Who: Charlotte Whisp & Sirius Black
What: Offering a distraction in the form of a first kiss
When: Evening, November 12th
Where: Astronomy Tower
Rating: SFW
Status: Incomplete

All in all, the plan to make Sirius believe that they'd all forgotten his birthday was going extremely well. None of them had even bat an eyelash when James' parents had sent Sirius his birthday cupcakes that morning, none of them mentioning it at all. Although Charlotte was usually mean to Sirius, she did feel a little bad when she'd seen the look on his face when everybody brushed it off. She wasn't the sort to ruin a good surprise however and had managed to keep herself from disclosing their true intentions. Other than the fact it was Sirius' birthday, it was generally a fairly average day. She didn't have any classes with the birthday boy himself, and so didn't need to think about maintaining face until dinner. Rather expectantly, Sirius was absent and Charlie was sure she'd know where to find him. So after eating her own food, she transfigured one of the plates into a container and filled it as full as possible with chips before bidding her friends farewell for the moment. They needed a while to get the surprise party ready and so Charlie needed to bide her time.

It took her a while to reach where she suspected Sirius was. What with it being the tallest tower in the castle, the trek to the Astronomy Tower wasn't a quick one. Before she began her ascent up the final set of stairs, she took a moment to fold the waist of her skirt over a few times in order to make it shorter, sure that Sirius would appreciate the sentiment. She then made the last leg of her trip, opening the door to the main chamber without knocking. Naturally professor d'Eath was down in the Great Hall and so Charlie knew that if Sirius was here, he'd be alone. At least, she hoped he would be. She didn't exactly feel like walking in on him with some random bird, but chances were that he was too depressed to do such a thing right now.

"Sirius?" she called out after looking around for a moment, unsure of where he could be, "Are you in here?"

To say Sirius had spent the day sulking was a severe understatement. Maybe he wasn't expecting the whole school to spell out 'Happy Birthday Sirius' while they sung but was it really asking too much for his friends to remember? Sure, it had been an eventful week but he'd reminded them constantly and now nothing?

He was touched by the gift from the Potters - what more could a boy ask for other than cake and a hangover cure? - but it just served as another reminder that the day now meant nothing to his own family, or apparently his friends.

Thankfully, he only had classes in the morning so after lingering over his lunch in sullen silence, he headed up to his favourite room in the Astronomy Tower with his cupcakes and his smokes. Popping the window open, he clambered out on to the ledge and made himself at home, spending the afternoon eating, smoking and amusing himself by sending small birds out across the castle grounds.

He frowned when he heard a familiar voice, not sure how long he'd been sitting out here, and, after carefully shifting his almost empty box of cupcakes to the side, he poked his head back in.

"Charlie? Is that you?"

Hearing Sirius' voice, Charlie made towards it and had to stop herself from instantly scolding him. What was he doing sitting out on the roof? What would happen if he slipped? Merlin, did the boy have no sense at all? In being somebody who was extremely anxious about heights, Charlie didn't get too close as she approached him. She most definitely wasn't going outside in order to drag him in either. The desire to tell him off was lost when she saw his face though, that dejected look making her frown sympathetically. Hopefully it would all be worth it once he realised later on what they were doing.

"I brought you some food," she said once she stopped near the window, holding the container out for him to take, "It's not much but I couldn't exactly carry several plates up here with me." After explaining, she took a moment to examine his face before continuing in a somewhat strained tone, "Please be careful out there."

Sirius blinked at the sight of Charlie and, after looking at her for a moment, he frowned and turned so he could see her properly.

"Thanks. I'm kind of full up on cake so I'm not that hungry anyway," he said, gesturing to the box beside him before reaching out for the container. Well at least she knew what food to bring, he thought, shoving a few chips into his mouth and leaning his head back against the wall again. "I'm fine, Char. I'm not going to fall."

Would any of you care if I did anyway?

"So what are you doing up here anyway?" he asked, chewing on his fingernail and pretending not to care. "Got a hot date or something?"

