Who: Regulus Black & Holly Frye
What: The passing of a prophecy Consolation from a friend
When: Afternoon, October 23rd
Where: Seating area near the Pitch
Rating: SFW
Status: Incomplete

To put it plainly, Regulus was disappointed. The match had gone fairly well and things had seemed to be swinging in the Snake’s favour. Then it came down to him and he’d failed to catch the Snitch, meaning that Slytherin had lost (to Hufflepuff, no less). Ever the perfectionist, the younger Black had made his way to the locker room with his teammates in order to brood over the result whilst picking meticulously through his game play in the hopes of seeing where he’d gone wrong. A normal person would put it down to luck and chance, but not him. Regulus had never been one to shy away from his responsibilities and he was more than aware that it had been through his own fault that his team had been defeated.

It was long after the rest of the team had left that Regulus finally came to his senses. He’d been sitting on a bench, his Quidditch robes still on as he’d remained silent and lost in thought. Looking around, he frowned deeply before sighing and standing, pulling his bag from his locker and not stopping for long enough to change out of his uniform. Instead he grabbed his broom and headed for the door, his head bowed as he walked with the intention of holing himself up in his dormitory until he felt sufficiently satisfied that he’d worked out where he’d gone wrong.

It was on his way back to the school that he spotted somebody familiar. In his mind, there was no mistaking her, even though he could only currently see the back of her head. For a moment, he was torn on what to do. Usually he would have ignored everybody and continued on his way, but he had a friend now. From what he knew, friends didn’t simply walk by without speaking to one another. That would be rude and Regulus was far from being that. So after a moment of hesitation, he turned and strode over to the bench. Upon reaching it, he looked down at the Hufflepuff and slowly extended a hand to rest upon her shoulder.

“Holly?” he said quietly, setting his broom and bag beside himself before turning his full attention to the girl beside him.

Holly had, of course, been at the match. She was far from the biggest supporter of Quidditch at Hogwarts, but at the same time, she did have House pride. Loyal as any other Hufflepuff, she had attended every Hufflepuff Quidditch Match from her first at Hogwarts, decked out in black and yellow and cheering from the stands.
Today was just a bit different, however, because for the first time, she had seriously considered sitting in the Slytherin stands instead. After all, Hufflepuff was her House, that was true, but she didn’t really have any friends there, and certainly none among the popular members of the Quidditch team. On the Slytherin team, though, there was Regulus, Holly’s first and only friend, and part of her wanted to support him instead of her own House.

In the end, she took her usual seat in the Hufflepuff stands instead of braving the Slytherin ones, but she had to stop herself cheering a few times when Regulus went into a dive or had a near miss with a bludger, and at the end of the match, when Hufflepuff won, she didn’t feel nearly as elated as those around her. She screamed with the others, of course, but she couldn’t help but notice the downtrodden look on Regulus’ face.

All in all, she was in no mood for a victory party. In fact, Holly thought she had probably better avoid the Hufflepuff common room altogether for a while: if she shut down their victory party, she’d be ostracised for weeks (even more than she usually was), and she certainly didn’t feel like joining in. Instead, she pulled a small book out of the inside pocket of her robes. She always kept books on her for just such occasions as these, and with the weather being positively balmy for October, Holly felt that this was a good time to find a suitable place and read for a couple of hours. Perhaps by the time she finished the novel, the victory party would be winding down and she could return to her dormitory without incident.

Not long after she began reading, however, Holly’s plans were interrupted. She was one of those readers who became immersed entirely in the world on the page, and so she did not hear footsteps, which might have warned her of Regulus’ approach. Instead, she did not become aware of his presence until he said her name and put his hand on her shoulder.

Predictably, she was quite surprised. Holly jumped nearly a foot in the air, and made a rather loud exclamation of surprise. “Regulus!” she said after a moment, once she realised just who had startled her. “Sit down,” Holly added, indicating the bench next to her. Her heart rate, which had soared at Regulus’ arrival, was slowly returning to normal. “You played well today,” she added, ignoring the fact that Slytherin had lost.

It had never been Regulus’ intention to startle Holly. An apologetic expression was already on his face as he sat down upon request, removing his hand from her shoulder in order to fold both in his lap. “I am sorry,” he said quietly, “I did not mean to frighten you. I should know by now not to disturb you when you are immersed in a book.”

