Attempting to lay the groundwork for a task she still wasn't certain she wanted to complete served to keep her mind busy. A busy mind, she found, made manipulating her body out of the ropes and horse bridals she'd taken for her act a little easier. She understood, now, why the title of her job was Escape artist. There was an art to it, a certain amount of slight of hand, distracting the audience, and mastering particular skills that made it looks like she was restrained when she was still free as a bird. The act that she had been perfecting with Hank's help featured all the jackets, locks and water tanks of traditional acts, but she'd also incorporated just a hint of Burlesque. Just enough that she felt she'd put her own, distinct heel print on the performance. But all of it, the act, the task, even musing about the fact that she was on this train to nowhere that made no sense -- all of it was just a way to stop thinking about home. Even the dinner with Xavier felt, at least in part, like the conflicts that she'd left behind might not follow her here. But ropes and chains were far easier to escape than the consequences of her actions. And no matter how many new connections she made or tricks she learned, being here was little more than the illusion that she was free as a bird, but she was still very much trapped. Jean Grey and Kitty Pryde did their very best to remind her of that fact. Waiting in a boxcar to tell a man the circumstances under which his son died made it worse. But she loved Charles, and she wanted to be the one to tell him what had happened because it was what Scott would have wanted. Frost also felt that lifting this particular weight off of her shoulders would help her better enjoy any future time together that she and Xavier might have. |