Spotting the empty box, Charlotte sighed. That, added with the pout and general defeated air that festered around Sirius made her want to roll her eyes. Amazingly enough she resisted, instead moving in order to rest both hands on the windowsill. "Not unless you're asking me on a date," she replied, hoping that some kind of flirtatious humour would amuse him. She was sure that it wasn't going to pull a smile from him but a girl had to try. She was pleased to see that he was eating the chips though, despite his comment about not feeling hungry.

"I came up here to see you, you numpty," she went on to say, her eyes catching his as she sighed. She couldn't tell him that nobody had actually forgotten his birthday, so therefore she couldn't return the question and ask why he was up here all alone either. "Unless you'd prefer it if I left you alone?" she went on to say, a small pout on her own face, "Which I hope isn't the case, seeing as I'm battling vertigo just by being here." It was then that her eyes looked down, a small shudder running through her as she backed off just a little.

Shrugging, Sirius ate a few more chips before pulling out another cigarette, frowning at the almost empty box.

"You'd just knock me back anyway, probably throw in a few insults while you're at it," he said, wondering if his mopiness was annoying her as much as it was annoying himself. Merlin, what he wouldn't give to be able to snap out of his sulking. Still, it was their fault he was like this so if he had to suffer through it, so did they. And in this case, 'they' was one person.

He turned to face her, raising his eyebrows at this statement before blowing his smoke out at her.

"You willingly came to visit me?" he asked, wondering if he'd actually fallen asleep and this was a very realistic dream. "With... what looks like a much shorter skirt than usual none the less. Is this some new form of torture you've devised then?"

Truth be told, yes. Charlotte found self-pity extremely grating at the best of times and Sirius seemed to be the master of it. She has to reason with herself in her mind though. As much as she wanted to tell him to snap out of it and to get over it, she couldn't risk hurting his feelings in case he stormed off somewhere. The others needed more time and so she would have to swallow her comments in order to give them that. "You're not a dating sort of guy," she reasoned, raising her eyebrows and giving him a disapproving glance, "Besides, you don't really fancy me. You just see me as someone who you can chase. If I made it easy and gave in, you wouldn't be interested any more."

As Sirius noticed her skirt, Charlie scoffed a little to herself and backed up some in order for him to get a better look. "I figured that you'd notice," she said, running her hands over it to smooth it down a little. It just covered her mid-thigh and was a lot shorter than she was usually comfortable with but today she didn't really care what it took to actually allow Sirius to have a good day. "Torture?" she went on to say, shaking her head and moving back to lean against the windowsill, "Of course not. Flashing skin isn't an intelligent way to inflict pain. I just fancied a change, that's all."

Giving him a pointed look, Charlie folded her arms and sighed as she snuck a peek down the side of the castle. They were extremely high and her stomach was churning a little, but she had to deal with it. It was for the greater good. "And yes, I came to see you," she said after a moment, "Even though we make mean comments to one another a lot, you're still my friend. When I didn't see you at dinner, I didn't want you to starve to death or anything."

"I'm really not," Sirius agreed, making a face. "It'd make it much easier if I was but I figure if I keep the people I love and the people I sleep with separate, there's less chance for it to blow up in my face. And, admittedly, I do like a challenge and you're definitely proving to be that, but it's not like I don't like you. If you want the truth, I like you enough to know that you deserve better than me anyway."

Merlin, what was with all this outpouring lately? He hadn't even had anything to drink. Yet.

"Don't suppose you brought any firewhiskey, did you? Tucked up under that skirt or something?" he asked, turning back around to face her and stubbing his cigarette out on the window ledge. "And yes, it is torture when you're flaunting things I can't have."

He gave her a sad smile, tapping his box of cupcakes again.

"I have my cake from Jamie's mum, I won't starve. I think there's a few left if you want one. They're good."

"I think that's a good philosophy to have," Charlie admitted, feeling somewhat strange for actually agreeing with Sirius for a change. It wasn't entirely unheard of but it wasn't something that occurred regularly. It made her feel a little sad that Sirius didn't find himself good enough for her and she actually disagreed with him, but his solemn lack of usual egotistical confidence took precedence over her personal opinion. "But you should stop being so hard on yourself," she said, "You're not as bad as I often tell you that you are, and this misery that's radiating from you doesn't suit you at all."