Regulus took a few moments to himself after Holly’s comment regarding the match. He was unaware of whether she was saying such a thing simply to be nice or because it was what friends did, for he knew that he had not played well at all. If he had, it would have been the Slytherins who were cheering and making a pleasant ruckus on the way to their common room. As such, they were commiserating instead and, in his opinion, it had been primarily his fault. “Thank you,” he replied quietly, his tone morose. He was disappointed in himself and it was plain to see, even if he was slightly grateful for her supportive words.

Holly waved off Regulus' apology at once. "Don't apologise; I'm happy to be disturbed," she said, pulling a bookmark out of her pocket and marking her place before closing her book. Holly placed her book in her lap and folded her hands over it, just as Regulus had done. "I'm trying to kill time because I'm avoiding the party that I'm sure is going on in the common room," she explained in an undertone.

Almost at once, Holly felt bad for mentioning the party. Even though he thanked her for her compliment, it was clear that Regulus was feeling down about Slytherin's loss today. True, Holly had never had much interest in sport, but she felt bad for her friend all the same, and decided to try and cheer him up. "I mean it," she pressed, giving him a small smile and an encouraging look. "Quidditch matches are often decided by a couple of seconds and no small amount of luck. You've got nothing to feel bad over," said Holly firmly.

Regulus wished that he could have adopted the same mentality as Holly. He knew that she was partly correct in her assessment that luck was involved. But he ought to have worked harder in his pursuit of the Snitch, or at least attempted to fly after it in a more timely fashion. He had been so close, yet that hadn't been enough. The mention of the party was primarily lost on him, since he was already aware of how much the Hufflepuffs were celebrating.

"Why are you not celebrating with your housemates?" he asked curiously, opting not to discuss the tactics of Quidditch. He didn't much feel like going over it again in his mind, let alone attempt to persuade Holly that he had been at fault.

It did not escape Holly's notice that Regulus hadn't actually responded to her reassurance, but she decided not to comment on it. If he wanted to wallow in his misery for a short while, she supposed that was his right.

When he asked why Holly was not at the victory party, she shrugged and pushed a piece of hair behind her ear. "I didn't much feel like celebrating," she said, and then she paused for a moment, debating about whether or not she should continue. After a second, Holly decided to clarify her statement a bit. "Quite frankly, I'm not really friends with anyone in my House, but I am friends with you, and you lost, so." Though others might have felt awkward admitting such a thing, to Holly it was simply the truth.

As Holly moved her hair behind her ear, Regulus noticed something wrong with her hand. Whilst he heard what she'd said and appreciated her kindness and loyalty, he was far too distracted by the inflamed injury on her skin to reply. Before asking permission, he'd extended a hand and carefully taken Holly's in his own, bringing it closer to his face in order to inspect it.

"What is it?" he asked, his eyes skimming over the wound, "If I did not know better, I would have said you had been bitten by a snake." Surely that was impossible though? He hadn't yet heard of anything involving serpents, least of all them attacking students.

Holly was more than a little surprised when Regulus took her hand. It set off a strange, fluttery feeling in her stomach that she could not recall ever experiencing before. For the moment, at least, she chose to ignore it and instead address Regulus' question.

"You didn't--" Holly began, but then paused, a look of comprehension dawning on her face. "Well, no, I suppose you must've been focused on the game. I was bitten by a snake, actually, during the match. Someone, presumably a Slytherin, set loose several of them into the Hufflepuff stands. I recognized the breed from Care of Magical Creatures; they aren't venomous, but it was still a violent and senseless prank. Several students who were frightened of snakes were absolutely terrified."

Blinking incomprehensibly, Regulus took a moment to process the news. Despite being a Slytherin himself, he greatly disapproved of such a prank. Snakes could be extremely dangerous, venomous or not. For somebody to have let several of them loose was extremely alarming. The news that several other students had been frightened in the process did nothing to alter his opinion that whoever had done this was extremely idiotic.

"I apologise for the nonsensicality of my fellow housemates," he said quietly, his eyes flickering from the wound to Holly's face. Despite having inspected her hand, Regulus did not let it go. Instead he rested both her and his own hands on his thigh as he gave the Hufflepuff a sympathetic smile. "Have you seen Madam Pomfrey yet? You ought to at least put some Essence of Dittany on it, so that it does not scar."

