What: Bail takes a break.
Rating: HG for Hunger Games
Bail would have liked to take some time to explore the area that they had been originally dropped in to, but he assumed that after five days, it would have been picked clean by any of the others who had had a similar idea. Besides that, it was a wide open expanse of cave and Bail was wary of running into anyone else, especially anyone else he didn't want to run in to. After Poe's encounter with Phasma (how long she'd been lingering nearby, Bail didn't want to consider), Bail requested that they move. He had no desire to be around her, getting even less sleep than he already was, having to keep one eye open in case she striked. While she was in the hot spring, the two of them headed off, shouldering their supplies, back to where it all started. Feeling foggy and stiff from the lack of proper medical attention to his injury and their water and food rationing, in the pretense of seeking out somewhere new to remain for a while more efficiently, Bail suggested Poe go on ahead and leave him to seek out what was available in a different direction. In reality, Bail wanted some time to himself. And he needed to rest. He wasn't as young as he once was, and this was harder work than he was used to. He found a small alcove not too far from the cornucopia and waited until he could see Poe disappear down the tunnel in the distance before crouching down and sitting on the damp ground. Bail sat, knees bent to conform to the enclosed space, trying to stay out of sight of anyone who might be traveling past. He held onto the hilt of one of his knives with his good hand and cradled his injured one against his stomach. He knew he would be no match for anyone threatening who happened to come upon him like this, but he hoped he would be left alone. Just for a few minutes, an hour at most, or at least until Poe returned. After a full and unpredictable life, Bail still found ways to be surprised. With this entire situation he had found himself in, and not only the current 'kill or be killed' scenario but the experiment at large, Bail considered it quite out of his realm of understanding. The jumbled timelines and experiences, the varying universes and beings - Bail had always believed in the vastness of the galaxy, but this was something else entirely. It had been months now, and he was no closer to understanding his place here and role than he was on day one. He was thankful for Leia, of course, especially now knowing that he hadn't had any more time with her in his own life. If he had known his last conversation with his daughter had been the one it was, he would have said more. He was thankful also for new friendships, both those from his own world and those from others. But most of all, here and now, he was thankful for the companionship of Poe Dameron, that the young man was willing to stick by him, both as a protector and as one needing protecting. If Bail had been blessed with a son, he would have hoped for someone like Poe. The most difficult part of all of this was the ache Bail felt regarding his wife. He missed Breha more and more every day. He missed the sound of her voice, the way the corner of her mouth twitched when she was holding back a smile, the way the strands of her hair, when it was loose, felt between his fingers. He missed their arguments even. He missed the light glow of her pulmonodes, reminding them both that she was warm, alive, and beside him. But at the same time, he was glad she wasn't here. Maybe that was the wrong thing to be grateful for - after all, her alternative was death at Alderaan's destruction, but - no, he wouldn't want her here now, not with this scenario going on, not sitting there watching him play this out, potentially die (even, he hoped, if it wouldn't truly be death). It was bad enough that Leia was doing so. Bail didn't know how long he waited there, resting, but when he crawled out, his back ached and his joints creaked. He stretched his injured hand out, then his other, and glanced around. Poe would return soon, he told himself, and then they'd find a place to set up camp once again. |