At the mention of firewhiskey, Charlie shook her head. "You think I could fit a bottle under this skirt?" she asked with a laugh, "Sorry to disappoint but I don't think I could fit anything under this." She was sure that she was walking intentionally into an innuendo but the thought was rather amusing, and if it did anything to cheer Sirius up, then all the better. Which was mostly the reason why she ignored the latter part of his comment, not wanting to talk about why she wasn't going to give it up to him like so many other girls would have by now.

Giving Sirius a smile, Charlie held her hand out for a cake and tried hard not to give into her guilt again. She was pleased that he'd eaten the majority, as she was sure the wording had spelled out the very thing that she was attempting to ignore. "I'm sure they're very good," she commented, "Especially seeing as you seem to have eaten several of them."

"If you keep agreeing with me on things, I'll start to think something's up. It's throwing out the natural order of things," he commented, eyes focused on the Forbidden Forest, wondering if anything could be seen from up here.

"I'm not being hard on myself," he said defensively. "I'm awesome and you'd be lucky to have me, but we'd end up killing each other. Besides, I could never be someone's boyfriend."

Sirius smirked at her next words, wondering if she'd push him out the window if he responded.

"Care to test that theory?" he asked, evidently having deciding that his need to respond outweighed the likelihood of her committing murder.

Nodding, he took another cake for himself, leaving just a few plain ones and half his name in the box. "I was hungry," he said in defence. "Besides it's not every day I get cupcakes with my name on it. Or cupcakes at all. She's a good cook too so I never knock back anything she makes."

Sirius decided not to mention that she was also the only person who had ever baked him his own birthday cake, not counting Kreacher's attempts, no doubt at the suggestion of his little brother rather than his parents. Birthdays had never really been all that celebrated in the Black house.

At the mention of something being up, Charlie bit her lip and covered her slight panic by rolling her eyes. Sirius seemed to be looking out over the forest however, something for which she was thankful. "You've got a point," she said with a nod, sure that the pair of them would be a terrible couple should anything as strange as a relationship form between them. Sirius simply wasn't the sort of guy to settle down and that was something that Charlie ideally looked for in a boy, so it would never work. "As for the natural order of things," she continued, "It's not the wildest thing in the world for us to agree on things. Uncommon, sure. But not unheard of."

Having expected a comment such as that, Charlie chuckled and shoved him lightly in the arm. "You wish," she muttered, taking one of the cakes from the box and smiling to herself as she scooped up some of the icing and licked her finger quite obliviously. Another look up at him and she smiled somewhat deviously, repeating the action and laughing openly as she smeared some of the frosting on his cheek. Really, she couldn't have helped it. "That's a good look for you," she said with a smirk, looking back down at the cake before innocently eating more of the icing.

"It does seem to be happening more and more," Sirius pointed out, twisting his lighter between his fingers. "I think you're coming around to my way of thinking. Not bad, considering it only took seven years. Or maybe we're just doing that thing where we become more alike because we spend too much time together."

Sirius couldn't help but laugh at the nudge to his arm. "I do wish, it's true," he said with an exaggerated sigh. "But I have to say, if you can't fit a bottle of firewhiskey under there you'd have even more trouble with me."

Turning to grin up at her, he instead found himself trying not to stare as she licked her fingers, which was especially hard since he could have sworn she was doing it in slow motion. Now was not the time, he told himself. Still, he couldn't help making a noise of protest as he felt icing being smeared on his cheek before another thought occurred to him and he gave her a wicked smile.

"Ah, if only you knew," he said, lightly dabbing at the spot of frosting on his cheek and licking it from his finger. "But you know there's a Gryffindor law that says if you put frosting anywhere on someone's body, you have to lick it off. It's only fair. Unless you want me to be all sticky and covered in ants by tonight."

"Your way of thinking isn't thinking at all," Charlie said, a mock pout on her lips. Tapping her chin with her fingers, she shrugged. She honestly didn't mind Sirius, no matter what petty squabbles occurred between the pair of them. Really, Charlie found it more amusing than anything else.

