Starkiller Base was as much a planet as any other. And there wouldn't have been a war if you'd just peacefully surrendered, but you decided to prioritize some abstract notion of freedom and self-determination over your people's safety and wellbeing. Those deaths are on your heads as much as they're on ours. Whether or not you care to see it that way.
