As Nella Larsen once wrote, there is a hazardous business of “passing,” this breaking away from all that was familiar and friendly to take one’s chance in another environment, not entirely strange, perhaps, but certainly not entirely friendly.
Powers are our natural state, and that for any person affected by them being turned off. Anyone wishing to deny that is no different than a African person who uses bleach to lighten their skin, or a gay person who checks into conversion therapy. They may have a right to make a personally destructive decision for themselves, but absolutely none to enforce that on anyone else.
I empathize with them, that it must suck to be dead. But passing for what we are not makes us all Dead.