At the mention of him wishing to test out the theory, Charlie shook her head. "Using engorgement charms on yourself is probably hazardous to your health," she replied snarkily, raising one eyebrow in order to shoot him a highly sceptical look. It probably wasn't as effective as she'd hoped however, due to the blush that she could feel forming on her cheeks at such a comment.

Only an idiot would assume that Sirius wasn't watching as she licked the icing from her finger. She tried not to pay too much attention to that however, seeing as it was expected of Sirius. What wasn't was his next statement. "There's no Gryffindor law," she stated with another shake of her head. In being a Gryffindor, she knew that Sirius was lying in order to get her to lick him. Why anybody would want that was completely beyond her but she decided to humour him. "Come here then, you baby. I'm not moving any closer to the window," she said, "Thank Godric I only smeared this on your cheek."

Sirius snorted in disgust at this suggestion of engorgement charms. "I've never had any need for such charms, thanks," he said huffily, half tempted to unfasten his trousers to prove his point. "I think you're mistaking me for Jamie. He's got so girly over Evans I wouldn't be surprised if his dick actually disappeared altogether." Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh but a birthday boy ignored was a bitter thing, especially when it was Sirius.

"There is too," he said stubbornly. "I just made it up then. I'm a Gryffindor, I can make laws. Especially when they concern girls licking icing off me." When Charlotte relented, though, Sirius at least resisted the urge to cheer and even manoeuvred himself inside the window so she wouldn't have to lean out. "Come and get it then," he said with a smirk, presenting his frosting-smeared cheek to her, but not before he transferred some of the icing to his lower lip. "You got some here too by the way."

Charlie couldn't even be disgusted at Sirius' crudeness, mostly because the statement about James made her scoff. "I hope for Lily's sake that it doesn't disappear," she said a moment later, unable to stop herself from chuckling. "We need godchildren to spoil, Sirius," she then stated matter-of-factly, "And we can't have those if James is a woman."

Moving aside as Sirius came back into the room, Charlie rolled her eyes, "Since I'm a Gryffindor as well, I could just as easily revoke that rule." As her eyes caught the icing of Sirius' lower lip, she froze. Looking at him with slightly wide eyes, she shook her head. "I'm not kissing you," she said, her voice quieter and softer than it had been all afternoon. Of course, what Sirius didn't know (that she knew of) was that she'd never kissed anybody before and she was highly unsettled by the idea of letting him have it so easily. So instead, she placed her hand on his unfrosted cheek in order to pull him closer before hastily licking the frosting off as she'd stated that she would. The bit on his lip went ignored.

"I kind of assumed Evans was the man in that relationship actually," he said with a smirk. "But as long as I get to be Uncle Sirius I don't really care which way it goes. And I'm already laying claim to broomsticks for birthday presents, Whisp or no Whisp."

Sirius thought about this for a second before he came up with, "Nope. You need two Gryffindors to agree to revoke it. Good luck with that."

He was still grinning at this when he noticed her eyes widen and he frowned. He didn't think a quick kiss was that scandalous, especially when they were both 18 and had known each other for seven years. Besides, surely they'd kissed at some point over their many, many dare-or-dare games. Hadn't they? Although now that he thought about it, Sirius couldn't remember that ever happening, and he'd pretty much kissed everyone.

Lost in these thoughts, Sirius didn't even manage to turn his head at the last minute to sneak in a kiss. As he licked the bit of icing from his lip, his frown softened and he reached a hand out to stop her from moving too far away.

"I promise I'm not diseased," he said lightly. "And I won't bite. Unless you request it. Why don't you want to kiss me? Do I revolt you that much?"

With a roll of her eyes, Charlotte shook her head. "I'm supervising that trip," she stated, dead set on being there when the hypothetical children of the future received their first broomsticks, "And as for the rule, Lily, Alice, and Mary will all back me up. So consider the rule hereby revoked."

