Oliver hadn't said much of anything to anyone since his mother passed. Katie had come by, but mostly he sat there. Even though he had known it was coming Oliver felt the loss of his mother so keenly that it hurt to breath. Every moment following her passing had been more painful than the last. Maybe in the future he'd be able to appreciate the time he had with her, but right now it felt like torture. Months of watching her fade away from the woman she once was into a ghost.
The funeral had been hard. Oliver had sat in a pew, feeling out of place. His mother had insisted it be held in a church even though Oliver hadn't set foot in one since he was a boy. His tie was too tight and his suit was uncomfortable. He sat between the only two people he'd speak to, Penny and Katie. Oliver's hand was squeezing Penny's so tightly that he worried he was going to break it. As the minister spoke or eternal peace and how his mother was in a better place, it all hit Oliver. His mother was gone. He'd never speak to her again.
For the first time in his life, Oliver openly wept. He leaned forward, covering his face with one hand and cried. Vaguely aware of the people next to him, Oliver wept for his mother and the pain she endured. He barely recalled standing as her coffin was lead out of the church. He was certain he stumbled after it. And it wasn't until Oliver made it outside the church that he noticed someone else was crying over his mother.
In an instant, Oliver stopped crying. His pain turned to white hot rage and Oliver tore away from his friends. "You bastard! What in the fuck are you doing here!?" Oliver grabbed an older man by the shirt and threw him against the building of the church. Pulling his arm back, Oliver punched his father square in the jaw. "You left her. You left her alone for years, you sodding piece of shit. How dare you come here now!?" He punched him again, harder this time. Oliver's face was red with rage. "You fucking GOD DAMN WORTHLESS BASTARD. GET OUT. GET OUT OF HERE." He punched the man over and over again, until his knuckles were cut and bleeding. "She loved you and you LEFT HER ALONE. GET OUT."
