Shawn couldn't understand why the other kid was being so sullen about this. Had he not just said the coast was clear? Were they not about to enter a secret hidden pool table room, like a pair of international spies breaching the hidden lair of the evil bad guys? Gus would have understood.
Turning the door handle, Shawn shot back over his shoulder. "We're in California, it's always sunny. Is it Opposite Day and nobody told me? 'Cause if it is, then this? Is totally and completely not awesome." As he spoke, he pushed the door open, revealing the empty billiards room. It was surprisingly well-kept - there wasn't so much as a squeak from the door hinges - and as Jonathan had observed before, afternoon sunlight streamed into the room through wide windows. If either one of the boys were to look through them, they would see an outdoors very different from the respective neighbourhoods they had left behind.
But Shawn, of course, being Shawn, instead charged straight for one of the invitingly squashy armchairs lining the walls, landing with an impressive force that nearly caused the chair to topple backwards. Man, he couldn't wait to show all this to Gus.
