When Sam said he was going for more fish, Raven had been grateful and relieved, and had even offered to go with him. Though she was injured, still a little dizzy, and off balance, she didn’t want him to have to go alone any more than she wanted to be alone herself, but he insisted, and he’d promised to come back. Settled against the wall, the blonde watched him head for the tunnel and called out one last piece of advice. “If you go left and hit the area we all came up through the tubes in, stay there - the passage to the right leads to the cave where that monster thing was.” She waited for him to acknowledge the message, then leaned her head against the stone as she waited. Honestly, Raven wasn’t sure how long she sat there waiting, but it was long enough for her to drift into a fitful doze, until a loud sound woke her, echoing through the cave and disturbing the bats high above. She tugged the corner of her tarp over her face as she blinked several times and waited for them to calm down, frowning. She’d heard that sound before - and had started to believe it meant someone had died. Once the bats settled again, Raven lowered the tarp and glanced around. “...Sam?” She hesitated, then pushed to her feet to walk towards the exit of the cave. After a moment, she stopped halfway and sat on a rock to wait, staring at the dark exit as she waited for some sign of her friend. It may have been minutes or hours later, but eventually Raven lowered her head and closed her eyes as guilt and grief overtook her. He wasn’t coming back. “I’m sorry, Gretel,” she whispered quietly in the dim cave, wishing there was something she could do and knowing there wasn’t. |
