he actually wanted to cross the line. He didn't completely buy their 'something bad would happen' story, but there was the little seed that had been planted. But if he had an audience, he'd have to cross it ...

... but he trusted his magic to protect him.

Rain was here mostly because she wanted to see some jackass get blown up or something similar. Egos like this, she was used to seeing them. Guys thought they were top of the heap and never stopped to think twice about proving it. So she was here mostly to watch that play out. Of course, she was also partly curious. Some fucker tells you not to step over a line, what's the first thing you wanna do? Step the hell over it, that's what. She wasn't stupid enough to do it herself but if someone wanted to be a hero? Not her problem. She'd oh so innocently stand by to watch the carnage. Or not carnage. It was going to be all kinds of disappointing if nothing happened. Or if it really was that butterfly bullshit this kid had been on about.

She'd come dressed more casually than the day before. Oh, she was still armed; that was part and parcel of the Rain Ocampo package. She wasn't wandering anywhere in crazytown not armed; that was just imbecilic. Besides, she had trust issues. As in she didn't trust this Chase guy anymore than she'd trusted the Jack she'd met the day before. You never knew when someone would turn on you for no good goddamn reason. She'd learned that much already.

Already uneasy from the note in the morning and wary of the number bullshit, she made her way down to where they'd agreed to meet, eying the white line with grave suspicion. Upon spotting Chase, she stopped a few feet from him and gave an upward nod. "You him?" She assumed as much but you never knew.

Chase pouted his lower lip slightly and shook his head. "Him who?" he inquired innocently as he swept his gaze over her, assessing. People were sometimes bolder in anonymous mediums.

Not him. He'd say the same thing to someone's face as he'd type to their account. He was guessing from a first glance that she was the same sort of person, and he girnned slightly.

So, the odds were strong there'd be no pussying out of this one. He pulled his hands out of his pockets, displaying his palms to show he was unarmed (ha), and his grin broadened slightly. "Didn't catch your name," he offered to her before extending one hand - in case she was the handshaking sort.

"Chase Collins," he introduced himself before glancing off toward the buildings. "Did you bring friends?" Not that he expected her to have friends yet, but it wasn't like their conversation in the network had been private; anyone who'd seen it knew there was something going on, and where.

He was curious if anyone else was going to show up.

No amount of amusement was given him for the boyish pout, nor would it be. The extended hand was given an eye before she reluctantly slipped her own into it, grip firm as she shook once and released. "Rain Ocampo," she offered briefly, not entirely certain why her first name had come out this time where it hadn't with her last introduction. It didn't matter much, though; there you had it. "No one else is coming," she added as a last minute thought. Friends? She wasn't touching that shit; no one here was her friend, not that being back home changed that statement all that much.

Her gaze slipped to the white line and back to him, expression one of slight amusement. "So are you actually going to do it or did I drag ass down here for nothing?" Rain's arms had crossed over her chest again and she stood so that her weight was on her heels, leaning back and lazy. Part of her was convinced he wouldn't and the other part wanted to use that disbelief to spur him on and make him do it. Either way, he was crossing that line, even if she had to push him.

"What, no foreplay first?" he laughed the words as he crossed his arms over his chest. "I mean," his arms uncrossed as he made a hand-to-heart gesture. "You don't just jump right into the main event without a little warm up, right?"

He glanced to the line, lying there so innocently. Nothing sinister about a white line, right? It wasn't even a double yellow line, and he smirked lightly at that thought. Everyone knew not to cross those, right?

While he didn't really want to lose face, he wanted even less to have something horrific happen to him. But he'd bluffed and she'd called it, so it was put up or shut up, go big or go home - as if - and Chase inhaled slowly.

"You heard if anyone else has actually done this yet?"

His analogy amuse her and a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, threatening to show itself but not actually doing so. "Depends on what the main event is. You're crossing. A line. I don't think that requires any kind of 'warm up'." She was declining comment on the idea of foreplay simply because it wasn't happening whether that was meant as an innuendo or not. This did not seem like the kind of place where you wanted to be caught unawares, in any case.

She wondered if he was nervous, if he had the cajones to actually go through with it or if it had been a huge bluff and she'd busted ass to get out here for nothing. Well, at least she'd have the pride of knowing she'd been right, having that to hold over this Chase kid. If he didn't do it. "I've been here all of a day. If anyone's done it, they sure as shit haven't come back to tell me about it." Or possibly at all.

Her arms uncrossed and Rain shifted her weight to one side, pressing hands into her pockets and eying him up dubiously. "You gonna do it or what?" She was about five seconds shy of calling him a pussy and finding something more useful to do than watch him stall.

He smirked and shrugged before he turned his eyes back over the line. It was a line. Just a stupid line painted by their kidnappers on the ground. Crossing the line wasn't going to do anything to him.

Still, he pulled his power up to the surface, eyes flaring black. If things did go to shit, he didn't want to waste any time opening up to the power. He cracked his knuckles and grinned - leered, really - to Rain. "Here goes," he said before he stepped across the line.

Nothing happened, and he smirked as he turned back to face her. Taking a couple of steps backward, he spread his arms out and grinned. "See? It's just a--"

It was about then that the ground gave way beneath him and he plunged through the newly opened gap. Chase gasped as he hit something liquid, and his first thought was nice time for a swim ... though that was before he felt the stinging burn as the acid began to eat through his clothing.

Too startled to scream, he flailed and and splashed around before he managed to hook the edge of the asphalt and pull himself up out of the tank - or whatever the hell it was. He shot back across the line like his ass was on fire - which wasn't such a far cry from the truth.

Spying a spigot on the back of the hardware store, he used his power to pop it off even as he hurried to strip out of his jeans, his boots, and the two layers of shirts he was wearing. Standing in the jet of water, he shuddered. It was ice cold but at least it was washing off the acid - or whatever the hell that was.

He glanced to Rain and lifted one shoulder in a sort of shrug. "Not butterflies," he offered. If she'd moved to help at all or ... done anything, really ... he'd been in entirely too much of a blind panic to have noticed.
