Eleven knew better than anyone, people don't belong in cages. She'd spent her whole life in a cage, though instead of bars, she had cold block walls and an empty cement floor. She had a chair to be strapped in, she had electrodes to be taped on. She had all of that before; only afterward did she realize how wrong it was. How she was no different from the animals in wire cages Papa had brought to her to hurt. She was never going back there, never back to the cage. She would never let anyone else, either.
Eleven was so happy to know Jean, even in these short weeks. Jean, with headpowers like her's, but so much better. No nosebleeds for Jean- and she was nice. She was kind. Eleven always wanted to be around Jean, but she also liked exploring on her own, now that she wasn't in a cage- that's how she'd found the people locked around the zoo.
Now they were outside helping, bundled against the cold with the warm things the scientists had given them, looking for the proper occupants of the zoo. Eleven stayed close to Jean, like always when they were around together. It might be a hard day for her, but Jean was there to make it better.
