Harry took a deep breath. His heart was pounding, which was weird. This wasn't his Sirius, he reminded himself over and over. This was Sirius before he had ever met him - long before - this was early Azkaban Sirius, somewhere between the memory-Sirius and the pictures he had seen of his parent's wedding, and the gaunt, hopeless man he had seen for the first time on the Dursley's television five summers ago. Certainly not the Sirius he had lost, the Sirius who whenever he thought of him now was falling backwards in a limp arc. He shook his head hard to try and rid it of that image. He was so tired, but he couldn't sleep, not when Sirius was here, had been here since the first moment and he hadn't realised, hadn't known that someone who was dead could be suddenly, brazenly alive again in whatever this place was. That single terrifying fact was enough to drown out the rest of the strangeness - the clothes, the colours, the people who thought he was just a story, the fact that he had left behind his friends when they needed him. He tried not to think of Ron and Ginny, the other Weasleys. He hadn't even had a chance to mourn Fred, to even think about Lupin, Tonks, Colin... No, not now. Right now he was going to see Sirius again. Really real, solid Sirius, not the shade who had led him into the forest that night. Sirius who remembered him only as a baby. Well, he'd done that once before, and this time he knew the truth, and he wasn't afraid. It would be easier this time. Right? One way to find out. Telling himself - not for the first time - that he was an idiot, he took another breath and knocked on the door. "Sirius?" he called out, shifting uncomfortably in his purple (ugh, so purple, but at least they weren't covered in sweat and blood like the ones he'd fallen asleep in) clothes. "It's Harry." |
