Sam was surprised to see the flame doused by the liquid, despite that being the usual reaction of water on flame, he'd sort of expected it to carry on regardless or change colour or something. That didn't make it any less fascinating to him and when Gretel sighed out that breath he realised he'd been holding his as well.
At her question he looked from her face to the bowl and exhaled slowly. "As I'll ever be." He said reaching out for the bowl, there was no reluctance or hesitance in his voice but he still felt nervous as all hell as he brought the tonic to his lips. He took a sip at first, then satisfied that no ill effects immediately followed he drank deeply until the bowl was empty - better to do it quickly he thought.
He glanced at Gretel, he didn't feel any different and he wasn't sure whether something dramatic was supposed to happen. She probably wasn't sure either having never done it before. He was beginning to think maybe it hadn't worked and was about to say so when a warm feeling started across his chest. It spread from there to his limbs as if it were flowing through his veins, across his shoulders and his neck, right to the top of his head. There were flashes of blue and gold behind his eyes and everything in the room looked a little brighter and more vibrant for a second before his vision settled.
Sam held his hands outstretched in front of him, watching them carefully as the warmth settled into a gentle tingling feeling. He could've sworn they'd glowed in a way that reminded him of the trials just a moment ago, but he couldn't be sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. He let out another deep breath but somehow it wasn't as laboured as before. It almost sounded relieved.
