[Letter left on Dr. Jekyll's desk, amid some papers]
My Dearest Doctor Jekyll,
It has been a privilege these many long years to be your humble shadow. And while no man could ever enjoy years of being kept a secret, shoved into the dark recesses of guilt and shame, the liberty which you have recently granted me is so worth the wait that I cannot express my gratitude in mere words. As such, it's only in action that I can show you how much your gift truly means to me.
You must know as I know that once this door has been opened it cannot be closed again. It's done now. And what a miraculous thing you have done, Doctor. They'll speak of your deeds for ages, I have no doubt about that. And my name will float right alongside it; no longer a shadow hidden in the darkness of your deepest fantasies but actualized and realized with the power you always wished you had. Everything propriety and decorum won't let you do, Doctor, I will do for you. This is my gift to you, in return for my freedom.
The things you've seen and heard already are but a start. Just a taste of what I can, and will, do. Things you have only dreamed of are yet to come. I cannot promise you the world, but I can promise you things that you have only held in your mind's eye. If there was ever a time to indulge a little bit more and to let yourself have what you've always wanted - power, prestige, notoriety - it is now. Grasp it by its fragile neck and clench. Or, allow me to do it for you. I would be only too pleased.
Let us take on this world together, Doctor Jekyll. Life, as we've seen recently, is far too short for anything else.
Yours, and always yours,
Edward Hyde