Licking her own lips once Sirius' cheek was clean, Charlie tried her hardest not to get flustered. She did a poor job of it however, her cheeks already betraying her. "I know you're not really diseased," she admitted, her eyes no longer able to focus on his face as her head bowed slightly in embarrassment. Merlin, why did this have to be such an issue? It wasn't as though anybody else thought that kisses were special, seeing as she'd watched all of her friends engage in the act carelessly over the years. In truth, she was rather amazed that she'd been able to hold off for so long. "Of course you don't, and it isn't you in particular," she said quietly, her eyes now focused on her wrist in Sirius' grip, "I just...You're going to make fun of me for this but I've never kissed anybody before. There, happy? More ammunition for you to mock me with."

This definitely wasn't what she'd had in mind as a distraction. Giving Sirius more reasons to make fun of her was not high on her list of priorities. At least he wasn't thinking about leaving.

Sirius rolled his eyes in turn, already planning ways to be the favourite uncle/aunt. "Fine but if they're being paid for by me, my name goes first on the card. And I'm sure I could get the girls to agree with me somehow."

He watched her carefully, not sure why she was getting so flustered and embarrassed. For a moment he wondered if she actually did like him more than she let on but surely if that was the case, she'd be all for a kiss. He was half expecting to hear of some dark, traumatic event involving a devilishly handsome Gryffindor that when she finally admitted the truth, his eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"Oh," he said, ever the eloqent one. "Really, never? And I'm not going to mock you. I'm actually kind of impressed that you lasted seven years in Gryffindor without kissing someone. I mean you must have had hundreds of offers just from me alone, and that's not even counting mistletoe season." Sirius loosened the hold on Charlotte's hand, tugging her just a bit closer. "So, do you want to kiss someone? Or are you just holding out for... well someone who's not a drunken snog at a party?"

Still unable to reach his eyes, Charlotte shrugged but put up no resistance when she was pulled closer. In fact, it gave her more of an excuse to avoid his gaze, instead focusing on one of his shirt buttons as though it were the most fascinating thing in the world. "Really," she confirmed with a nod. He voice was still hushed and she was sure that this was probably the quietest Sirius had even seen her. "I'm sort of proud that you sound so amazed," she then said, "But I don't know. It has to happen some time but I'd prefer it if the bloke in question wasn't drunk."

After a moment, she sighed. "I'm not expecting it to be earth-shatteringly perfect or anything. I'm not delusional," she said, "I just haven't felt the need for it. There's never been a right moment."

"Mm, well now you know how to shut me up," Sirius said lightly, watching her carefully as he slid his fingers through hers and squeezed her hand. He may not be the best at understanding girls but at least he knew enough not to push her right now or she might push him right back, and in her case it might be a literal push out the window.

Despite these thoughts, he still found himself standing and moving in front of her, even finding it in him to keep his hands to himself however much he wanted to brush back that bit of hair from her face, knowing she'd just see it as a come on.

"Well... if you want to," he began, trying to act like it was a throwaway line. "I'm not drunk and this actually seems like a nice moment for us. Besides I'm told I'm a great kisser. If you wanted to, you could just say yes. Or no, it's up to you. But I would like to point out, this is probably the first time I'm not being an arse about it and even when I was, I did actually want to kiss you. It wasn't a... conquest thing or something."

Sirius bit his lip, wondering if he was going to get a knee to the balls or just a friendly shove and some scorn.

Charlotte continued to watch their hands and felt more than a little confused when she felt Sirius actually hold onto hers properly. "I doubt it'll work at any other time but now," she said lightly, trying not to feel too down. Despite Sirius' assumptions, Charlie liked him and so knew far better than to push him out of the window, no matter what he did.

Amazingly enough for Sirius, he didn't get a knee to the bollocks or a friendly shove. Instead, Charlie stood motionless for a moment as she considered the situation. In all fairness, she believed Sirius when he said that it felt like a good moment. The fact that he said that it wasn't a conquest thing also helped, although she wasn't sure just how much she believed him. It wasn't as though he was bad looking either and, despite their consistent arguing, he was a good friend and she knew he wouldn't mess this up. On the other hand though, if she gave him this then he'd have it to dangle over her head for the rest of forever and it wasn't something that she could just take back. He'd probably preen excessively about how his charms finally cracked her, how she saw him as utterly desirable. There was also the slight fear deep in her mind that he'd want more and that was definitely something she wasn't giving to him. So really, the pros and cons were on fairly equal ground; a fact that didn't help her in the slightest.

