"It sounds like you and your mom are close," John observed, listening to the way she talked about her mom.
He glanced up from where he was looking at the table, catching Rory's eye as she looked at him. "I don't really like art, and it's not the decoration," John told her, "but I've never seen a room like this. Like anything in this house. It's big..." he explained, trailing off as he looked around the room. "...rich," he added softly, under his breath.
It wasn't that his family was poor, he'd never been in want for anything, and he did go to a private school, albeit on a full-ride scholarship, but still. He'd just never seen such an extravagant house.
He was used to small, dark rooms with minimal furniture and almost no personal belongings other than clothes. It just wasn't practical to keep knick-knacks and things when you were constantly moving. In fact, this was the first time John hadn't shared a bed with his brother in as long as he could remember. Now they were just sharing a room.
"Are you used to places like this?" John wondered, looking over at her again. It was obvious that she wasn't as stunned by the display of wealth as he was, but he just chalked it up to the fact that she went to Chilton.