"You have nothing to apologise for, Regulus," said Holly, just as firmly as when she had been telling him that the loss was not his fault. "I know you had nothing to do with this." Holly was certain of it, too: no matter what Dom suggested, she felt she knew Regulus well enough to know that his intentions did not involve hurting others, especially not in a way such as this.

After a pause, Holly continued to speak. "I haven't seen Madame Pomfrey yet. I intended to merely clean it and wrap it up when I returned to my dormitory; it isn't an especially serious wound, after all." No matter what she said, Holly was pleased by the concern Regulus was showing her, and also by the way that he had not yet let go of her hand.

"Even so," Regulus began with a small shake of his head, "I wish for you to know that the team would not endorse such a display. At least, I am sure the majority would not." Obviously he couldn't speak for everyone but really, the act had been childish and insensitive. Slytherins tended to have more class than that.

With concern still in his eyes, Regulus frowned slightly. "Will you allow me to help you?" he asked tentatively, his gaze flickering down to the wound again. It mostly looked inflamed but he was sure that it would be at least a little troublesome to attempt to clean it alone.

Though it was entirely unnecessary, Holly appreciated Regulus' reassurance that neither himself nor the rest of the Slytherin team were in support of the release of the snakes. It was likely to have been an immature prankster, then, and those existed in every house. That meant, too, that it was likely just a stupid school rivalry, rather than a hate crime. There had been rather too many of those thus far this year.

When Regulus offered to help her clean and bandage her wound, Holly was at least a little touched. There was a small part of her that also said it meant more time with Regulus holding her hand, but as Holly wasn't sure exactly where that voice was coming from, she ignored it, and instead gave Regulus a small smile, looking up at him through her eyelashes. "You certainly don't have to, but if you want to help me, of course I will allow it," said Holly quietly.

With a small nod at gaining her permission, Regulus stood slowly. He didn't let go of Holly's hand, instead holding it gently as he leaned down in order to sling his bag onto his shoulder and pick up his broom with the other. Once he was sure he was ready, he looked down at the Hufflepuff with reassuring smile. "Shall we?" he asked, nodding towards the castle as an indication that they ought to start moving.

Holly wasn't entirely certain why Regulus was still holding her hand, but she certainly wasn't going to complain. It felt nice, holding someone else's hand, and it wasn't something Holly had really done since she was a small child. She privately resolved to try and do it more often. That same little voice pointed out that this would be different were the other person anyone but Regulus, but Holly continued to ignore that part of her mind.

As Regulus stood, so did Holly. She returned his smile and added a nod, and then began to walk with him back towards the castle. "You know, that dive you did about two hours into the match was extremely impressive," Holly said after they walked in silence for a moment. She had been gripping her own hands so hard when Regulus sunk into that dive that she had nearly drawn blood; in her mind, impressive was an understatement.

As the pair of them made towards the castle, Regulus bowed his head at the complement. He could already feel his cheeks tint with colour at being called impressive, a small part of him ecstatic that Holly had noticed. "Thank you," he replied quietly, looking sidewards at her coyly, "I must admit that I was not sure whether I would collide with the ground, although I am extremely pleased that I did not." The last thing he really wanted was to end up in the infirmary.

Regulus' flush and little sideways glance brought Holly back to their afternoon in Elephantine last Hogsmeade weekend, when it first truly dawned on her that Regulus was really very attractive. As adamantly as she insisted to herself that Regulus was her friend and nothing more, when he looked at her like that, she could not help but imagine otherwise. She was only a teenage girl, after all.

At least Holly managed to keep her thoughts from affecting her enough to be a major distraction in their conversation. "Though I was certainly on the edge of my seat, I knew you wouldn't crash. You are far too skilled of a flier to make a miscalculation like that," stated Holly matter-of-factly.

Regulus had no inkling whatsoever that Holly was thinking about him in such a way. It had yet to dawn on him that anybody could ever truly feel that way about him, and so the thought that the girl beside him might be developing feelings other than friendship for him went completely over his head.