Squeezing his hand slightly in a somewhat nervous fashion, Charlotte shrugged. It wasn't a yes and it wasn't a no, which she was sure wasn't helpful at all. She simply wasn't sure though.

A shrug was more than Sirius had expected, especially when combined with a squeeze of his hand. He stood in silence watching her, not wanting to do anything she didn't want but, at the same time, feeling like this was actually a nice moment and it'd be a shame to waste it. Still, it did seem like it was a big deal to her.

"Promise I won't tell anyone," he said, sliding his fingers under her chin and gently nudging her head up so he could look at her properly. "If anyone asks what we were doing, I'll just say I hit on you relentlessly and you turned me down with some cutting remarks as always. It's just... for you. For us. Swear on my friends lives. Anyway I figure friends are good people to have first kisses with. Rather someone you know than a stranger, right?"

Of course it really didn't help that she was looking even cuter than usual right now. Licking his lips, he gave in and brushed her hair back, letting it curl around his fingers as he stepped in closer before his fingers brushed her jaw line. She hadn't pushed him away or moved back at least so, more hesitantly than he usually did, he leant in slowly, giving her a last chance to stop him before softly pressing his lips against hers.

Feeling Sirius' fingers under her chin, Charlie looked up and actually met his eyes for the first time in what seemed like aeons. She didn't want to make a big deal out of this, especially since it was Sirius and she knew for a fact that nothing more would come of this. Not that she actually wanted to pursue a relationship with him. As both of them had agreed on, he wasn't boyfriend material. She still felt an odd fluttering in her stomach though, something which she put down to anxiety.

"Don't swear on people's lives," she whispered, watching as his face moved in closer, "But yes, you're right." She didn't get to say any more as she felt his fingers brush her hair, and she took that as a sign to close her eyes. The moment before his lips met hers was tense, yet it seemingly shattered as soon as she felt the touch. After standing as though frozen for a second, she tentatively moved her hand up to rest on the side of his neck as the other shifted to his waist. Her posture was tense but she refused to relax just yet, still getting used to the sensation of being kissed.

Sirius had been almost startled when she looked him in the eye like that. He was pretty sure no girl (or boy) he'd been about to kiss had ever looked at him quite like she just had. It was almost a relief - and yet, also a disappointment - when she had closed her eyes but by then he was kissing her so nothing else seemed to matter.

He let his hand slide up into her hair again as his other arm slid around her waist to rest his hand lightly on the small of her back. He found himself tracing gentle circles on her back with his fingers, almost willing her to relax as they continued to kiss. The kiss remained quite chaste so it was almost a surprise how much he was actually enjoying it.

Sirius' fingers on her back made her smile, despite the fact that she tried to repress it. She didn't want to move too much lest she ruin the moment, but she honestly couldn't help herself. It didn't take her long to relax at all, her body unwinding a lot faster than she'd expected. She allowed herself to simply enjoy the embrace, feeling her face flush at the soft touch to her hair and the continued tickling on her back. After a few more moments, she thought it okay to pull away and so she gently detached herself from him and leaned back, a coy smile on her face as she looked at him.

There were a few moments of silence then in which she let her gaze flicker over his face, the adrenaline rushing through her body. "Happy birthday," she then whispered, knowing that she'd potentially ruined the plan but not really caring. After flashing him a somewhat cheeky smile, she leaned in again and this time instigated a kiss, pressing her lips lightly to Sirius' as the hand on his hip squeezed gently and her thumb softly grazed the underside of his jaw.

Sirius let her pull back from the kiss but his hands remained where they were, his thumb now rubbing the back of her neck as he smiled at her. That really had been quite a nice kiss, and he liked to think it would have made a good first one too. At Charlotte's words, he laughed, shaking his head at her before happily returning her kiss.

"Okay, so who's plan was it to pretend you'd all forgotten?" he asked, grinning as he pressed his forehead against hers. "It was that bastard James wasn't it? Yep, that's it, I'm going to end him. Still, jokes on him. He's not getting any cupcakes."

