Who: Christina Smith and OPEN
What: Generic intro post Hanging around the library
When: September 23, after dinner
Where: ...The library.
Rating: SFW
Status: Incomplete

There were three books open on the table in front of her; one of Muggle history (a present from her sister the year before), and two covering the same period from a magical perspective. Christie leant over them, tapping her quill against her chin. After a moment, absent-mindedly, she dug into her bag, pulling out a pencil to underline something in the Muggle book, then scribbled on the parchment next to her.

Her elbow caught the ink pot, and she looked up just as it went over, splattering ink over all three books (and a couple on the nearby shelves) and flying off the edge of the desk to shatter on the ground. Christie leapt to her feet, hand over her mouth. "Oh, no!"

Laura was just picking a book from the nearby shelf when the ink bottle hit the floor. She turned around, looking for the culprit, wondering if this was some stupid prank. She noticed that expression on the girl´s face, however, her hand over her mouth, and her face softened.

"It´s just ink," she said and moved towards Christina. They were in the same house and so she knew the name that belonged to the face. "I´m not too good with cleaning spells so I won´t touch the books just in case, but I can put the bottle back together for you. And maybe vanish the ink from the floor if you don´t mind it coming to waste? Together we´ll have it cleaned up before anyone notices..."

"Thanks." Christina flushed, pushing her glasses back up her nose, and reached into her bag, searching for her wand. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause a fuss. Oh, no, and this'll be ruined." She reached out to touch the pages of the Muggle book, sodden with ink, then sighed. "One thing at a time..." she mumbled to herself, and cleared her throat.

"You´re welcome," Laura answered, pulling out her own wand and kneeling down. She avoided the ink as best as she could, not keen on the idea of having it soak her robes, and reached for the shreds of the bottle with the tip of her wand. "It happens to the best of us," she shrugged. "And I´m sure there have to be some spells to save your book."

"I hope so," Christie agreed, chewing on her lip, and moved to Vanish the ink that had splattered on the table. "There must be something... I'll ask Madame Veda." For the time being, she settled for carefully siphoning off the wet ink still lying on the pages.

Laura nodded. "That´s a good idea," she agreed as the bottle put itself back together before her eyes. After it was whole again, she vanished the ink from the floor and the bottle. It went a little better than she had feared, there was only a faint stain left behind. This was exactly why she always washed her cauldron the muggle way after the use...

"Here, as good as new," she claimed and put the bottle on the clean part of the table. "What were you working on, anyway?"

"Thank you," Christina said again, chewing on her lip. "Um. I've been working on it since last Christmas... I'm trying to correlate the history in this book" - she pointed at the blackened Muggle history book - "with the version Binns teaches, the version in these ones. Helps to get context." She shrugged, looking uncomfortable. "Um. It's just a project, really."

"You´re welcome," Laura repeated. "No need to thank me." What Christina talked about sounded quite interesting, actually. "History of Magic isn´t really strongest subject, but I´m always saying it´s only beneficial to do more than what´s necessarily required to pass classes. Your project sounds interesting. Are there many differences? That is a Muggle book, isn´t it? I haven´t seen a Muggle history book properly since before Hogwarts..."

"There are a lot of differences," Christina agreed, nodding as she shifted to Vanish the rest of the ink. "Um... the governments split completely with the Statute of Secrecy back in the sixteenth century, so of course the legislation and social mores are totally different. I'm onto the Enlightenment now, and the difference between the scientific advances in the Muggle world and the magical advances here..."

She blushed. "Sorry. There's a lot of differences, that's all I mean."

"It´s alright, feel free to continue," Laura said, looking around to see if there was any more ink to vanish. "One can never know too much. It´s nice to see someone get excited over knowledge."

"Well, um..." Christina shifted slightly, uncomfortable again. "I thought that was rather the drive for most Ravenclaws... but, um, as far as the history goes, it is really interesting to see how the Muggle perception of witchcraft and the wizarding perception of Muggles is similar, how it's different, what changes, what stays the same..."

"I just wish there weren´t exceptions that confirm the rule," Laura answered with a shrug, then nodded. "That would be interesting..." Noticing the other girls discomfort and realizing she had still homework to do, she leaned her head to side before suggesting: "Can I read it once you´re done? I´m really curious. Though now I should probably go do my own work... Unless you´d like my help with researching how to get that book back to normal..."

"Um..." Christina adjusted her glasses, and shook her head. "I think I can manage. But thank you. And... and I can lend you the book and my notes when I'm done, if you're really interested. Although my notes are pretty incomprehensible..."

Laura smiled. "That would be nice of you. Well, if you think you can handle it from here, I´d my homework. And there´s really no need to thank me."