As the complements kept on coming however, the grin on his face grew. "You always have such kind words to say," he replied whilst flashing her a smile, "Thank you again. You are an extremely good friend."

Holly ducked her head, slightly sheepish, when Regulus thanked her for the compliments. Even as she did so, the smile on her face merely grew. "You make it easy, because you are deserving of every compliment I give you, Regulus. I would never insult your intelligence by flattering you."

Much to Holly's delight, Regulus seemed to be in a much better mood now than when he had first approached her today. Even aside from the additional feelings about which she was still confused, Holly was very pleased that she seemed to have been able to play some part in cheering him up. Hufflepuffs were supposed to be the best sorts of friends to have, or at least that was popular opinion, but Holly had never had a chance to test her skills in that area before.

Truthfully, nobody had ever said something so genuine and so nice to him before. Of course he was used to backhanded complements regarding his lineage and other such things, but they seemed of little import in comparison to the sorts of things Holly said to him. He could tell that, despite any earlier reservations he'd had regarding the validity of her words, she was being completely sincere. That meant more to him that anything.

"Please know that I extend the same courtesy to you," he said as the pair of them reached the castle entrance, "You are far too good to me, Holly."

"If anything, it is you who is too good to me, Regulus," Holly said, with a slight laugh. "After all, you are the one who is insisting on helping me clean and tend to a simple snakebite wound. I highly doubt my own brother would show such concern for my well-being," she pointed out with a smirk.

Honestly, Holly was pleased to be the one being fussed over for a change, since she was so often the one doing the fussing. She felt valued, cared for, and it also meant she got to hold Regulus' hand for what appeared to be the forseeable future. There appeared to be absolutely no downsides to this situation.

"I believe then that we are perfectly good to one another," Regulus replied somewhat cheerfully, hoping that the middle ground could be reached with his statement so that the pair of them wouldn't spend the remainder of their time together discussing who was the better person. Clearly they complemented one another ideally. "As for the bite," he went on to say, "I simply wish to make sure that you are alright. The only way my mind will be put fully at ease is if I tend to it myself."

Holly smiled when Regulus explained why he wanted to tend to her bite. "I certainly wouldn't want you to fret unnecessarily," she replied, just a hint of teasing colouring her tone. "After all, if I were wrong about the snakes in question and my hand fell off tomorrow, you would feel extremely guilty, as would I for not letting you tend to it," Holly continued, the expression on her face now a full-blown smirk.

Noting the expression on Holly's face, Regulus rolled his eyes in a dramatic fashion before smiling. "If the snakes were venomous, you would be showing signs of being poisoned by now," he stated matter-of-factly, "But even so, I still insist that you allow me to assist you."

Regulus' eye-roll made Holly laugh, though the know-it-all part of her could not help but continue their banter. "Well, I suppose it could have been a serpent with a slow-acting venom, like a boomslang; then I would not feel anything for several hours--but I highly doubt any juvenile prankster would have the money or the ability to procure snakes from so far away," she pointed out. "Regardless of its lack of potential lethality, I would be honoured to have you tend to my wound, Regulus," Holly finished, still smirking slightly.

Regulus held his tongue when Holly stated that nobody would have the money to import such a dangerous breed of snake. Indeed, he knew several people who had the means to do so. He also withheld the knowledge that some people's families might already own such animals. She didn't need to hear that.

"I am pleased to hear it," he said as they entered the castle, "Where should this take place? Do you already have supplies or will a trip to the infirmary be necessary after all?"

Regulus' question was a valid one, and Holly stopped walking for a moment to consider it, because the answer would determine where they were headed. "I do have supplies," Holly began, somewhat thoughtfully, "but I would rather avoid the Hufflepuff common room for as long as possible, so perhaps a trip to the infirmary would be best." Holly did not want to try and find her way to her dorm through the party she knew was happening, much less with a member of the team they had just defeated in tow. Decision made, she started walking again, heading for the stairs.

Regulus was rather pleased that Holly didn't suggest that they head towards the Hufflepuff common room. Whilst he wasn't a sore loser the majority of the time, he was still feeling a little put-out by the results and didn't want to crash the victory party that he was sure would be happening at that moment. So instead he smiled slightly, coming to rest his broom on his free shoulder as the pair of them headed to the Hospital Wing hand in hand.