He'd known there was no way they could have all forgotten - not with the way he'd been badgering them about it - but he felt a rush of relief run through him as he shook his head again.

"I have to say that was a very nice birthday present though," he added, his hand moving up from her back to brush his thumb over the tip of her nose and then down over her lips. "That'll be hard to top."

After the pair of them had broken once more, Charlie smiled. "I'm not at liberty to say," she whispered, not expressing on her face that it had in fact been James' idea from the get-go. Clearly Sirius already knew though, so there was no point in outright denying it. "You're not allowed to tell anybody that I let slip though," she continued, leaning back a little and giving him a stern look. She really did hope that he kept his mouth shut.

At the mention of birthday presents, Charlie looked away shyly before rolling her eyes at herself. She didn't admit it out loud but the soft touches to her face were extremely nice, her lips curving into a smile as the pad of his thumb brushed them. "Well I'm glad that I gave you a good present, even though I definitely wasn't planning on it," she replied as she shrugged slightly, "But your promise stands. You're not allowed to tell anybody what happened." Charlie was unsure whether or not she'd even tell anybody, rather liking the idea that she and Sirius now had a secret. Not that she was ashamed or anything. She simply wanted to keep it between the two of them.

"That means yes," Sirius decided, sighing. "Shame, he was a good best mate while it lasted. But don't worry, your secret is safe with me. I've already got my 'I'm so shocked!' face ready."

He brushed his thumb over her cheekbone, studying her face more intently than he realised.

"You did," he said softly, giving a small nod as he curled her hair back around her ear. "And if your plan was to cheer me up or distract me, you definitely succeeded. In both actually." Sirius smiled at her words, nodding. "I know, I promise. I won't breathe a word. Swear on my wand."

"Better make it believable," Charlie said, letting her hand slide down from his neck in order to poke him lightly in the shoulder as a warning. She then let her hand rest against his collarbone as he brushed her cheek and played with her hair, giving her another reason to smile shyly. There was a strange intimacy in that moment. Not so much a sexual one but one of comfort.

Upon hearing that she had successfully done what she'd set out to do, Charlie smiled proudly before leaning up and pressing a kiss to Sirius' cheek. After gaining a reassurance of silence, she nodded and allowed herself to step further backwards, the hand on Sirius' chest sliding down his arm in order to grip his hand. Letting her fingers slide through his, she squeezed lightly before letting go and speaking, "If you thought that was good then you're going to love what I have to show you next, so go and clean up your mess outside of the window and hurry up."

"Oh, I will," Sirius said confidently, smiling as her hand came to rest on his chest. "I figure if I just curse them all out it'll be believable enough. You have a really pretty smile by the way. Don't know if I've ever told you."

As if a switch had been flipped, Sirius grinned at this news and was automatically back to his usual self.

"Wow, so I actually am going to see what we can fit under your skirt?" he asked, laughing and ducking out of the way before she could hit him. After pocketing his smokes, he frowned at the container of cold chips and, without a second thought, emptied them out the window and brushed out the remaining crumbs. This done, he filled the container with half of the remaining cupcakes and presented it to Charlotte as if they were the crown jewels.

"For you my lady," he said with a bow before offering her his arm. "Shall we?"

Charlie was rather taken aback by the comment but accepted it gratefully, flashing him her apparent 'pretty smile' before she nudged him off. "Not even all of the charm you could muster would allow you to see what you can fit under here," she said pointedly, gripping the hem of her skirt and holding it as she turned on her heel. The breeze created by such a motion let the garment ripple slight and so Sirius more than likely got a flash of her underwear. Well, it was only his birthday once a year...

She did smile as he returned though, accepting the box with a grin. "Thank you, good sir," she replied before looping her arm through his. "We shall," she continued, heading towards the door slowly, "And I'm positive that your birthday will look up from this point on."

"Is that a challenge?" Sirius asked, the grin freezing on his face as he turned back just in time to see a flash of red from beneath her skirt. Merlin, this birthday was just getting better and better...

"I'm pretty sure it's reached it's pinnacle actually, but we'll see how good we can make it," he said, kissing her cheek before holding the door open for her.

"I don't see why not," Charlie replied with a roll of her eyes, "I mean, it's never stopped you before." Indeed, she was rather sure that they would slip back into the same routine of mocking one another and she was glad for it. It meant minimal weirdness between them, if Sirius continued hitting on her and she carried on knocking him back.

Smiling gratefully as he held the door for her, she waited until he was back by her side before turning to look at him. "I highly doubt that one kiss from me is the highlight of your day," she said, one eyebrow arching as she peered at him disbelievingly.

"In that case I consider the challenge officially open," Sirius said with a nod. "You may be pleasantly surprised at how this ends up."

"Well, it was a very nice kiss," he told her as he led her down the stairs. "But you know what to expect from our parties so maybe there'll be more."

"Just as surprised as I've been for the last six years?" Charlie snapped back, a smirk on her face as they made down the stairs. Nothing had changed at all; something that pleased her greatly.

Holding her free hand up, she shook her head. "Nobody said anything about a party," she said, giving him a sharp look, "Don't be presumptuous, and don't assume that you're getting anything else from me today."

"Seventh year is the charm," Sirius said cheerfully, grinning as they fell back into their usual bickering.

He couldn't help pouting at this news.

"Well is it time for us to appear for this not-a-party?" he asked. "Or do I get some more time to admire your legs in private?"

Unable to keep the grin from her face, Charlie shrugged. "You keep telling yourself that and it might actually come true," she teased, knowing that he'd take it as a joke, "Keep pouting and your face will stick that way."

At the mention of her legs, Charlie looked down and muttered to herself. "I should probably let it down to its normal length," she observed, "But if the birthday boy thinks that looking at my legs is a fun activity, I suppose I can let it slide for today." On any other day, she would have jabbed him in the ribs and told him to shut up but she was in a good mood and was feeling generous. "We can take a longer walk if you'd like," she said, "That might not be a bad idea actually." After all, it would give the others more time still to set things up.

"Oh, I'll wear you down eventually," Sirius said with a smirk. "And no covering up, it's my birthday and the birthday boy demands it. Besides, you look good."

Sirius slid his hand down to fold around her own, swinging their arms back and forth as they waked.

"Sounds good to me. You know I'm hardly going to refuse more time alone with you."

Charlotte was moderately surprised when Sirius held onto her hand. Not that it was unpleasant, but she hadn't expected him to be the sentimental sort. "You can try as long as you like," she muttered, rolling her eyes once more, "But thank you."

Honestly, why was he being so charming? Charlie could tell that he was laying it on extra thick today and she was rather unsure as to why. "Did you hit your head somewhere?" she asked, giving him a sceptical look as their arms continued swinging.

"And you know I will," Sirius said with a nod, swinging their arms in a full circle, grinning at her. He raised an eyebrow at her question though, frowning as he touched the back of his head.

"Not that I remember. Is it really so strange that I care about my friends?"

Chuckling softly as their arms moved, Charlotte shrugged. She was sure that Sirius would continue trying to get under her skirt for many years to come and really, she was pleased. It was just another thing that continuously happened between them and so a change would only upset the balance they had with one another. "Persistence usually pays off," she said with a devious smile, "But don't get your hopes up."

Shaking her head slightly at his question, Charlotte let her gaze drop to the floor. "No, but for us two to spend time alone together without one or both of us ending up hexed is a strange concept," she replied, "Then again, the night is young and you haven't been overly obnoxious yet."

"We'll see, we'll see," Sirius said, in what he hoped was a mysterious voice, although he somewhat ruined it by shooting her a grin. To be honest, he wasn't sure what he'd do if she did suddenly change her mind. He adored her, sure, she was a friend, but he generally tried to keep friends and sex apart. That way lay trouble he was sure. At least, right now it did.

"Oh, well glad to see you have confidence in me," he said with a weary nod. "But it helps that you felt sorry for me and I had cake. So, there is a party then? Tell me there's a party or I may cry."

Rolling her eyes once again, Charlie shook her head. "I already said that I'm not telling you," she said, squeezing his hand lightly, "I'm not doing it to be a cow either. But it's meant to be a surprise and I've already ruined part of it by letting you know that I was intentionally ignoring your birthday."
